CurrentSourceTransfer Credit Policy
2
CIM
https://www.cim.edu/student-life/policies
Transfer applicants and current CIM students may have earned credits from other accredited institutions transferred to CIM. Such transfer credits are applicable toward fulfillment of CIM program requirements, under the following conditions:

Credits are transferable only if the course grade is a "C" or higher. Therefore, courses completed on a Pass/Fail basis do not transfer unless the school where such courses were taken has a published policy stipulating that Pass is equivalent to at least a grade of "C";
In placing approved transfer courses on the CIM permanent record, only credit appears. Grades in transfer courses do not appear and do not affect the CIM grade-point average;

Transfer credit earned in theory, music history/literature, and performance courses is subject to CIM faculty evaluation as a prerequisite for transfer. CIM equivalency examinations may be required to determine transferability of credits in these areas. Advanced Standing credit in core music subjects is awarded by Placement Examination. The number of credits awarded is determined by the demonstrated skill level of the incoming student, not by the number of previously earned credits at another institution;
Transfer credits for additional non-elective course work are based upon evaluation of a student's transcript and required CIM equivalency examinations, which must be completed during the first semester of study at CIM;

Course work intended to fulfill CWRU major or minor program requirements is transferable only with the approval of the appropriate CWRU department. Such approval must be sought additionally before undertaking study at another institution;

Credits earned at schools operating on a quarter system are reduced by one-third when converted to CIM's semester-credit equivalency;
Graduate students are limited to a maximum of six transfer credits. Though undergraduate transfer applicants have no such credit limitation, all transfer students, except DMA applicants, are subject to a minimum two-year, full-time residency requirement;

Current CIM students must first obtain approval from the CIM Registrar for transfer course work and receive a letter of approval for transient study, which is required by the host institution.

Final determination of transfer status cannot be made until final, official transcripts from all previously attended schools have been received, all appropriate admission testing has been completed, and all necessary examinations for non-elective course work have been evaluated. Each transfer student meets with the CIM Registrar to confirm final status. All transferred credits are applicable toward fulfillment of CIM diploma or degree requirements.

Colburn
https://www.colburnschool.edu/conservatory/apply-to-the-conservatory/transfer-applicants/
We welcome students who may have begun their musical education elsewhere, but wish to finish their degrees at the Colburn Conservatory of Music. For the most part, transfer candidates must follow the same application process as new students with a few additional requirements.

We do not accept transfer applicants into our Master of Music degree program.
We require both high school and college transcripts for any completed coursework.
Transfer applicants enrolling at the Colburn Conservatory of Music must formally withdraw from their current institution prior to transferring to Colburn.

----Transfer of Credits----

Some credits may be transferable to the Colburn Conservatory. Requests for credit transfers are made during your first semester of enrollment in the Conservatory.

----General Education Credits----

Completed humanities courses with a grade of C or better at another accredited undergraduate college or university shall be considered for transfer.

We may accept up to 50% of general education and humanities credits (12 credits total) for transfer applicants who have completed at least two years of post-secondary education.

For students who have less than two years of post-secondary education, including high school students who have earned college credits, we may accept up to 25% (6 credits total) of general education and humanities credits.

All transfer applicants must provide us with official transcripts showing final grades. Also, we may ask for course descriptions, syllabus, or textbooks and class materials to determine course equivalency.

----Music Theory and Ear Training----

Credit for these courses at Colburn is based on assessment tests. The results will determine whether you’ll receive credit for equivalent classes at Colburn.

----Music History----

Placement into music history courses at the Colburn Conservatory of Music will be based on a review of your transcripts, which must include course names and final grades. Also, we may ask for course descriptions, syllabi, or textbooks and class materials to determine course equivalency.

----Orchestra, Applied Study, and Chamber Music----

Regardless of your previous school experiences, we expect all students at the Colburn Conservatory of Music to enroll in applied studies (lessons) and orchestra (except pianists) during each semester. We also expect all students to enroll in chamber music classes for 50% of their enrollment.

----Determination of Transfer Credits----

The final determination of whether your previously earned credits from another college or university will be applied toward your work at the Colburn Conservatory of Music will be decided by the Dean of the Conservatory in consultation with faculty. Typically this decision will be finalized during the registration process. Any adjustments to transfer credits or placements are made at the discretion of Colburn and in consultation with your academic advisor.

Curtis
https://www.curtis.edu/academics/policies/policies-and-procedures/credit-by-examination/
Students may meet requirements in musical studies and supplementary performance subjects by examination. Credit for Advanced Placement examinations may be given in certain liberal arts subjects for test scores of 4 or 5.

The Curtis Institute of Music will accept credit for liberal arts and music history courses taken at an accredited college, university, or music school. Transfer courses must have a grade of C or better. Curtis will examine all applicable transcripts before granting the transfer of credits. Final assignments of transfer credit are made by the registrar.

During a student’s enrollment at Curtis, including semester break and summer vacation periods, any course taken for transfer credit must have approval of the dean. Curtis students who wish to take a course for transfer credit should contact the dean for consideration with the following information: the name of the institution at which the course is offered, the course name, and a course description and/or proposed syllabus.

