To Download the Calculator: You cannot edit it as is, but you can download it as an Excel Sheet, or create a copy as a Google Sheet and then begin editing. In the upper right corner, select "File" and then "Create Copy" to have your own Goolgle Sheet for editing, or go to "File," "Download," and "Microsoft Excell" to download as an Excel document. Please feel free to reachout with any feedback, or if you simply enjoyed the use of this calculator. Unfortunately I have know way to track downloading metrics, and I love to know when folks find my calculator to be useful.

Nutrition Calculator: To formulate your own feed recipe, first choose your target protein/fat based on the age/type of poultry. For example, the target protein for a laying hen is between 16-17% and the recommended fat is 4%. Next, enter the amount of each ingredient, in pounds, that you desire to add under "Pounds in Recipe". This spreadsheet has left room for you to add your own ingredients, but whatever you enter in the "Pounds in Recipe" in the Recipe Calculator worksheet, will be transferred over to the Price Calculator. This means whatever ingredients you add or remove from the Recipe Calculator must be similarly adjusted in the Price Calculator. Once you have plugged in the desired recipe, reached your desired recipe weight, ensure that you have reached your target protein and fat by looking at the totals at the bottom of the worksheet. Make adjustments accordingly. The numbers included in this spreadsheet have been cross checked for accuracy, but even when cross checking variations of 1-2% among reports are common. Many hobby farm hens free range and eat grass and insects anyways, so target protein will always be varied in these hens regardless of your feed. Bear in mind, feeds bought premade have been scientfically formulated for the exact needs of your flock. Please do your research before creating and feeding your own feed to your poultry, and always double check the crude protein and fat listed on this spreadsheet before use.Always monitor the health of your flock. Incorporate changes to their diet over a 3-4 week period. *Note: The columns "Protein % of Recipe," "Protein in Pounds," "Fat % of Recipe," and "Fat in Pounds," are meaningful largely for the purpose of calculating the final totals for protein and fat per recipe. You can ignore these columns. Also, there are two copies of Corn, Oats, and Sunflower seeds which I included when making this tool for my own purposes. I was comparing costs using organic, Non-GMO, human-grade ingredients, and affordable ingredients sourced from Tractor Supply.

Price Calculator: This is a very simple calculator. First, the calculator will auto-populate based on any inputs made from the Nutrition Calculator. You can still use the calculator independently, but the Recipe Calculator will not auto-populate based off of the Price Calculator, and all values for "Pounds in Recipe" must be erased afterwards for the Recipe Calculator to work. For any grain, legume, seed, etc., that you wish to buy, simply input the item name, package weight in pounds, and the desired weight (in pounds) to be included included in your recipe. Once you enter the product weight and price, the price per pound will automatically be calculated. I have linked to the items in which the current price and weights were based upon, and at the time of creation, these were the best prices I could find. Once you have plugged in all of your numbers, the final weight and price will appear at the bottom. I have included some of the most common and best priced grains, with links, in the spreadsheet. Feel free to change to suit your needs. If you add any ingredients, it is critical that the rows match up between the Recipe Calculator and the Price Calculator for the auto-population to be accurate.
