|Parent/Guardian||I would like to see a increase in amount of funding to add one more counselor at TNHS. 3 does not seem to be enough this year for the amount of students On has gone on maternity leave. My daughter is in her group. It is hard to get time in when we really need it. There are other parents that feel the same way.|
Also, I feel you need to increase the budget to add a few more tutors, specifically Math as our teachers continually leave students behind to keep there curriculum.
Maybe create a Algebra 1a-1b course? We had one when I went to HS. Half the class is going to summer school now? My daughter gets A's in all other classes, well ok a B+ in Biology. Con Academy only works if you get each concept in order to move on to next one. We pay a lot on money for a personal tutor and it is a day late and a dime short.
|Currently, the contract states a student:counselor ratio of 500:1. Due to Parcel Tax, the ratio was reduced to 400:1. At Terra Nova, the ratio is at 333:1. The District is exploring to reducing the ratio to 300:1. |
Terra Nova offers math tutoring after school, but we recognize that we need additional intervetion during the school day. We have hired a Teachers on Special Assignments in math to improve math instruction districtwide.
JUHSD adopted an integrated math series so we will not be able to create an Algebra 1a and 1b course. We are exploring how to address students who need additional support in Math Course 1, 2, and 3.
|Staff||Goal 2 action 2 --we need to provide library materials that support all of our students and provide all of our students with time to come get materials---which also ties to |
Goal1 action 4 and 5-we need to talk about developing a better collection of books for our students. I was able to take my site council lcap funds and get some books that were low level high interest this year for SPED and ELL--but I never had the chance to get them into the library.
I think at least at Westmoor--I don't know about Jeff--we need to get the ELL students into the library more frequently and show them the supports that the library can offer to them. I had ELL students come in for the first time in March this year who didn't know they could print and didn't know how to print. These are small things that we may want to work on from the beginning of the year.
I would love to work with the ELL and SPED teachers to create an interest survey and be able to find books for their students and help get books into their hands.
Westmoor on a whole needs to build a culture of literacy.
|ELA Teacher representatives met in the summer to address the need for more relevant and responsive texts. We reviewed student survey data to inform need and then listed our objectives and “whys” for making the change. These objectives will provide the basis for the rubric we will use to evaluate new texts to adopt for the district. |
Westmoor will have a new EL Coordinator who you can work with along with Ms. Robinson, the District's Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountabiliity to ensure that our library is filled with books that are accessible for students with Disabilitues and English learners.
|Staff||Feedback on: "1.5-1 g. Provide 2 prep periods for mild/moderate teachers for IEP development, increased collaboration with general education teachers, attend IEP meetings, course content development and refinement" |
This is a very important goal for effective case management and retaining quality teachers, yet the funding seems inadequate ($70,000). Specifically, in order to implement a second prep period, Oceana would need allocated funding to hire an additional Special Educator, and this allocation is meant to cover all school sites. Please consider increasing the funding of this line item in order to make the second prep period a reality for our overworked, exhausted special educators.
|The $70,000 dollars alotted for this action is for the after hours stipend for teachers who are not able to have two prep periods. Jefferson and Terra Nova were able to provide 2 preps at no additional cost by collapsing Study Skills classes that only had a handful of students enrolled.|

We have seen no progress towards this, and $70,000 isn't a realistic estimate (unless it is per site). For every 4 mild/mod teachers it takes another teacher to provide each teacher the case management/testing prep period. Providing this should be made a much higher priority, because there serving our students and providing compliant timelines, meetings, and documentation simply isn't possible without it.
