| FULL NAME | Richard John "Dick" Grayson
| SUPERHERO TITLES | Robin (I), Nightwing, Batman (II)
| POSSIBLE MYERS-BRIGGS PERSONALITY TYPE | ESTJ (specifically Extraverted Thinking (Te), Introverted Sensing (Si), Extraverted Intuition (Ne), Introverted Feeling (Fi))
| BIRTHDAY/PLACE OF BIRTH | -- most commonly March 20th (pre-Flashpoint), though it's also been said to be November 11th (Pre-Crisis), October 24th (Post-Crisis), and December 1st (Young Justice cartoon) -- his place of birth depends on canon but is generally not Gotham
| CANON FAMILY (various canons) | -- great-great-grandparents: Burton Crowne (via Amelia Crowne) -- great-grandparents: William Cobb and Amelia Crowne (via Gray Son of Gotham) -- grandparents: Gray Son of Gotham (via John Grayson), Martha and Thomas Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth (via Bruce Wayne) -- parents: John and Mary (Lloyd) Grayson, Bruce Wayne (through adoption) -- aunts/uncles: Karla and Rick Grayson (via John Grayson) -- siblings: Mitchell "Mitch" Grayson (movies only); Cassandra Cain, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Duke Thomas, Damian Wayne (all through being adopted) -- cousins: Johnny Grayson (via Karla and Rick Grayson) -- children: Mar'i Grayson, Jacob "Jake" Grayson (both with Koriand'r/Starfire), Thomas "Tommy" or "Johnny" Grayson, Bryce Grayson (both with Barbara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle), Elainna Grayson (with unknown mother)
| BACKGROUND PRE-BRUCE | -- lived with his parents, John and Mary Grayson, who performed for Haly's Circus as The Flying Graysons. the other people in the circus were like family to the Graysons. his parents were young but doing a good job of raising him -- called "Robin" as a nickname by his mom for being born on the first day of Spring in most canons -- was eventually added to the show (or at least always planned to join them) -- athleticism was already in his genes, but he was also trained by his parents to be a world class acrobat -- was close to the circus' elephant named either Sitka, Zitka, or Ellinor, and later had a stuffed animal that he named after her -- parents died on: July 15th (Pre-Crisis), October 31st (Post-Crisis), or June 27th (Pre-Flashpoint)
| HOW HE MET BRUCE & AGE WHEN IT HAPPENED | -- first met Bruce right after his parents died. Bruce came down to where Dick was standing, watching people/EMTs try to help his parents, and comforted Dick in some way, usually by wrapping Dick in his jacket the same way Jim Gordon did for Bruce after his parents died -- he then had to go and live in a Catholic orphanage (in some versions, he was first sent to juvie due to social services being "full", then to the orphanage) where he was likely mistreated -- during his stay there, he would go out at night and look for Tony Zucco, wanting to get revenge for his parents' death. in doing so he met Batman at least once, enough that he noticed certain things about him he later saw in Bruce -- several months (in most versions) passed before Bruce came and took him in as a foster son -- Dick was between 8 and 12 years old
| LIFE WITH BRUCE | -- pretty good actually (except when it wasn't) -- their relationship, especially at the beginning, was closer to partners/mentor & mentee/brothers than father and son, though eventually they did get to that point. they were (usually) very close and saw each other as equals -- they worked extremely well together as Batman and Robin, and in their day lives as well -- as Dick got older and spent more time with the Teen Titans, they sort of drifted apart, though Dick was still working with Batman at the same time -- Dick was taken to galas and similar rich people parties -- Dick was very close with Alfred -- in most versions, attended public school and did not take advantage of the enormous wealth at his disposal. other versions have Dick attending Gotham Academy, where he was sometimes part of the math team
| HOW HE SEPARATED FROM BRUCE & AGE WHEN IT HAPPENED | VERSION ONE/TWO (1984/1987): -- Dick feels he’s grown out of being Robin and decides to stop, does so while with the Teen Titans and soon after becomes Nightwing -- kinda retconned where Dick was shot by the Joker, leading to Bruce and Dick talking about it and Dick being “fired” in a calm, mutual agreement type of way -- he was an older teen/very young adult (most likely 19 years old) VERSION THREE (2005): -- Dick and Bruce have been arguing a lot, in part because Dick’s so busy with the Teen Titans he and Bruce have been drifting apart -- Bruce sees Dick as unreliable and Dick feels like Bruce is relegating him to an “errand boy” instead of the partner he’s supposed to be -- they argue A LOT -- Bruce is a big OOC meanie head who tells Dick “anything less than total devotion is a waste of my time” and fires him on the spot & it's very permanent -- Dick goes to Metropolis where he spends some time with Clark Kent, who tells him about the old Kryptonian legend of Nightwing and Flamebird -- after that he moved around a bit: first he went to the circus, then back to Gotham to establish his new ID as Nightwing, then to New York to be with the Titans again
