Previously a student, internships and newspaper exec roles in college but no direct publishing experience.
I think my department is great in comparison to others and I’m not overworked at all. My boss is really understanding and I got a merit raise and a raise with the “40-hour workweek.” The work is boring though and I want to transfer to editorial because I don’t think my work is important at all. I’ve been doing the same things and not been bumped up to more creative, impactful work even though I’ve asked.

Scouting Assistant -- started two years ago at $36k, first raise brought me up to $42k or so (to match me w/ entry level @ big 5s), next raise brought me up to just under $48k (I get raises annually) - part of most recent raise was cost of living, I think like 2% or soI'm in a fortunate position in that my boss is very concerned with retention, but I still feel powerless in a lot of ways -- expectation of unpaid overtime has kind of destroyed me at times

$15.37/hrfemalewhite22Guilford, CT
Managing fiction and non-fiction titles across multiple imprints and editors, writing and editing cover copy, preparing original and reissue titles for production including creating/formatting additional content and editing as necessary, aiding in the acquisition of new titles, communicating with marketing and production to coordinate titles, coordinating meetings, processing contracts and payments for authors and freelancers, market research related to title acquisition in a variety of non-fiction spheres, reading and evaluating proposals for acquisition, editing manuscripts.
starting pay: $15/hrRowman and Littlefield as of last month had a policy of starting editorial assistants/assistant editors out at $15/hr regardless of experience. They also do not give merit raises outside of promotions (or so I was told). I left earlier this year for better pay elsewhere (not in publishing) and when I last spoke to them HR implied I was not the only person to leave because of poor pay but that upper management was resisting raising starting rates. And, of course, they refused to give me more money to stay despite me allegedly being on track to be promoted to Associate Editor by the end of the year.

Intern ($500/mo), editorial assistant ($1000/mo) both at lit agencies

My agency specified they paid me “market rate for an assistant at a big 5” which I think is true but also goes to show how much power those salary floors have. Small companies are not always going to take steps on their own (and we have too few employees to organize) so big pubs do have an outsized impact on salary for everyone. A rising tide lifts all boats!

Independently running my own publicity campaigns (list-building, writing pitches/press releases, pitching, author care, etc.), submitting titles for early review, fielding publicity requests, reporting media hits, etc.
Internship experience only - $15/hr or unpaid The publicity manager on the team quit so I was working on my own in the publicity department for about a month. Inherited her campaigns + took on everything that was going on publicity-wise while they searched for a new publicist (that’s right, publicist, not publicity manager). I remained solo on several of the high-level campaigns, but when I asked for a raise due to my responsibilities they said no because it wasn’t in the budget despite paying the new person less money + me working at an associate level, as well as Bloomsbury’s record sales. (I actually just left the industry for a title and large pay bump, but wanted to share my recent experience)

EA starting was $35,000, after a year received a raise to $38,000I took on a secondary job for the company last fall (managing the EA and coordinating support). At the time I was told that they couldn’t tell me what the additional compensation would be, as promotions and salaries are only discussed in February. Come February, I was told that it was too late to negotiate because the budget was set in November and, in fact, employee compensation is “never negotiable.”

Academic publishers outsource to my company for production. Main point of contact for author throughout production process, from Word manuscript to finished print and ebook files. Manage copyediting, typesetting, indexing, proofreading and proof correction processes. Work to a short schedule set by the publisher. Responsible for quality control at all stages. Usually managing ~25 books at a time (this is over capacity, should be ~15).
Started at €20k, up to €30k after 14 months but there is no upward progression from here. I support 2 people, if we didn't live in a grimy tax dodge rent would take my entire paycheck. I love the job despite abusive authors but will eventually have to seek a better wage for quality of life.
