Welcome to the Adventure

This version of a character sheet can seem pretty daunting, so please read through this Quick Start guide first. It will save you from a lot of frustration if you do and start you on the path of intuitively knowing how to game it (<- see what I did there :^) for the greatest amount of enjoyment.

Initial Setup
14
You MUST make a copy of this Google Sheet in order to use it. To do that, go to the Google Sheet menu and select:

File -> Make a copy

This will make a copy of the spreadsheet that you will have full access to update/edit.

This spreadsheet uses scripts to do its magic. Google is going to prompt you to give your copy of the DADS Character Sheet access to run those scripts the first time you use any scripted character sheet functionality. Let's kick that off now and walk you through the steps.

Once you have your personal copy of the DADS Character Sheet open, click on the "DADS Character Sheet" menu option (it is located at the top, in the Google Sheets menu after Help) and select "Toggle Safe Mode".

*All "Safe Mode" does is change the formatting of all the fields on the CHARACTER sheet to pink if they contain a formula. This is to help you easily identify which fields are intended to be altered by you (those that are NOT pink) and which should be left to the spreadsheet to calculate (all the pink fields).

We are only toggling "Safe Mode" on at this point because it will execute the DADS Character Sheet script so we can walk through the Google Scrips authorization process. You will only need to follow these steps the first time you setup a new copy of the character sheet:

1. Authorization Required - click on the <Continue> button
36
2. Choose an account to continue to CharacterSheet - select your account
37
3. This app isn't verified - click on the "Advanced" link on the lower left
38
4. Click on the "Go to CharacterSheet (unsafe)" link
39
5. CharacterSheet wants to access your Google Account - click on the <Allow> button in the bottom right
40
6. Select "...*Character Sheet*..." -> "Toggle Safe Mode" again. This time you shouldn't be prompted and the script
41
should execute as expected.
42
43
The above steps are uncomfortable as Google is warning you against using the unverified scripts on this spreadsheet. The best I can do to alleviate any fears is to point you at the code that is being executed by this spreadsheet. You can see all the code used in this spreadsheet by selecting:
Tools -> Script editor

As long as you are copying the DADS Character Sheet Template from the dadsfunhobby@gmail.com or theflannelengineer@gmail.com account, then I can guarantee the spreadsheet is not doing anything nefarious. If you are copying it from another account, then I won't know if it has been modified.

Google Spreadsheets Basics

These are just a few key items that will make working with this version of Google Sheets quicker and easier.

57
Notes
58
Some entries across the DADS spreadsheet have notes on them to help you understand how to fill in or use data in those entries. A little black triangle in the upper-right corner of the field indicates when a field has a note associated with it. Put your mouse pointer in that field, and the note will pop-up.

The field below is an example:

Multi Select & Toggle Checkboxes
67
You will be clicking a lot of checkboxes on the CHARACTER SELECTIONS sheet. Most of the checkboxes will be one after the other. You can quickly select and toggle multiple checkboxes at once by doing the following:
68
69
1. Click in the cell of the first checkbox.
70
2. Hold down the <Shift> button and click the cell of the last checkbox. Then let up the <Shift> button.
71
3. Press the <Spacebar> to toggle the selected checkboxes.
72
73
74
Do NOT Use Copy/Paste on the CHARACTER Sheet
75
The CHARACTER sheet has very specific formatting. There are going to be times when you may want to copy text into the ITEMS, ATTACKS, SPELLS and other sections of the character sheet. However, if you do a normal copy/paste of the text, it will also copy over the formatting. This will likely cause issues for you.
76
77
78
If you want to copy/paste into an individual field, then copy the text as you normally would (<CTRL><C> or right-click, copy, et.).
BEFORE you paste, double click into the cell, then paste. This will insure that only the value is copied into the field and not the formatting.

CHARACTER SELECTIONS Sheet
84
85
This sheet will drive most of the data that shows up on the CHARACTER sheet. Each column header has a Note to better explain the intent of the data in that column. This is the sheet where you set your:
- Base ability scores (This could be done via dice rolls, point buy or however your party decides to do it.)
- Background
- Race & Subrace
Example: If your character is a Wood Elf, then select all the entries for Elf and Elf-Wood.
- Class & Subclass
Example: If your character is a Shadow Sorcerer, then select all the entries for Sorcerer and Sorcerer-Shadow.
- Feats
Note: You should replace the question mark in the Level column with the Class level that you picked up the Feat.

Note: All entries (except Feats) have a level associated with them. Only select those entries that are applicable to either your Class or Character level.

Note 2: This is a great place to Homebrew aspects of your character. Tweak, add or remove entries. Go nuts! It's your character. :^)

Abilities & Level Data Refresh Button
100
Any time you make an update to your character that will modify any of its Ability score values or its Level, you need to click the Data Refresh button for that change to reflect on the CHARACTER sheet.

This includes changes due to magic items and other events on the CHARACTER sheet and NOT just on the CHARACTER SELECTIONS sheet.