| BACKGROUND POST-BRUCE | -- continued to work with both the Titans and the Outsiders for a long time as Nightwing, leading the teams at times -- was in a very serious and healthy relationship with Kory, and almost married her (got all the way to the ceremony before being interrupted) -- at some point moved to Bludhaven, where he fights crime by himself usually. has a friend named Amy Rohrbach who was his Jim Gordon -- worked several jobs around New York, Gotham, and Bludhaven including bartending and being a police officer -- was targeted by Blockbuster, who in part decimated Bludhaven in an attempt to get at/kill Dick -- during/after the events of Forever Evil, Dick was unmasked, killed, brought back to life, and thrown into the spy organization Spyral under the name Agent 37 -- was shot in the head by KGBeast, leading to a coma and eventually waking up without his memories. he goes by Ric Grayson, works as a taxi driver (and lived in his taxi), and dates a bartender named Bea Bennett -- ????????? idk there’s so much klfjsdjflksjdfj. this skips around a lot, watch out!
| RELATIONSHIP WITH BRUCE | -- c o m p l i c a t e d -- depending on canon and year and comic and author,,,,, they might have a really close relationship and always have (with bumps here and there), a sorta tense relationship where one or both question the love the other has for them, or other variations in between -- generally, Bruce is Dick's Dad, Mentor, and Best Friend. someone he can depend on and trust with just about everything, and know it's reciprocated -- when Dick was younger, their relationship was much more partners in (fighting) crime/brothers than father-son but it was still Bruce that bby Dick went to with his problems. Bruce would comfort him after nightmares, and had rules such as "do not climb on the chandelier" that Dick didn't listen to -- Dick was Bruce's "ward" from when he first comes to live with Bruce until he turns 18. he wasn't adopted until he was an adult, in part because Bruce didn't want to replace John Grayson, also because they don't have great communication skills and because Bruce was, as he himself said, too focused on fighting crime -- they argue like any other father-son duo would....................except that sometimes, mostly in AU worlds, when they argue, Bruce hits Dick. it's become more common as time in the real world goes on. that old meme of Bruce hitting Dick is from an AU where Bruce is evil, shown in part by him abusing Dick. more recently, after the events of Forever Evil, Bruce fought Dick, demanding that he go undercover with Spyral, as Dick was begging Bruce to stop basically. another moment is after Jason dies, Dick goes and talks to Bruce, where he does kind of accuse Bruce of being at fault for Jason's death, and Bruce hits him and also says he wishes he never took in Dick or Jason. this interaction isn't indicative of their normal relationship, however, and is instead both of them grieving. that doesn't make it okay but it's the truth. -- Dick will call him out on his shit (which is usually appreciated either in the moment or after the fact) -- Bruce is Super Proud of Dick in basically all aspects of his life and is, in a way, leaving the Justice League to Dick, who he believes will one day lead it -- "B" stands for Bitch -- Dick is one of Bruce's emotional crutches and due to this, his own feelings are often ignored in favor of Bruce's. he's also Bruce's right hand man, and is expected to step up when Bruce can't be Batman. when Bruce seemingly died, Dick had to give up his own life in order to live Bruce's, including doing his jobs and raising his kid -- they really do love each other despite having issues. Dick has said he would die for Bruce. they are friends, brothers, father and son, partners, and overall just extremely important to each other -- they are equals. point blank. Bruce is very aware of that and isn't afraid to admit that Dick has an edge over him when it comes to fighting skills, saying this as early as Dick's Robin days
| RELATIONSHIP WITH REST OF FAMILY | -- Alfred: respects and loves Alfred, who respects and loves him back. they have a grandfather-grandson relationship that was closer when Dick was younger -- Kate: they get along and can work together well -- Jason: their relationship was sorta doomed from the beginning because of circumstances and Bruce. BUT while both had insecurities, and there was initial antagonism, they became closer and even felt like brothers by the time Jason died. Dick at some point did accept Jason as the next Robin and gave him a suit, which is possibly the one Jason died in. after Jason came back things were a little rocky but didn't stay that way. they are brothers despite shitty writing wanting people to assume otherwise -- Cass: