After the LCS and Zumwalt disasters, poor performance on the VA class subs and the Ford carriers, and the disappointing F35 program, this is no surprise. The admirals that started and failed these programs are disproportionately USNA graduates. Many of them blame the system, which while fair, ignores personal responsibility. I have not heard anyone at USNA mention this blatant failure since I have been back from Thanksgiving, besides to those who I have brought it up to.;LCDR Sougiannis began the semester with a discussion of the Navy's major acquisition failures, and how his class is a hedge against that happening in the future. This comparison has stuck with me all semester, through discussions of basic accounting, bond valuations, and portfolio theory. Financial Markets and Institutions has easily been the most applicable course I have taken at USNA. Articles I read about finance and our changing economy make sense now, since we discussed the terms in class. In my other Econ courses, I have something real to relate them back to. And LCDR Sougiannis teaches with a passion uncommon to this institution, boiling things down to the basics while still teaching at a high level due to the constraints he is under as someone trying to teach business school level classes to students with minimal background.;Last week, LCDR Sougiannis told us he will not be returning next fall, and that my class is the last generation of his Financial Markets and Institutions students. While I have no clue what the rationale is behind not retaining him as a professor, I am confident this decision is a mistake. USNA cannot expect its graduates to fix the Navy's major problems without giving Midshipmen opportunities to understand the fundamentals behind them. I am truly mystified as to why we take mini BDOC for three semesters, none of which anyone retains, but Financial Markets and Institutions is on the chopping block. Is plebe leadership or watered down engineering courses for nonmajors more important? Other Econ electives which students have shown to value less than LCDR Sougiannis' class will stay, but his will go. I have told pretty much everyone in my company to plan to take FE334 at some point, because I think it is that valuable of a class. I guess they will have to find something else.;I have no clue if anyone will read this SOF, and I know no changes will be made because of it. However, for the rest of my time at USNA, whenever I hear some O6 or Admiral mention how Midshipmen are the problem solvers of tomorrow, I will think about how this institution axed this course, and what skills USNA actually cares that we leave with. I consider myself lucky to have taken this class, and pity my classmates and future Midshipmen who will not even realize how much they are missing out on. | ||||||||||||||||||||
