BuildingsEarn LEED EB:OM certification for a buildingLEED EB:OM is a certification program for the operation and maintenance of existing buildings. We'd like to certify the administration building as a way to build campus understanding of sustainable operations. Successful processes could then be spread to other buildings. Could be a good class project.
3
BuildingsDraft sustainable operations and maintenance guidelines for campus buildings
4
BuildingsDevelop indoor air quality policyThis policy would formalize our efforts to ensure high indoor air quality. To get credit in STARS, we need an indoor air quality management policy, plan, and/or practices that include regular auditing or monitoring and a mechanism for occuprants to register complaints.
5
Co-Curricular EducationCreate Alfred State sustainability guide/mapCreate a map (preferably online and hard copy) showing the sustainability features of Alfred State's campuses
6
Co-Curricular EducationCreate the Sustainability Pioneers PledgeSignatories of the pledge would commit to take various sustainability actions. The pledge could also provide basis for competition between dorms (and departments) for who gets most signatures.
7
Co-Curricular EducationCreate guide to sustainable living in AlfredThis guide could be given to incoming students and new employees. It might include information about sustainable living in the dorms and sustainable companies in the area.
8
Co-Curricular EducationPrepare criteria for green dorm room certification programThis program would give recognition to dorm rooms that meet sustainability criteria
9
Co-Curricular EducationCreate a database of building sustainability featuresThis could be used to better showcase Alfred State's sustainability efforts
10
Co-Curricular EducationBuild green projects photo albumA library of sustainability photos to use on our website and for other PR purposes. We could also connect these photos to Alfred State's Flickr account
11
Co-Curricular EducationCreate Alfred State Sustainability Program logoProvide a common brand identify for Alfred State sustainability efforts; “Pioneering Sustainability”
12
Co-Curricular EducationCreate a video showing each step of how we recycle paper/cardboard with the shredder
13
CurriculumDevelop sustainability career guide, focusing on Alfred State programs
14
DiningUse Green Restaurant Association tool to evaluate dining hall sustainability
15
DiningInvestigate organic options for salad bar
16
EnergyPerform biogas feasibility studyResearch the feasibility of using manure from the farm and food waste to generate biogas for energy. In particular, could we secure their sufficient volume of material for a biogas system to be practical? Could be a good class project. See http://news.ucdavis.edu/search/news_detail.lasso?id=10202
17
EnergyPerform solar feasibility studyEvaluate best locations on campus buildings/land for solar panels and evaluate various financing options to make recommendations for how the campus should proceed with efforts to transition to solar power.
18
EnergyEvaluate combined heating and power systems for implementation across campusWe are in the midst of moving to decentrailized heating infrastructure. Right now we are focused on boilers, but combined heat and power fuel cells might offer some advtanges
19
EnergyConduct showerhead inventoryGo through the residence halls and count showerheads; collect information on the flow rate of each model
20
EnergyInvestigate options for real time monitoring of energy consumptionCurrently, energy consumption data from building submeters is recorded once a month, which limits our ability to use the data.
21
FoodUse Real Food Challenge calculator to assess food sustainabilityGain a deeper understanding of where our food comes from and how it is grown; provide a baseline from which to improve
22
GroundsCreate map of hiking opportunities on and around campusMake it easier for students to experience the area's natural beauty
23
GroundsCreate a database of significant trees on campusThis would be a mechanism for tracking age and species of our trees and aid in planning future tree planting
24
GroundsResearch environmentally preferable ways to deal with snow and ice
25
Human ResourcesPrepare criteria for green office certification programThis program would give recognition to offices that meet sustainability criteria
26
PurchasingDevelop sustainable purchasing policy/programCreate a process to ensure compliance with state green purchasing requirements and enable Alfred State to exceed minimum requirements as new products/services evolve. (e.g. a committee could take one purchasing category each year, research options, and set minimum requirements for campus purchases of those products).
27
TransportationCreate a map showing where faculty and staff liveThis could be used to help estimate GHG emissions from commuting and facilitate carpool matching
28
TransportationDevelop a commuter surveyGather data about how people are commuting to track success of efforts to promote sustainable transportation and evaluate GHG emissions
29
TransportationEvaluate carpool matching programsRecommend one for the college to use, preferably in concert with Alfred University
30
WasteResearch best practices in residence hall recyclingMake recommendations for improving recycling in Alfred State's residence halls
31
WasteConduct a waste composition auditAssess the portion of materials to be sent to the landfill that could have been recycled as well as the level of contamination in recycling containers; if we do a random sample every year, we could get a sense of whether we are improving on these dimensions.
32
WasteRecommend options for composting food wasteA large share of of the waste from Alfred State that goes to the landfill is potentially compostable and Alfred State has plenty of space for composting. Given that waste disposal costs are likely to increase as the Allegany landfill closes in 3-5 years, composting could be an economical and environmentally friendly option. We need an analysis of the different approaches for composting that includes estimates of the costs associated with establishing and maintaining each.
33
WasteResearch best practices in move in day waste reduction
34
WasteInventory recycling and trash receptacles on campusThere is a wide variety of recycling receptacles in different places around campus and it's often not clear who is responsible for which and what is supposed to go into each. Some parts of campus appear to be served much better than others as well. As part of moving to a more consistent and standardized system, we need to get a better handle on what is out there.
35
WaterDraft policies and procedures for stormwater management
36
WaterConduct a water auditIdentify major sources of water consumption on campus and make recommendations for reducing water use.
37
WaterWater consumption benchmarkingUse submetering data to compare buildings by water consumption.
