I've got in-house and agency experience and have worked on projects well-oiled and scrappy, teams of 20 and teams of 1, smooth sailing and total disaster. I'm happy to help others learn from my mistakes.

A few ideas for talks:
*differences between in-house and agency roles, pros and cons of each
*So you want to go back to school: what I learned as a self-taught UXer going back to graduate school
*The importance of egoless design: hearing constructive criticism and great ideas can come from anywhere
*What to do when you see a UX disaster coming: how even junior UXers can help when their spidey sense goes off.

I specialize in interactive sessions and getting people to work with each other in small groups as well as in plenaries. Just as good at developing and running all day workshops as 45 minute quick updates on a topic.

I bring background as a design-build contractor, instructional designer and craft writer (two books, numerous articles) to the perspective of an educator (MAE, 1992) and a librarian/information scientist (MLIS, 2002) and UxD (another masters, 2015, forthcoming).

Things I know a lot about:

Getting master's degrees. No kidding. I can explain how to navigate the entire process of applying to and surviving grad school. I can also explain why you might have been rejected, and why that doesn't mean you should give up and what you should do to keep trying to get in.

Writing proposals, getting accepted to speak at conferences, and preparing for the event. (I've been a speaker at education, herbalism, information science, information architecture, librarianship, and non-profit association venues.) I'm full of little tidbits, like this timing tip: Most people speak and comprehend at about 150 words a minute, so your script for a 10 minute talk shouldn't exceed 1500 words.

How to work with stakeholders to get buy-in.

User Experience Research, Client Services, Managing Teams, Career Development
The current topic that I've been speaking about as of late is Market Research vs. User Experience Research. Both roles — on face value — seem to be almost the same in many organizations today (especially to people in the organization who are in non-research roles). However, how each role defines and does their work radically differs. When I speak on this topic I dimensionalize how these roles are similar and different and what each brings to the world of UX. The presentations around this topic are done in the spirit of fostering a better and non-competing work environment between these roles.

I've also spoken about how to design rigorous research studies — from start to finish. I teach on this topic at the Institute of Design, IIT. This includes dissecting business goals, laddering them down to research goals to the design of the project screener, discussion guide and analytical plan.

My firm also does a lot of emerging market research, so I could offer a lot to this type of discussion as well.