Transfer students may receive credit for up to twenty-seven semester hours in liberal arts subjects. Students with a previous undergraduate degree must take a minimum of fifteen semester hours in liberal arts subjects at Curtis to receive a Bachelor of Music degree from the Institute.

Eastman
https://www.esm.rochester.edu/registrar/policy/04-00/#04.03
Transfer students

An individual is considered to be a transfer student at the Eastman School if he or she earned college level credit while matriculated (enrolled as a candidate for a degree) at an accredited university, college, or community college. Students who earn college-level credit while attending high school or who earn college level credit that is not part of a degree program are considered first time first-years and not transfer students.

Transfer credit for transfer students

The Eastman School reserves the right to validate, by examination, credit presented as requisite to a course for which a student wishes to register and which is required in his or her curriculum. All transfer credit will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in conjunction with specific department chair.

Music Performance Component

Credit by examination may be awarded in applied study for students who are placed at a sophomore or junior level. This same principle applies to ensemble credit.
A Piano placement examination is given during orientation week. Although prior study may result in advanced placement, no transfer credit is awarded.

Music Academic Component

Music History transfer credit may be awarded if the prior coursework is closely aligned with the requirements for the Eastman Music History core sequence and a minimum grade of B- was earned.
The Music Theory placement examination is given during orientation week. Although prior study may result in advanced placement, no transfer credit is awarded.

All entering transfer students will be required to take EIC101 (Colloquium) unless they can present documentation that they have taken a similar course at another school. Depending on their remaining degree requirements, students transferring in with junior class standing may be exempt from taking EIC101. The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs will make this determination.

Humanities/Science Component

Students transferring from accredited institutions may, without examination, have the credit from humanities and sciences courses validated for credit. Each course must be worth a minimum of 3 credits, and a grade of B- or better must be earned. Credit from courses taken on a pass/fail basis or distance-learning courses (correspondence or online courses) will not be considered for transfer credit.
Transfer students who have completed, with a minimum grade of B-, an equivalent writing course at another accredited college may be exempted from FWS121 (First-Year Writing Seminar).

Transfer credit for matriculated students who enter as first-time first-year

Undergraduate students may take two humanities/science courses at another institution and transfer up to 6 credits into their Eastman School of Music bachelor of music degree program. Each course must be worth a minimum of 3 credits, and a grade of B- or better must be earned. Credit from courses taken on a pass/fail basis will not be considered for transfer credit. Correspondence or online courses will not be accepted for credit. Approval from the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs must be obtained in advance of taking the courses in order to be sure that the course will fulfill Eastman graduation requirements. Pre-approval is not required for courses taken before enrolling at Eastman.

Please submit via email the following:

Name of institution where you will take the course
Course title, course number and number of credits
The link to the college or university’s course description in their course catalogue
Upon completion of an approved transfer course, the transcript from the course must be submitted to the Eastman Registrar’s Office in order to finalize the transfer of credits.

Collegiate-level courses taken during high school may be considered for humanities transfer credit if they satisfy all of the following conditions:

They were not taken in fulfillment of any high school degree requirement.
They do not appear on the high school transcript.
They are not included in the high school G.P.A. calculation.
If granted, such transfer credits count toward and are subject to the 6-credit limit mentioned above. Students may be asked to provide appropriate supporting documentation from the school district.

Credit more than five years old will not be accepted for transfer.

Juilliard
https://www.juilliard.edu/campus-life/tuition-financial-aid/satisfactory-academic-progress-guidelines
Students enrolled in the bachelor’s degree programs may receive transfer credit for liberal arts electives as described below. Exemption from other requirements is evaluated only through placement examinations. Credit hours from another institution that are accepted toward the student’s educational program must count as both attempted and completed hours. Graduate students are not eligible for transfer credit.

A maximum of 12 elective credits in liberal arts may be transferred from an accredited college or university. The following guidelines apply: 1) the course must be taken during the student’s college years — courses taken while in high school are not eligible; 2) the course must be an eligible elective as determined by the registrar; 3) the grade must be at least C; and 4) the student must provide the registrar with an official transcript.

Students who are approved for coursework at Barnard or Columbia through the cross registration program may satisfy up to 12 liberal arts credits in this way. Note: Approved transfer students who have already received the maximum of 12 transfer credits may satisfy 6 of their remaining 12 credits through the cross-registration program.
Juilliard does not grant credit for high school advanced placement courses. Since the liberal arts requirement for a Juilliard bachelor’s degree is minimal (one course per semester), it is important that this requirement be fulfilled with courses taken during residency at Juilliard so that students are able to participate in an interdivisional learning experience.

Mannes
https://www.newschool.edu/admission/prospective-undergraduate-students/transfer-students/
Mannes School of Music

Mannes admits first- and second-year transfers.
You may receive credit for liberal arts courses.
Music courses taken elsewhere may be approved for transfer depending on the student's placement tests, interview, and transcript evaluation.

