BME Students' Network

To create a BME network for students within QMUL

To create a framework of operation for the Network to run

To create a BME Students' working group to help inform the direction of the task

- Work towards getting a Bronze award in the Race Equality Charter
- The core working group (myself and the two BME reps) created and first meeting to do a rough year held

- Discussing what the definition is of an internel speaker with relevant students before talking to security,

- Application made and will be sent out to students

- University commitment to achieve a Bronze Mark in REC by 2020

- Delays in applications but forms have now closed and meeting the BME reps to select the best candidates

Library/Learning Resources

To ensure charging sockets in library are fixed

To get more charging sockets in the library

To reduce printing costs/give more free credit

To increase more online copies of books

To have an integrated service which allows students to see desk avaliability
December 2018August 2018- Broken charging sockets in the libraries are fixed and maintained

- Number of additional charging sockets in the libraries available to students

- Reduction of printing costs for students (free printing credit increased)

- Increase in number of e-books and their accessibility to students
- All students get given £10 every year centrally

- Library fines have been reduced 1 week loans from 50p to 10p and ordinary fines 10p to 5p

- Charing sockets on the Ground floor were fixed over the summer. Library management explained that the circuits always trip due to a lack of infrastructural capacity. They have plans to upgrade their circuits over next summer but I'm looking at some practical short term solutions

- Consultation stage to get smarter study spaces that let students pinpoint exact locations around campus to do work

TEF - 'Going for Gold'

To have Students' Union representation on all TEF work that the university is conducting

To increase the student voice within the TEF project

To lead TEF workstream about diversifying the curriculum
August 2018August 2019- NSS score for QMSU increased

- Visible student voice within the QMUL TEF 'Going for Gold' structures on all levels

- Schools' committment to increase diversity within their teaching

- More study spaces around campus
- Previous TEF Working Group is being transformed into the new TEF 'Going for Gold' structures on all levels, with the President and VP Education being involved throughout the process and other student representatives currently getting involved or invited to take part as the structures on lower levels are just being established

- Joint statement by the Vice-Principal Education and Vice-President Education with explicit reference to the SU about the GfG project

- Leading one workstream within Student Engagement

- All of the executive team have ownership of an area of work, including some of the part-time reps

- President co-chairs the operations group for the strategy and I sit on the operations and strategy group

- Inclusivity in the curriculum being accepted as one of the pilots for the strategy

- New refurbished areas in various locations around campus (including some new spaces) - more planned in the future

- Funding for 11 student interns with 2 working directly with myself and the other 9 being co-managed by an academic. More funding being allocated to hire students as researchers to inform the strategy

- A panel member for student engagement in the Going for Gold launch event for staff

Curriculum Review

To create an inclusive curriculum, with the student voice embeded
June 2019September 2018- Identify pilot modules

- Gather data on pilot modules

- Funding to get student interns to help with projects

- Deliver a workshop in each pilot module

- Deliver a long table in each pilot module

- Present prelimenary findings to EQSB

- Get a formal report on an "Inclusive Curriculum" to senate (led by the SU)
- Workstream proposal accepted by QMSE

- Currently going through school level NSS data with demographic breakdown to identify schools with highest disparities in student experience

- Funding granted from the Going for Gold strategy budget to hire two student researchers to help directly with this work

- Applications opened (over 250 applicants for these two and nine other positions)

- Met with Decolonise society as they have organised Long Tables before and gauge their thoughts on how they could be involved

BME Student Experience

To create an environment that is inclusive and supportive of our BME student population
August 2018June 2019 & on going - QMUL has a public commitment to getting a Bronze Award in the Race Equality Charter

- Compulsory unconscious bias training for staff introduced

- BME authors celebrated in the Library

- An institutional KPI to close the BME attainment gap established
- Commitment in our EDI report to achieve a Bronze Award by 2020

- Plans to make unconscious bias tailored and more accessable on a faculty level

- Commitment to takle BME attainment gap in our EDI report

Welfare in Education

To get compulsory restricted access to Q-review for students with SLPD

More study spaces during peak times
November 2018August 2018- Additional study spaces available to students during the undergraduate exam period

- Additional workshops on managing exam pressure and stress for students provided

- University policy on Q-review of all lectures.
- Informal agreement between DDS and schools to stop academics embargoing recordings for students that have accessability needs

- Smarter study spaces can help reduce burden on students to have to walk around campus to find space (hopefully to be implemented in Sem B)

- Get funding for 2 interns to assist with focus groups/research