while not always close, their relationship is cute and loving. they respect each other and are usually friendly; he acted out the entirety of Cinderella for her -- Tim: is Dick's first real Little Brother, and because of that, their relationship is generally loving and friendly if not always super close. after Bruce died, things were tense--he fires Tim from being Robin, not to be mean but because he felt Tim was ready to grow into a new role, and also told Tim that he was a very important ally that Dick needed. he also protects Tim from Damian by telling Damian to stop insulting Tim. still he tries to be there for Tim as much as he can and makes sure to check in with him. trusts him (almost) implicitly -- Steph: she was his Batgirl, and they get along even if they don't always see eye to eye. Steph sees him more as a Batman/Dad figure than a Nightwing/Brother figure (tho no she doesn't see him as her dad) -- Duke: they get along (I THINK????? have they ever even met??????????????) -- Damian: started out sorta antagonistic but grew into a more healthy and happy relationship. mentored him as Batman, leading to a very close relationship. it can be interpreted as brotherly or more father-son, though once Bruce comes back, it shifts into brothers. he almost always has time for Damian and will do just about anything for him, and comforts him many times throughout various comics
| FRIENDSHIPS & TEAMS (in no particular order) | Teams/Affiliations: -- Batman Family -- Teen Titans -- Outsiders -- Batman Incorporated -- Justice League -- Spyral -- Court of Owls -- GCPD and BPD He has so many friends it's difficult to name them all, but here are some that aren't in the Batfam: Members of the Fab Five: Donna Troy/Wonder Girl, Roy Harper/Speedy/Arsenal, Garth/Aqualad/Tempest, Wally West/Kid Flash/Flash Other Teen Titans: Karen Beecher-Duncan/Bumblebee, Garfield Logan/Beast Boy, Rachel Roth/Raven, Koriand'r/Starfire, Victor Stone/Cyborg, Tara Markov/Terra, Joey Wilson/Jericho, Rose Wilson/Ravager, Hank Hall/Hawk, Dawn Granger or Dawn Hall/Dove Others: Grace Choi/Grace, Helena Bertinelli/Huntress, Tiger King of Kandahar/Agent 1, Zatanna Zatara/Zatanna, Amy Rohrbach, Clark Kent/Superman
| ROMANCES & PARTNERS (no particular order) | CANON (various versions): Capes: -- Bette Kane/Flamebird -- Koriand'r/Starfire -- Barbara Gordon/Batgirl (I)/Oracle -- Helena Bertinelli/Huntress/Matron -- Dawn Granger/Dove -- Shawn Tsang/Defacer -- Alia/Agent 8 Civilians: -- Beatrice "Bea" Bennett (bartender who dates 'Ric' Grayson) -- Raya Vestri (childhood friend) SUBTEXT (various versions): -- Roy Harper/Speedy/Arsenal -- Wally West/Kid Flash/Flash -- Tiger King of Kandahar/Agent 1 -- Midnighter -- Garth of Shayeris -- Joey Wilson/Jericho
| SEXUALITY | obviously this can be changed as you please, and also of course he's a cishet in the comics, HOWEVER -- based on comments he's made and meaningful glances thrown at half-naked men (especially Midnighter), it's possible he's bisexual -- has flirted with men before. even once told Bruce his flirting skills worked on a guy -- once said he could kiss Vic (& didn't really react when Vic was like "that's gay" or other comments about his short pants) -- has had several meaningful relationships with women (Kory, Babs, Shawn, Bea) so he's not gay -- when he met Joey Wilson, went from "u wanna go m8?!" to "I am in awe of this beautiful man" (almost literally) & there was serious subtext with both Joey and Roy -- he once told Roy Harper something like "I don't think I could make love if I wasn't in love", which implies demisexuality
| TRAUMAS | -- watched his parents fall to their death in front of him -- was forced to live in an orphanage and/or juvenile detention center that was varying levels of neglectful and abusive -- was between the ages of 8/9-12 when he first became Robin, meaning he was seeing all kinds of violence on the streets of Gotham from a very young age (this includes people being shot, stabbed, beat up, abused, raped, killed, etc) on a nightly basis -- was exposed to all kinds of toxins from Scarecrow's Fear Gas and Joker's toxins, which might have irrevocably warped his developing brain -- was fired from being Robin, the superhero identity he created in honor of his mother, and was immediately replaced by Jason, the title of Robin being given away without his consent -- was mind controlled by Brother Blood for a year -- was raped by Mirage pretending to be his girlfriend (i.e. she shapeshifted into Starfire), and was then broken up with by Starfire for "cheating" and all of his friends also accused him of cheating. later, his and Starfire's wedding was interrupted and they broke up despite having a generally loving and healthy relationship. this was mostly due to TPTB. -- was not told when Jason died, was not called home and did not get to attend the funeral because he was offworld on a mission at the time -- was the victim of Blockbuster targeting the people and places