School of Jazz and Contemporary Music
Jazz admits first-, second-, and third-year transfers, including international transfers.
You may transfer up to 64 credits.
8
MSM
https://www.msmnyc.edu/admissions/admissions-faq/
Your degree level at the time of admission (freshman, sophomore or junior) is determined by your performance at the audition. It does not reflect the number of credit hours that will transfer from your previous institution, nor will it determine the number of years it will take for you to complete your degree at MSM. For example, if you have only completed one year of study in a Bachelor’s degree program, you will only be admitted to the freshmen or sophomore level. If are accepted as a junior transfer, your estimated time to degree completion may be two years or longer.

MSM accepts up to twelve transfer credits of Humanities electives. Courses that will be considered for transfer credit are those with a strong writing component (e.g., Literature, Philosophy/Religion, History, Languages, etc.). Music courses do not transfer, but credit can be obtained in certain areas through placement exams. The Registrar will make all decisions regarding transfer credits. If you have any questions about transferring, please email the Registrar at registrar@msmnyc.edu.

NEC
https://necmusic.edu/transfer-applicants
NEC accepts transfer applications at the undergraduate level. In addition to completing the First-Year Applicant requirements, transfer applicants must submit a short statement (in the online application) explaining their reasons for wanting to transfer to NEC.

Transfer applicants must submit transcripts from all colleges attended. Applicants who have earned fewer than 32 college credits at the time of their application must also submit official high school transcripts. To be fully evaluated for transfer credit, enrolling students must provide course descriptions and official transcripts. Students with transcripts in a language other than English must provide a certified translation and an explanation of grades, class hours, and course descriptions. The full evaluation of all completed college work combined with the results of the audition and music examinations taken during NEC orientation will determine final placement and thus the expected duration of the program of study.

NEC does not accept transfer applications at the graduate level. Master of Music students may request to transfer up to four graduate credits from other institutions but may not use transfer credits to complete their program in fewer than the required minimum number of full-time semesters.

Oberlin
https://www.oberlin.edu/admissions-and-aid/arts-and-sciences/transfer-and-visiting-applicants#app-step-5
Transfer Process
An applicant is considered to be a transfer student if they meet one of the following criteria:

They have been enrolled in a degree-seeking program, regardless of how many credits have been earned.
They have earned more than 30 semester hours of credit without being enrolled in a degree-seeking program. This is determined on a case-by-case basis, so students who fall into this category are encouraged to contact the Office of Admissions to discuss their situations.
Transfer students may apply for either the spring or the fall semester. If you are currently in your first year of study at another college, you may only apply for fall admission.

Transferring Credit
Credits are typically eligible for transfer if they are received from an accredited institution and are in a subject area that falls within the scope of a liberal arts education. The total allowed for all transfer of credit may not exceed 16 full academic courses (64 semester hours). We can’t guarantee that credit accepted for transfer will automatically be applied toward your major; acceptance requires the approval of the appropriate department or program. You have a time limit of one year from when you enter Oberlin to request transfer of credit and provide documentation.

What We Look For
When reviewing the applications of transfer students, Oberlin admissions counselors engage in a holistic evaluation process. This means many factors are considered with each application, with no one component of the application singled out as most important.

We seek a transfer class that represents a variety of talents, viewpoints, and achievements.
We require both high school and college transcripts, though we do place more weight on the work a student has completed in college.
We prefer a high school record demonstrating proficiency equivalent to four years of English, four years of mathematics, three years of the same foreign language, three years of laboratory science, and three years of social studies. If the high school record does not display these proficiencies, we strongly recommend that efforts are made to meet these benchmarks in college.
We prefer applicants to have maintained breadth in their college curriculums to the extent permitted by their current programs.

Peabody
https://peabody.jhu.edu/academics/academic-calendar-resources/academic-affairs/transfer-credits/
Students must complete most of the requirements for a degree or diploma through credits earned for courses taken at Peabody as a matriculated student. However, students may transfer some credits taken at accredited post-secondary schools or through the accelerated testing of recognized providers (such as the College Board or International Baccalaureate).

Transfer credits are accepted pending the submission of necessary documentation to the Office of the Registrar and in consultation with the Office of Academic Affairs. Peabody can only transfer credits for students who have already matriculated into degree or diploma programs. New students are welcome to contact the Office of Academic Affairs before enrolling but will not be able to begin the process of transferring credits until after enrolling in classes.

Students who are interested in earning credit from an internship should submit a proposal to the Office of Academic Affairs.

Like most conservatories, Peabody does not accept transfer credits for lessons, juries, or recitals. For undergraduate transfer students, the year of study (sophomore or junior) is determined by the department at the time of the audition and validated by the year-end departmental jury. Peabody does not accept transfer credits for ensembles. Performance majors must participate in ensembles in every semester of instruction, and transfer students must participate in ensembles for at least two years. Additional requirements for transfer credit may be found in the Academic Catalog.

Students interested in taking classes at an outside institution with the purpose of transferring credit to Peabody should contact the Director of Advising to discuss their plans. Students should then fill out the Outside Credit Pre-Approval form for each class they plan to take at an outside institution.

After completing approved classes at an outside institution, students should have an official transcript from the institution sent to the Peabody Conservatory Registrar:
