Student Schedule: Low Choice

At Kairos, students practice time management with limited, but incrementally increasing, amounts of choice. Every student begins at low choice on the Ownership Continuum—a gradient of who "owns" a student's scheduling decisions, the student themself or their individualized coach. As students meet academic growth goals, showing they can handle the given level of choice productively, they gradually move toward greater autonomy along the Ownership Continuum. Over time, students themselves structure decisions around where, when, how, and with whom they work to achieve their goals. At full choice, students are successfully managing the same scheduling responsibility (and, by extension, demonstrating the same executive functioning skills) as a college student or modern professional. Their days become almost entirely differentiated, self-direted learning time, allowing for an education, and in turn a life, that they design for themselves.

Kairos runs on a block schedule, with alternating Be Determined and Be Curious Day (the same as "A and B Day" at other schools). To match the circadian rhythm of teenagers, Kairos runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with optional supervision and remedial tutoring available every day before school (7:30-9 a.m.) and after school (5-6 p.m.).
