| SpoilerTV Pilot Script Quick Reviews 2020/21 | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
| Show | Rating | Comment (Reviewer) | Review Date |
| American Auto (NBC) | 3 | This pilot script hasn't met a stereotype it didn't like. There's a racist white car, an older lady who can't figure out technology, a female CEO of a car company who doesn't get "car people," and an entitled, upperclass male just for starters. Like the car in this episode, the pilot needs a complete overhaul. It did make me laugh in a couple of places though. (Dahne | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Blood Relative (FOX) | 7 | Genes are the new bones. This procedural with two overarching mysteries has potential. With Melissa Leo and Tate Donovan set to star, the acting will be great. Here’s hoping the writers can keep viewers well fed with the mystery of the week while doling out enough clues to keep viewers engaged in the season long mysteries, one personal and one conspiratorial. (Alison D | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Carla / Call Me Kat (FOX) | 7 | The concept is a bit over-played and similar to Fleabag very soon after it got very popular, and I’m not the biggest fan of Mayim Bialik, but I’ll give it a try because the script is so good. (Laura W | 3/29/2024) | 29-Mar-2020 |
| Carla / Call Me Kat (FOX) | 10 | I'm giving the script a 10 because it reads like an episode of the UK version of Miranda. I could hear the voices like those in the original. It helps of course that some of the dialogue is from the Miranda pilot, just with some slight changes. Comic timing and chemistry (and Miranda Hart) made the original a joy to watch (even the awkward secondhand embarrassment couldn't stop me from bingeing Miranda). If the script stays this true to the original, the success of this show will come down to the casting. (Bex | 2/24/2024) | 24-Feb-2020 |
| Carla / Call Me Kat (FOX) | 4 | It was... meh... quite different that the fist episode of the original show (which full disclosure was an episode which made me laugh a lot). Only one piece of dialogue was taken straight out of that pilot and I can see Mayim delivering it well. Honestly I think this will live or die on whether or not the execution will strike up the right tone and if the cast chemistry holds up. (Folie-lex | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Clarice (CBS) | 7 | While this is no Bryan Fuller's "Hannibal", the script read like Thomas Harris wrote it himself with perfect dialogue and scene descriptions that are piercingly sharp and yet, directly rudimentary. As a sequel to Silence of the Lambs, exploring an unknown period between novels/films, this feels true to everything that came before the back half of the Hannibal novel. My only real concerns are how they will pull the gritty 1990's feel in a way that doesn't feel outdated or how the show can sustain itself without a villain like Hannibal or something metaphysical to elevate it? On the plus side the characterization feels right on par with characters presented in SOTL and the beginnings of the FBI agency battle presented in Hannibal. But everything may hinge more on the right cast. (Darthlocke | 2/22/2024) | 22-Feb-2020 |
| Crazy For You (NBC) | 6 | To be honest, I read through most of the script thinking it wasn't for me. I didn't connect to any of the characters and found some of them downright irritating. However, the twist at the end has me intrigued so if it gets picked up, it gets an automatic 3 episodes from me. (Dahne | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Debris (NBC) | 8 | I'm intrigued to find out what's really going on behind the simple existence of the Debris. (Prpleight | 2/24/2024) | 24-Feb-2020 |
| Debris (NBC) | 7 | There’s a lot here, almost too much for a pilot, but it’s a twisty, layered, and compelling successor to Fringe. Between the characters and mythology, this one could be something great. (Alison D | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Debris (NBC) | 8 | Some contrived and expected twists and one "lens flare" comment in the stage direction that really showed how desperate this show wants to follow in JJ's footsteps. But overall a lot of potential. We could have the next Fringe on our hands with this one. (Folie-lex | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Debris (NBC) | 10 | If you have been missing Fringe, as much as I have, then you're in luck! This pilot script from J.H Wyman is one of the best network scripts I have read in years, combining elements from five Fringe episodes into one! It does an excellent job at introducing the characters, diving into the mythology, and even starting to carve out some back story. It wastes no time and hits the ground running. A great start to meaningful sci-fi & global espionage series! (Darthlocke | 2/22/2024) | 22-Feb-2020 |
| Ghosts (CBS) | 7 | Potential to be fun. Reminded me of a series of comedy novels I enjoy. (prpleight | 2/24/2024) | 24-Feb-2020 |
| Harlem's Kitchen (ABC) | 4 | I didn't like it. The writting was obnoxious and the characters were terribly unlikable and unrelateable, with no rootable or redeeming qualities. Having said that it's got a soapy feel to it that I believe could find an audience. (Folie-lex | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Harlem's Kitchen (ABC) | 8 | Sweet and fresh (although occasionally a little weird), and featuring a Lizzo cameo of all things! I’d be interested to see what direction this is taken in. (Karenna B | 2/22/2024) | 22-Feb-2020 |
| Home Economics (ABC) | 4 | Engaging premise, but what could've been an interesting exploration of class disparity instead is kind of just halfheartedly trying (and failing) to tap into the “blunt relatability” genre. (Karenna B | 2/22/2024) | 22-Feb-2020 |
| Kung Fu (CW) | 4 | A generic and lackluster entry with occasionally juvenile dialogue, not to mention a love triangle. Could be this one is better on screen and saved by the action sequences. (Alison D | 2/24/2024) | 24-Feb-2020 |
| La Brea (NBC) | 6 | Some clunky dialogue, a few cliche characters, and an overt attempt to be the new Lost, but I’m intrigued. (Alison D | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| My Village (ABC) | 7 | Very cute; think Beverly Goldberg as a single mom in the present day. I can see why ABC is interested, especially since "Fresh Off the Boat" has ended and left an opening for another "Quirky Overbearing Mom" sitcom. (Karenna B | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Night School (NBC) | 9 | Best new comedy script I've read yet. It made me laugh but it has plenty of heart too. It reminds me of Sunnyside with less of a political focus and possibly less over-the-top characters. (Dahne | 2/24/2024) | 24-Feb-2020 |
| Prospect (ABC) | 3 | A creative idea that is absolutely devoid of creativity in execution. I hate to compare every period-set sitcom to Galavant, but, let's be frank; it's no Galavant. (Karenna B | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Someone Out There (NBC) | 10 | My favorite script of them all — this was fun and heartfelt, and it’s a concept I’ve never seen before. The characters are very likable and the story is something I’m genuinely interested in. (Laura W | 3/29/2024) | 29-Mar-2020 |
| Superman & Lois (CW) | 7 | Established characters and setting quickly, but not sure that the show's portrayal of mental health issues will be sensitive enough. (Abby Crofton | 2/26/2024) | 26-Feb-2020 |
| The Big Sky (ABC) | 7 | Interesting and has potential. Overall I think the script spent a little too much time stalling. But it ends on an interesting note that absolutely leaves you wanting more. (Folie-lex | 3/3/2024) | 3-Mar-2020 |
| The Big Sky (ABC) | 6 | There’s something here, a creepy feel and some early surprises, but it feels more like a limited series than a 22-episode network staple. If it finds its audience, it could go places. (Alison D | 2/26/2024) | 26-Feb-2020 |
| The Big Sky (ABC) | 6 | A bit shifty toned; surprising in a weird way. Will either become a huge hit or a quick resident of the Tuesdays-at-10 deathslot. (Karenna B | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| The Big Sky (ABC) | 7 | David E. Kelly (Big Little Lies) writes a script that feels like Sharp Objects meets Longmire meets Bates Motel in this Colorado-set procedural crime anthology series. The characters are a bit off-kilter with loads of personality right from the start, which makes how things play out feel a bit unpredictable. It's a script that doesn't feel like it's meant for network TV, as it doesn't come off as episodic and has some more mature content. The plot-twist ending has me hooked! This could turn out to be great series! (Darthlocke | 2/22/2024) | 22-Feb-2020 |
| The Brides (ABC) | 4 | Not so much of a drama, but a shallow romantic melodrama that is far too predictable, with a lot of inflated exposition, and very few likable or compelling charters. The tone reminds me of Desperate Housewives, Riverdale, or You, but with a high-corporate setting, mascaraing as a Vampire genre show. I also find it too contemporary anachronistic to make it's more Gothic-leaning back story work. It might be fun for some, but I didn't find very substantive or engaging. (Darthlocke | 2/24/2024) | 24-Feb-2020 |
| The Equalizer (CBS) | 10 | This was a successful update to the original series (which I did watch). So far I'm most excited to see this one on screen. (Prpleight | 2/24/2024) | 24-Feb-2020 |
| The Lost Boys (CW) | 6 | While this version got to the vampire bits faster, people will end up thinking Buffy. Whether that hurts or helps remains to be seen. Didn't really connect with the characters here, but nostalgia will have me checking it out. (Prpleight | 2/26/2024) | 26-Feb-2020 |
| Thirtysomething(else) (ABC) | 7 | Objectively well done family drama but LGBT portrayals were cliched. (Abby Crofton | 2/26/2024) | 26-Feb-2020 |
| Untitled Jason Katims Project (Amazon) | 7 | Charming, interesting, and an important story to tell! (Karenna B | 2/22/2024) | 22-Feb-2020 |
| Walker (CW) | 7 | No surprises on the "cop show" elements. I liked Walker and his brother. Also like Walker's partner but, felt like a lot of their partnership depends on the actors chemistry. Will check it out. (Prpleight | 2/26/2024) | 26-Feb-2020 |
| Walker (CW) | 7 | Definitely the CW’s vision of Walker, Texas Ranger. The family drama is where all the potential rests. I’m not sold on the partnership between Walker and Ramirez, so the onscreen chemistry between Padalecki and Morgan needs to really sell what reads as flat and stereotypical on the page. (Alison D | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Walker (CW) | 7 | A lot better than I expected. I think it could work, especially if the show really leans into the family drama and aspects more and if the chemistry between Lindsay and Jared supports the buddy-cop side of the show. (Folie-lex | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Walker (CW) | 9 | A promising start, has the potential to be a must watch this season. (Raina | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Walker (CW) | 7 | Fun, but ultimately exactly what you’d think a CW-produced remake of WTR would look like; the Walker-Micki partnership, assuming Padalecki and Morgan have chemistry, will be why most people tune in. (Karenna B | 2/22/2024) | 22-Feb-2020 |
| Ways & Means (CBS) | 8 | Solid storylines, with characters who are well-described and I think will appeal to the audience. I think people will love Troian Bellisario's character. Modern setting and the dialogue in the story is very relevant. I will definitely watch it! (Giulia | 3/5/2024) | 5-Mar-2020 |
| Work Wife (ABC) | 6 | Was is mind blowing? No... but few ABC sitcoms pilots are. The thing with the network's half hours is that they need some time to come into their own (see American Housewife and Bless This Mess). And what I can say about Work Wife is that it certainly has the bones to be one of those typical "Cute and Heartwarming ABC sitcoms". Only time will tell if it can fully deliver. However with the cast assembled so far, and with this first script to go on, if it does get picked up I'd be happy to give it a chance to prove its stripes (Folie-lex | 4/24/2024) | 24-Apr-2020 |
| Wreckage (ABC) | 3 | The pilot lacks the tension necessary to hook an audience. Relationship drama instead of the larger mystery takes center stage. It’ll take great casting and incredible performances to make this sleepy pilot something worth watching. (Alison D | 2/23/2024) | 23-Feb-2020 |
| Wreckage (ABC) | 5 | While I expected this LOST season 5 wanna-be to be utterly bad, I find that is more average. The characters have some personality and nice dialogue exchanges with some history revealed, but they're not particularly interesting, but casting to could make this better. The Pilot's biggest problem though is that it leans heavy on love triangles and not it's mystery. It just doesn't have a deep hook. However that doesn't mean it couldn't get better.
