3/15/2022 15:51:14Alex DavisArizona State UniversityProgram Manager, Data and ReportingNo comment"ongoing relationship" - if an institution has reviewed another institution's STARS report once in the past three years - would that be excluded from this credit via the "ongoing" language? What if an institution reviews a new report every year?

Similarly, the AASHE facilitated mentoring program could be something that a university invests staff time in, but mentees can move on from high ed and end the "ongoing" relationship.
This is a big improvement - the continuing ed space doesn't lend itself to being measured the same way that academic courses are. Please clarify if this is inclusive of distance learning students. Please clarify if advocacy for funding to support sustainability-focused research is included or excluded in this credit. Community Garden: suggestion to expand definition to include a garden that invites community members to volunteer and that provides produce from the garden to community food pantries.

3/15/2022 17:57:34Michael LizotteUNC CharlotteUniversity Sustainability OfficerThis needs a timeframe? There is a lot of turnover, innovation, and on-off experiments (e.g. grant-funded, sponsored) in continuing ed offerings. Will it count if it was offered in the past year, or three? "Current status" may be too vague. Does a future program that is being advertised/listed count, or will that be considered "planned"?Community Garden: do we need to define "local community member"? Would my Staff Community Garden count, or does it need to be open to people unaffiliated with the university?

4/14/2022 7:49:45Davina MannDeakin UniversityResearch FellowFurther indicators that assess sustainable food environments should be added to the tool. The recently validated and published Uni-Food tool provides indicators that may be suitable to this area. In particular, the indicators relevant for STARS Include: Does the university have a detailed plan or strategy to promote healthy, equitable and environmentally sustainable campus food environments?
Does the university have a policy that food retail outlets and vendors provide environmental sustainability information for food and beverages at point of sale?
Does the university regularly measure the environmental sustainability of campus food environments?
Is there a community garden on campus?
Is there a strategy to reduce the volume of waste to landfill that acknowledges food waste?
Does the university support redistribution/donation of foods through policy and/or coordination?

4/14/2022 22:01:57Susan EdeyConcordia UniversityProgram ManagerOur has many partnerships that support sustainability, but they are not all managed centrally. The first two questions would be easy to answer, but I'm not sure about the third one. What is the difference between sometimes and always? We definitely encourage community involvement all the way from project design, through execution, to evaluation. We use best practices in our centralize offices, but I'm not sure that we could know with certainty what assessment practices are used for all partnerships initiated by students and faculty.

4/27/2022 16:33:15Elaine DurrElon UniversityDirector of SustainabilitySuggest adding more specifics/requirements for community partnerships. The definition is helpful; however it would be more useful to have specifics/requirements in the body of the credit.
Consider adding recognition - partial points or optional fields - for reporting sustainability-related community partnerships. These can have significant impact as well.
Criterion A & B: Consider adding participating in educational sessions (e.g., webinar, conference, workshop) as active participation.
Criterion B: Consider more options for active participation (e.g, meeting attendance). Some networks may not have formal boards/committees or conferences.
One of the bullets under Required Documentation seems to be from another credit - "sustainability-focused co-curricular education activities"

4/29/2022 4:16:26Catherine ElliottUniversity of TasmaniaSenior Sustainability OfficerThis criteria could include specific points for indigenous rights, recognition of first nations people, apology to first nations people for past injustice, a reconciliation action plan, support programs for indigenous students and staff, an audit of collections at the university and review of whether materials should be returned to first nations peoples and the percentage of grounds that are managed by indigenous people or actively use indigenous management practices. It would be good to include partial points for inter-campus collaborations that are multi-lingual, and include languages other than English. For example, Arabic speaking staff at a university in Australia presenting to Arabic universities or co-hosting a panel in Arabic. This would be encouraging multi-lingual discussions of ideas and concepts, not restricting sustainability to the English language. The criteria is good but would be good to also include points for programs that include inter-generational justice and opportunities for younger generations. For example, a climate change education program for high school students working with university mentors. It would be good to include partial points for assessing a responding to the challenges identified by the community, knowing what types of civic engagement communities want from universities and whether we are meeting their needs. The criteria could specifically include both academic and professional staff. Permanent academic staff already have a weighting in their PD for community service, this can include public presentations or panels. The indicator should specifically include opportunities for professional staff to be involved in community service as part of their work hours. It is also not possible for many casual or contract employees to participate in community service, time allocated for casual or contract staff to be involved in community service could receive partial points.I would recomend Exmplary Practice credits that are specific for: indigenous support programs, multi-lingual campus programs, biodiversity citizen science programs, climate change education, vulnerable people support, sustainability careers and leadership, staff health and wellbeing programs.

4/29/2022 21:46:54Katie Broad Concordia University LIVE Centre CoordinatorWe currently have the Co-curricular Record which is an official document which lists any volunteer work, unpaid leadership roles and student led initiatives that a student has participated in during their time at Concordia. This document is an official record of their involvement at the university and is used to demonstrate competencies and transferable skills that they have developed in their role. The Co-Curricular Record is managed by the Dean of Students Office. CCR Webpage: https://www.concordia.ca/students/ccr.html

Concordia students also have access to the services provided by the LIVE Centre which connects them with non-profit and community organizations on and off campus who are recruiting volunteers. However, only the on-campus volunteer activities are recorded in the Co-curricular record. We do not record volunteer hours that are worked off campus. Each year we recognize outstanding volunteers with the LIVE Centre Volunteer Recognition Award. https://www.concordia.ca/students/volunteering/award.html
We do not currently have an employee community service program in place. However, Concordia staff and faculty also have access to the services provided by the Concordia LIVE Centre to connect them with volunteer opportunities

It's good that the inventory is no longer a requirement, but it will still be a challenge to estimate participation without clear instructions. This credit doesn't seem to apply to the Canadian context. Of the 53 CDN institutions rated by STARS, only one (Nova Scotia Community College) has a program that supports employee volunteering. This credit doesn't apply to the Canadian context as it is currently worded. As most Canadian institutions are public and receive large amounts of government funding, political advocacy is generally not practiced. "Active participation in campaigns aiming to change corporate or public policy" does not occur at the institutional level. Academics advocate for causes on their own initiative, not as representatives of the institution. Institutions do occasionally issue statements on political issues (e.g., Black Lives Matter, war in Ukraine, etc.) but only inasmuch as institutional operations are affected (i.e.,, international students impacted by the war). I suggest revising the wording to be more inclusive of different types of advocacy. No commentsPerhaps for employee community service, institutions could be asked to provide amounts donated to charity as an alternative (or supplement) to volunteer programs. McGill, for example, runs a donation campaign to support United Way each year. Employees can also choose to deduct donations from their paycheques.
