I’m Michael, I’m Brenden.

Join us and together we’ll dig deeper into the silver-screen classics of yesteryear as well as the box-office hits of today, we’ll take a closer look at the stories they tell, and see if we find the face of Jesus looking back.

We’re gonna explore the deeper meanings of these films; the plots and their twists; the characters and their choices; and how we can relate them to the gospel of salvation, and ultimately our Christian walk.

BLTBut was the rain fall a deus-ex-machina cop-out...

...or was it an intentional "eucatastrophe" from the author of the book?

-- As an art form, Literature makes way for symbolic storytelling whereas Cinematic Storytelling (at least, as of lately) demands reality...

mhMary Poppins: Restoring the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers.

Mary Poppins as John the baptizer (immerser). Or, is Bert really John?

A terrible day is coming for Mr. Banks. Can Bert and Marry Poppins save him from it?

Note the difference between Mr. Banks and his children in what they are looking for (in a nanny). Sounds like the difference between the Law and Grace. The law brings death; life is found in Christ Jesus.

John 1:17 ESV
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:20-21 NASB
The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Tabby: Their dad is mad.
Tabby: Oh no! Now they won't have any money to feed the birds.

• He's never taken us anywhere. How did you manage it?
• The one my heart goes out to is your father.
• It's that Poppins woman! ... She tricked me into taking the children to the bank.
• Here father, you can have the tuppence. Will that make everything alright?
• Your father's calling you. It doesn't sound like father.
Malachi 4:5-6 NASB
“Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.”

[Rabbit Trail]

Malachi 4:6 NET
He will encourage fathers and their children to return to me, so that I will not come and strike the earth with judgment.”

NET Translators’ Notes: 4:6 a tnHeb "he will turn the heart[s] of [the] fathers to [the] sons, and the heart[s] of [the] sons to their fathers." This may mean that the messenger will encourage reconciliation of conflicts within Jewish families in the postexilic community (see Mal 2:10; this interpretation is followed by most English versions). Another option is to translate, "he will turn the hearts of the fathers together with those of the children [to me], and the hearts of the children together with those of their fathers [to me]." In this case the prophet encourages both the younger and older generations of sinful society to repent and return to the Lord (cf. Mal 3:7). This option is preferred in the present translation; see Beth Glazier-McDonald, Malachi (SBLDS), 256.

KEY TEXT

Luke 1:17 NASB
It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Mark 7:9-13 NRSV
Then he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’ But you say that if anyone tells father or mother, ‘Whatever support you might have had from me is Corban’ (that is, an offering to God)— then you no longer permit doing anything for a father or mother, thus making void the word of God through your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many things like this.”

BLTA Lesson in Compassion: Feed the Birds vs. the Bankers

-- "Loving 'everybody' is easy because that's a concept. Loving those right in front of you is hard, because they are reality. Do the hard thing."

When we get to the bank, I'll show you what may be done with your tuppence, and I think you'll find it extremely interesting.

PS Philip Comment on THE AFRICAN QUEEN: True Compassion | FCC 138Hey guys, I love these classics episodes. There's an aesthetic to classic films I enjoy, it's kind of like the cinematic equivalent of comfort food. One thing I get from The African Queen is how at the beginning Rose was offering Charlie dinner and responding to the physical need he had, but it seemed her heart wasn't in it. It reminds me of 1 Corinthians 13, where Paul repeatedly tells us if he were to do all sorts of great spiritual things, but without love, it would amount to nothing in the end. It's convicting because it calls to mind how much I can do the "right thing" but without a loving heart.

The documentary John mentioned on Netflix called Five Came Back is indeed excellent. And what's great is many of the films those directors did for the war effort are on Netflix, as well.

Love the the show guys! #muhweeladgimli
