Let's pretend that the Ancient One and Mordo are Christians, and Stephen Strange is an opportunity to disciple someone into the fold...an opportunity *literally* knocking on the door...

PLAY SFX #1.

The Ancient One is hesitant to invite Stephen into the fold because he is so stubborn, arrogant, and ambitious.
-- Hard to work with
-- Uncoachable
-- You can lead a horse to water...

But Mordo asks her to have compassion on him for two reasons:
1. Mordo knows that the Ancient can help Stephen because she helped Mordo.
2. There may come a time when the multiverse needs someone like Stephen.

After plenty of training and discipline and study and practice...the time has come for the Ancient One to leave.
Ephesians 4:17-24 NLT

17 With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. 18 Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. 19 They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.

20 But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. 21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

KEY TEXT: Ephesians 4:21-22 NLT
21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.
SFX #1: 32:05 - 32:45
You think I was wrong to cast him out? | Five hours later, and he's still on your doorstep. There's a strength to him. | Stubborness, arrogance, ambition, I've seen it all before. | He reminds you of _____. | I cannot lead another gifted student to power only to lose him to the Dark. | You didn't lose me. I wanted the power to defeat my enemies. You gave me the power to defeat my demons and to live with natural law. | We never lose our demons, _____, we only live above them.

SFX #2: 1:23:49 - 1:24:29
You wonder what I see in your future? | No...yes... | I never saw your future...only its possibilities. You have such a capacity for goodness, you always excelled. And not because you crave success, but because you fear failure. | It's what made me a great doctor. | It's precisely what kept you from greatness. Arrogance and fear still keep you from learning the simplest most significant lesson of all. | Which is? | It's not about you.

SFX #3: 1:24:30 -
When you came to me, you asked me how I was able to heal Jonathan Pangborn. I didn't. He channels dimension energy directly into his own body. | He uses magic to walk? | Constantly. He had a choice to return to his own life or to serve something greater than his own life. | So I could have my hands back again...my old life. | You could, and the world would be all the lesser for it.

Living Above Your Demons
or
It is expedient that Doctor Strange Should Die and That The Whole World Not Perish

And this is done when you’re “one of us.”

Doctor Stephen Strange is a broken man; spiritually and physically. He has an “I” problem. He is arrogant to the extreme. When he saves a patient who, Dr. Nick West prematurely pronounced dead, he shows his lack of grace and former love interest Dr. Christine Palmer calls him out:

SOUND BITE 1 - I can’t work in your butcher shop … Stephen, everything is about you.

But pride goeth before destruction (Prov. 16:18) and Stephens destruction comes that night on the way to a speaking engagement. (PINK FLOYD - Interstellar Overdrive)

This crash does not humble him; it only amplifies his arrogance. He tries to convince a French surgeon to perform experimental procedures; he refuses. In comes Christine, “He wouldn’t do it.”

SOUND BITE 2

He meets Pangborn - You came back from a place there’s no way back from. I’m trying to find my own way back. He is directed to Kamar-Taj, where the cost is high. And we’re not talking money.

We never lose our demons, Mordo. We only learn to live above them.

You will never win. No, but I can lose; again and again and again.

Doctor Stephen Strange is beginning to look like The Ancient One, apostle Paul, Jesus.
Philippians 3:4-11 NKJV

2 Corinthians 1:5 NASB
For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.

2 Corinthians 1:7 NLT
We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.

Colossians 1:24 NLT
I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for his body, the church.

PS Philip Comment on ARRIVAL: Grace and Listening | FCC 131Hey guys, I love this film- my favorite release from 2016. I've listened to many podcasts discussing it, some Christian and some not. You guys had a take on it that I hadn't heard, and it was pretty great. My hat is off to you.
One thing I get is the value of human life. It is fundamental to Christianity that since we are all created in the image of God, we all have intrinsic value and worth. Pain and suffering is inevitable for us all, but like Dr. Banks, we should not let that deter us from considering the positives and celebrating life and all it's ups and downs. Her daughter may not have had as many years as most people do, but that did not diminish the value of her existence- perhaps it even increased it.
Love the show guys! #muhweeladgimli
