Why should you calculate the ROI of your L&D and training programs?

This template aims to help L&D and training teams to accurately calculate, and demonstrate the business impact, of the programs they run.


Calculating your ROI will enable you to secure leadership buy-in as you'll be able to use this information to clearly show the impact of your training programs, and secure investment for future programs.


In turn, this calculator will help you to identify underperforming campaigns that need to be optimized in order to deliver a return.


You’ll find templates for several different training types, including sales training and employee onboarding training within this spreadsheet. We recommend you complete this template before you launch a training course to predict the potential return on investment.


If you’ve already launched your course, you can still use this template to demonstrate the impact it has had.

How to use the Training ROI Calculator

1. To start calculating your Training ROI you’ll need to click ‘File’ > ‘Make a copy’ or ‘Download’ as a Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) file.

2. At the bottom of the file, you’ll see a tab dedicated to each training type. Choose that tab that relates to the type of training you want to calculate the ROI of.

3. In each tab, you'll find a Training Outline, Core Metrics, Pre-Training Program Launch, Post-Training Program Launch and Training Programs Costs sections with cells which you need to complete.

4. Once you've added the revelant data to these sections your high level costs, savings and ROI calculation will be displayed in the ROI Calculation section at the end of the sheet.

Breakdown of each section within the Training ROI Calculator

Training DriverWho are you training? If you’re responsible for training different audiences with different goals, outline what training audience’s program you’re measuring from the get-go.

Training AudienceWhat training are you providing that is helping your team reach its goals?

Primary ObjectiveRecord your primary goal, in other words the tangible result you want to achieve as a result of running the training program.

Core MetricsRecord the metrics related to your primary goal.

Pre-Training Program LaunchDetail the results from your most recent training program prior to the launch of the new program. This data is used to compare previous program results to your new program's impact.

Post-Training Program LaunchRecord the post-launch results of your new training program. We recommend waiting 3 to 6 months launch before collecting this data. List all training costs associated with the new program - content, delivery, trainers, resources, tools.
