Good use of class time, had very engaging lectures that taught the subject material well. Spent time going over exam material as well as reviewing our exams after to ensure we were understanding our mistakes.

LCDR Sougiannis had the entire semester planned from the get go, used every class period efficiently, and made every class entertaining. He is the embodiment of the idea that the best professors are well versed in theatrics.

LCDR Sougiannis has never ever wasted our time on something not educational. He comes to class every single day prepared to teach us about finance and there has never been a moment in class where I was not engaged. Everything he says and presents to us in class has been beyond educational, not just during our time at the academy but beyond. His class is the one class where I learned something remotely useful here.

LCDR Sougiannis is one of the better officers on the yard, and its a shame to be losing him. His knowledge of finance and explanation of the subject is artistic and tasteful, engaging the entire class and educating far beyond the normal realms of an elective. He is a great person to be in the presence of, and if I wanted to be a pilot I would be in his office every day to learn from him.

We were always challenged to really apply this knowledge whether it was through case studies or him just asking us questions throughout the class period.

LCDR Sougiannis' frequent exams were designed to test understanding of the topics. He always gave formulas and references, but to do well on the exam, critical thinking was a must.

I struggled a lot in this class because of the amount of critical thinking that I had to do. His class is so sophisticated that not even chatgpt could help me (I tried, it didn't work), so I had to force myself to learn everything and because of that I have learned and retained a lot of information. I may not pass the final but that does not mean that I didn't appreciate the way he taught this class.

We had weekly online quizzes to go over the lectures and many exams spaced out every few weeks which I thought was perfect to ensure we were staying on top of work.

Online HW, exams, and especially the cases at the end of the course tested our learning well and the grades reflected my understanding of the topic.

They were not busy work, everything I did in this class served a clear purpose that helped develop my financial knowledge.

LCDR Sougiannis' class was a lot of work, but the payoff was well worth it. Assessments required effort and time but were not busy work.

All the work and questions he assigned this past semester has not only lined up with the dates that they were taught in class but also relates to the data that he uses. He put in so much work into his homework and assignments and you can tell he is a professor that truly cares for his students.

Just before Thanksgiving, the US Navy cancelled all but the first 2 Constellation class frigates, representing yet another failure of NAVSEA and the Navy at large. After the LCS and Zumwalt disasters, poor performance on the VA class subs and the Ford carriers, and the disappointing F35 program, this is no surprise. The admirals that started and failed these programs are disproportionately USNA graduates. Many of them blame the system, which while fair, ignores personal responsibility. I have not heard anyone at USNA mention this blatant failure since I have been back from Thanksgiving, besides to those who I have brought it up to.;LCDR Sougiannis began the semester with a discussion of the Navy's major acquisition failures, and how his class is a hedge against that happening in the future. This comparison has stuck with me all semester, through discussions of basic accounting, bond valuations, and portfolio theory. Financial Markets and Institutions has easily been the most applicable course I have taken at USNA. Articles I read about finance and our changing economy make sense now, since we discussed the terms in class. In my other Econ courses, I have something real to relate them back to. And LCDR Sougiannis teaches with a passion uncommon to this institution, boiling things down to the basics while still teaching at a high level due to the constraints he is under as someone trying to teach business school level classes to students with minimal background.;Last week, LCDR Sougiannis told us he will not be returning next fall, and that my class is the last generation of his Financial Markets and Institutions students. While I have no clue what the rationale is behind not retaining him as a professor, I am confident this decision is a mistake. USNA cannot expect its graduates to fix the Navy's major problems without giving Midshipmen opportunities to understand the fundamentals behind them. I am truly mystified as to why we take mini BDOC for three semesters, none of which anyone retains, but Financial Markets and Institutions is on the chopping block. Is plebe leadership or watered down engineering courses for nonmajors more important? Other Econ electives which students have shown to value less than LCDR Sougiannis' class will stay, but his will go. I have told pretty much everyone in my company to plan to take FE334 at some point, because I think it is that valuable of a class. I guess they will have to find something else.;I have no clue if anyone will read this SOF, and I know no changes will be made because of it. However, for the rest of my time at USNA, whenever I hear some O6 or Admiral mention how Midshipmen are the problem solvers of tomorrow, I will think about how this institution axed this course, and what skills USNA actually cares that we leave with. I consider myself lucky to have taken this class, and pity my classmates and future Midshipmen who will not even realize how much they are missing out on.