around him, destroying Blüdhaven and killing many people (including ones Dick only barely interacted with, simply BECAUSE he interacted with them) -- was broken up by Barbara due to his "relationship" with Tarantula (at that point, just her flirting with him while he attempted to keep her in line) -- was witness to and did not stop the murder of Blockbuster, leading him to have a panic attack; was raped by Tarantula while having the panic attack, and was in clear distress following it: he threw up, dissociated, acted differently than before it happened, and broke down crying at least once -- was forced to take up the mantle of Batman after Bruce died (traumatizing in it's own way, making that three parents he's outlived); in addition, had to take care of and train Damian, help out at Wayne Enterprises, keep track of his younger siblings, and more -- was unmasked on television -- actually died. then was forced to fake his death (Bruce beat him until he agreed to do it) and have all of his friends and family believe him to be dead. also didn't get to talk to anyone he was close to for months except (occasionally) Bruce -- witnessed a woman he had recently had sex with die right in front of him -- was shot in the head and lost many many MANY memories. is now ric grayson which is a trauma in its own right -- has felt suicidal or at least passively suicidal at different points in his life -- in some canons, has to deal with the fact that Haly's Circus was secretly a way for the Court of Owls to groom future Talons, and that he was meant to be one
| STANCE ON NO-KILLING RULE | -- as a child, wanted to kill Tony Zucco -- is friends with and/or very close to people who kill and doesn't seem to actively have a problem with it though with some of these people, he has guided them into less lethal methods -- was witness to Blockbuster's death and allowed it by stepping aside when Tarantula shot him, but immediately had a panic attack after. when Bruce finds out he says, "You lost sight of the value of Roland Desmond's life. If you need me to forgive you for that, I probably can. But it won't mean anything until you forgive yourself." -- once beat the Joker to death after Joker made him believe Tim was dead (& made a comment about Jason). this traumatized him even though the Joker was later revived -- while working for Spyral, actively made non-lethal shots and refused to kill -- it's possible that he's not as Anti Killing as he is afraid of losing Bruce's affection -- it's also possible that he's very Anti Killing but doesn't want to lose his friends and family members who kill just because of that
| STRENGTHS | -- he's confident and funny, charming and witty, friendly and easy to get along with -- very strong-willed and hard to manipulate. he's determined and disciplined, and responsible. dedicates himself to things he cares about, and defends those things passionately. his resolve is well-known -- he's honest and logical. when people come to him with questions, he doesn't beat around the bush and rarely lies -- he's compassionate and a good friend. he cares about people and wants to help them, and wants to keep others from going through the things he's gone through -- reaches out to his friends and family, encourages them to talk and open up to him, and listens to them when they do. he's patient with them and tries to help as much as he can -- very intelligent. he usually outsmarts his opponents, because he's an expert tactician and great leader. because he's logical, he's good at being objective and putting his teammates where they need to go based on their strengths. very good detective -- independent. knows what he wants and goes for it, does what he can to reach his goals on his own merit. relies on himself and enjoys the challenge of taking care of himself -- loyal to those he loves/cares about. will do anything he can for them, including sacrifice parts of himself (or his life in general) -- adapts to change easily, especially concerning his role in groups (being a leader vs being a teammate) and when plans don't go the way they expect -- really good with kids and at calming people down
| FLAWS | -- he's stubborn and unyielding. has a good idea of what's right and what's wrong, and doesn't sway from it. sometimes imposes his views on others, generally refuses to let go of his morals -- like most of the Bats, he doesn't deal with his emotions correctly (or at all, sometimes). he bottles them up and ignores them for as long as he can get away with. not to say he can't or doesn't express his emotions, he's just bad at showing ones that aren't irritation/anger/etc -- can be insensitive and doesn't always think before he speaks, especially if he's upset about something. will lash out at people -- likes to be in control of things, especially missions -- puts a lot of pressure on himself in most aspects of his life, via unrealistic expectations, lots of work, being in charge of things, etc -- has high expectations of others too, and can be impatient with them if they don't reach those expectations -- can be judgemental and make snap judgements -- adrenaline junkie who doesn't fear death and has fun doing extremely dangerous things, putting himself at unnecessary risk -- doesn't like getting help/not earning things himself, and generally doesn't like giving others handouts -- usually puts Nightwing before Dick Grayson. the vigilante part of his life comes before the civilian part, meaning he doesn't have much of an outlet or escape from the traumas of being Nightwing
