iRODSOtheriRODS is an open-source data management middleware. It has 4 main features: 1) It can manage data stored on separate storage machines 2) Users can add metadata to files and folders 3) iRODS has a detailed permission system 4) iRODS allows administrators to automate processes (they can write pythojn code which get executed when certain 'events' happen. Furthermore, users can choose between different clients to interact with iRODS (a Python client, a command-line interface for Linux and a web interface).
KU Leuven offers an active data management service called ManGO, which is based on iRODS.
iRODS is being used in institutes around the world.
At KU Leuven, iRODS (in the form of the ManGO service) is currently in use by 80+ research groups at KU Leuven.
+ The metadata is a big plus, which we don't see in a lot of other storage solutions
+ KU Leuven has created a convenient web portal for iRODS, which also extends the metadata functionalities. It is available open-source at https://github.com/kuleuven/mango-portal
- Some technical skills are needed in order to run a stable iRODS server.

DataverseRepositoryDataverse is an open source web application to share, preserve, cite, explore, and analyze research data.
A dataverse repository is a software installation, which can host multiple virtual archives called Collections.
Each collection can contain multiple datasets, each with their own files and metadata.
KU Leuven data publication repository RDR (https://www.kuleuven.be/rdm/en/rdr) is based on dataverse.
115 institutions around the world are working with dataverse.
At the moment of writing (February 2024), RDR has 207 published datasets.

Google shared driveStorageCloud platform for data storage during the researchAt INBO we use google services as the backbone of our internal storage, email server, test processing software etc. Privacy concerns are addressed through contractual agreements. Positive: Very easy to work together on files, to add different access levels for both internal and external users, offline and online working, easy to find files as searches look through all 'drives' that you have access to, fairly unlimited data available, built-in data backup
Cons - Less user-friendly/functionality in file processing than other software such as windows office, Less customisable email/agenda than other software (but still fit for purpose!). We pay for the services, unsure how big the difference is outside of paid services.

EDC (electronic data capture)REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. While REDCap can be used to collect virtually any type of data, it is specifically geared to support online or offline data capture for research studies and operations. The REDCap Consortium, a vast support network of collaborators, is composed of thousands of active institutional partners in over one hundred countries who utilize and support REDCap in various ways.
While REDCap can be used for simple one-off public surveys without storing data on third party servers, it excels for longitudinal data capture in multiple forms and for multicenter clinical studies.
