HUNGER BAR: this displays in the right-hand info panel.
3
Your yellow Hunger bar decreases (to black) as you eat. If you eat and it makes no visible difference, you are still very hungry.
Think of it as an inverse Fullness bar.
(There's probably another Really Very Hungry bar which is invisible, in the game code.)
4
If you eat when your hunger bar shows very little yellow, it may turn all black and start filling back up with red. This is Nausea. The higher the Nausea, the higher your risk of puking when eating more. If you've puked in a gameday, you get a Nausea debuff for the rest of the gameday.
5
Using Stamina (by hunting, travelling, mining etc) makes you Hungry by refilling your Hunger bar with more yellow. So, if you can't eat three steaks within one minute of logging in, try running around doing things for a while and you may find that now you do have more room.

RESTAURANTS: places in towns where you go to buy food!Click over to the next tab (at the bottom of the page), "Restaurants - number-crunching" to see what gives you what!
8
Each restaurant has ten different food items. Every gameday (gametime, not by chronos), they have a different five of them available. See the "availability of daily specials" tab.(Ace High may only have 7.)

10
The best thing to eat depends on what's available and what you want to get out of it.
11
12
If you want to be generally healthy, you need to eat until no longer hungry every gameday, but not stuff or starve yourself too much.(Robots cannot eat, and Jokers do not get Fat or Malnourished. So this mostly applies to Humans, Kittymorphs, Squats, Mutants and Zombies.)
13
14
You need a good amount of Nutrition, and not too much Fat.Don't know stats for Meat.
15
You probably want to get around 100 total Mass per gameday? This is a guess.
16
17
If you want to have one gameday of really high stamina - for example, for doing lots of materials-gathering or building and only paying one cig for the kit - then you need to:
18
1 - not eat for a few gamedays beforehand, to get really hungry,
19
2 - chose food which has the highest Stamina per Mass ratio.(eg 'The Unrepentant', in PV)
20
With luck, you may be able to get over 600% stamina in one gameday. Also, stack stamina-bonuses (eg beds, boots, WCG)
21
22
HERBS: these spawn (slowly) on the map; you can collect them while travelling.
23
Sometimes, restaurant need you to supply Herbs before they'll cook for you. Lazy bastards still charge full price.

Each restaurant item seems to have its own Herb recipe - for example, PV's The Unrepentant needs 10 of each kind of herb.
CMJ has said that soon, herbs will start going bad in your backpack, so you can't stockpile them. Damn, that'll make this even harder. Also, they vanish at DK.
24
Herbs may also be useful for cooking your own meat (from butchering the carcasses of monsters). See the "Cooking Meat" tab. They are with qualifications. The provided stamina is 1 * tasty + 0.5 * decent + 0.25 * crap + 0.01 * herbs (any). Beginning at nine herbs (barely), roughly equal amounts of all herbs will provide you with a multiplier bonus, giving you more stamina per ingredient. This is not very useful for the Basic Pan but becomes more useful with the larger pans. Starting with fifteen herbs, you need only one each of the rarer herbs (Scroteweed and Steelseed) to unlock the full, doubling, bonus. See Cooking tab for further notes.
25
Herbs weigh 0.01kg.
Twitchleaf appears in Grass
Sneezeroot appears in Jungle
Scroteweed appears in Swamp (only around the lake)
Steelseed appears on Mountain (only in top right of map)

FOOD/HEALTH PROBLEMS: if you get rude messages and stamina penalties in your Newday screens
28
If the game says you are Malnourished: eat foods which have more Nutrition per Mass, and more and Nutrition per Fat.
29
If the game says you are Fat: eat foods which have less Fat per Mass, and make sure to use stamina every gameday! Take it down into the orange.

GOOD EATING BY NUMBERS
32
To help you decide which items to eat, you can click on any of the column headings in the "Restaurants - number-crunching" tab to sort by that factor.blue - the best
33
Some of the ratios (stamina per mass etc) are colour-coded to make it easy to see at a glance.green - good
34
At some point, the color grading got all mucked up. Just know that bigger number better.yellow - ok
35
These are fairly arbitrary categories. Feel free to change them.orange - poor
36
They're just to help give a quick idea of what's what.red - bad