| SKILLS & TRAINING | -- escape artist -- hacker -- impersonator -- polyglot -- polygraph beater -- swordsman -- resistance to interrogation and torture -- musician/singer -- scientist and mathmetician -- medical examiner -- paramedic -- automotive engineer, mechanic, welder, vehicle modifier, handyman -- master of disguise -- gymnast and master acrobat -- detective -- tactian -- indomitable will -- intimidation -- genius level intellect -- master of stealth, espionage, infiltration, and sabotage -- expert marksman -- weapon proficiency -- master martial artist (aikido, kung fu, escrima, capoeira, judo, hapkido, taekwondo, jiu-jitsu, karate, savate, sambo, ninjitsu, boxing) Peak Human Condition: strength, speed, agility, reflexes, stamina, endurance Trained by John and Mary Grayson, Bruce Wayne, others
| FANON THINGS TO AVOID OR USE IN MODERATION (*Caveat: do what you want forever) | -- overly sexual, someone who has lots of partners or one night stands, cheater/doesn't put much importance in being faithful -- always happy/cheerful/optimistic. cannot get angry or is EXTREMELY slow to anger. on the flip side, gets angry easily but for the wrong reasons/is always wrong -- never stands up to Bruce or always agrees with him. or feels inferior/like a disappointment to Bruce -- is a perfect brother all of the time and is always there to hug his siblings and make them feel better -- eats cereal as often as possible -- his ass is the most well known/cared about thing about him -- family's main source of comedic relief with little to no brains behind the quips/one-liners -- impulsive and doesn't think things through -- doesn't know how to take care of himself/can't cook/can't or doesn't clean -- has no reason to be upset with Bruce, Jason, Tim and Damian for various reasons -- immediately or never thought of Bruce as his father -- never had a falling out with Bruce or was at fault for it -- is stupid and did not like school -- has no friends outside of the family, or is only friends with one person (often Wally West) -- is super obnoxious all the time -- is a bad detective -- was not friendly to Jason when Jason was Robin (or at least, was never friendly at all) -- has no traumas besides his parents' deaths, or that his biggest trauma is Bruce not adopting him as a child -- has no fashion sense -- lives at the Manor or works mainly in Gotham all the time -- can't hack computers/phones/other technology

| FUN FACTS: | -- according to Midnighter, Dick's Nightwing fighting style is like jazz. according to Dick, Robin's fighting style is like punk -- no one in his building in Bludhaven had anything bad to say about him when asked by a person hired to get dirt on him -- as a child, his favorite meal was Alfred's crab-stuffed mushrooms -- hates capes and prefers not to wear them, especially as he gets older -- calls his batarangs Wing-Dings -- before being fired, Alfred had made a new Robin suit that had pants -- Alfred made the fingerstripes suit as a present after Dick helped during Knightfall -- hates coconuts -- likes pineapple on his pizza -- depending on the comic/author, his place is either filthy or so spotless it looks unlived in -- he learned to use escrima sticks when he quit working for Bruce early in his career and joined a gang of young hooligan vigilantes. also implied he picked up the habit from playing with juggler devil sticks -- got the mullet after a haircut from Mirage (acting as Kory) -- one of his costumes had mini Nightwing logos on the bottom of his boots -- can and will pretend to be a bad shot but knows how to use guns -- when he's on bedrest, he'll watch Unsolved Mysteries and call in with tips that help solve cases -- helped Donna find her biological family. also called himself Deadeye Dick in the process -- fully moved out of the Manor when Bruce took on Jason -- early in his career as Robin, a hostage died after he lost a bet to Two Face. this scarred him and set up the rivalry between Two Face and the Robins (and was also one of Dick's first collars as Batman). TF also beat him so badly he almost died, and was benched for some time afterwards -- oftens sings The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze to scared children in order to help them calm down -- as an adult, sometimes goes back and works for Haly's Circus. in some continuities, he owns it and paid for it with money his parents left for him |
