It also allowed for more specialized robots (gear runners), that usually would not work at regionals (because all parts of the game are necessary and jack of all trade robots are necessary to become an alliance captain). We also liked the role of the airship pilot, because it provided a genuine role for human players and an extra element to match strategy and the unpredictability of match outcomes.
