UVic Poker Club$230.84ChristopherDrew3uvicpoker@gmail.comLas Vegas6/28/2024World Series of Poker 2024There are currently zero options for casino run poker tournaments on Vancouver Island. As students of the University of Victoria it can be very difficult to travel for a weekend to Vegas just to be able to play in tournaments, with the expensive costs of travel and hotels, it becomes unrealistic. However, as avid studiers of the game, we value the skill it takes to play in such a high intense tournament, and we wish that there were such casino run options on the island for ourselves and other students who enjoy being able to responsibly play poker. This trip would allow 3 of the members of the UVic Poker Club to be able to travel to Las Vegas for a weekend to play in the World Series of Poker. We are all legal adults aged 21+. Any funding would go solely towards purchasing flights and hotel rooms, as per the policy. Absolutely none of the funded money would go towards gambling. The UVic Poker Club is a registered UVSS club, and although we do not associate with the UVSS if we were to run any games, we continue to promote and teach people the skilled game of poker in ways that do not include money. We are working to remove the stigma of poker and we advocate the game as a game of skill, similar to chess. It takes a lot of knowledge, expertise and intuition to be able to be a profitable player, and we hope people can see that. Anyone is welcome to come and watch our games, and this travel opportunity would be an amazing chance to learn more about the game and to interact with other people who share a similar interest. As a club we have run seminars that have educated people on how to work as a dealer, which some have used to run their own games with friends and family. By funding this trip it allows a select few students a safe and fun environment to to learn more about a game they really enjoy, without the negative bias and connotation that is often subconsciously placed on poker.Flights1000Hotel1000

Launch Canada brings together Canada's rapidly growing student rocketry community with academia, industry, and government. Their goal is to unlock the full innovative potential of students, showcase Canadian excellence, and expand international collaboration in this cutting-edge field.

This event is the only opportunity available to Canadian students to launch their rockets and test their projects in Canada due to the strict nature of testing procedures. It is an incredible opportunity to network with industry professionals, as well as students in the same industry from across the country.
This event, both the conference, festival, and launch challenge is an unprecedented opportunity for UVic students to not just compete, network, and showcase their designs, but to defend and prove the intentional design on their projects. Our UVic community will benefit immensely as being the final culmination of almost a years worth of work. A project that the team has invested significant funds and capital towards, and spent hundreds of hours working towards as a team. Nearly 50 members of the UVic community have committed to the passion and excellence of aerospace innovation, and this years particular rocket stands as a first for not just our club, but as a first for the UVic community in showcasing the passion we are capable of. It is an innovation which will set UVic engineering, specifically it's aerospace program & affiliates, apart from other institutions.2135Course Union Event (bake sale, car wash, event ticket sales)We will be hosting further fundraising opportunities through bake-sales, movie nights, get-togethers as well as grants and any other fundraising techniques we can use (in addition to sponsorships) to acquire the funding necessary to travel.

UVic Cycling$230.84EthanSwain3ethan@cornerhouse.caDuncan2024-09-22Belgian Waffle RideUVic Cycling would love to subsidize the race entry for Belgian Waffle Ride BC for 2-3 members of the club. With cycling being such a high cost of entry sport, race entry can be a barrier for students who want to compete but just don't have the financial means necessary. BWR(Belgian Waffle Ride) is a North American gravel/unroad cycling series that has races all across North America, and for the second year in a row will be hosting a race in Duncan.Subsidizing race entry to a gravel biking event for UVic Cycling will significantly enhance our club's participation and inclusivity by making events more financially accessible to a diverse range of members. This increased participation fosters a strong sense of community and team spirit, as more members experience the camaraderie and excitement of racing together. It also aids in skill development and exposure to competitive cycling, allowing members to improve their abilities and gain valuable race experience. Furthermore, this initiative can boost member satisfaction and retention, as well as attract new members who see the tangible benefits of joining our club. By showcasing our support for members, we can enhance our marketing efforts and potentially attract sponsors interested in a vibrant and active cycling community. Lastly, race participation provides opportunities for constructive feedback and post-race analysis, enabling members to learn from their experiences and continuously improve their performance.600OtherThe rest of the cost of entry will be covered by the members who are chosen to participate in the eventBelgian Waffle Ride BC Race Entry #1300Belgian Waffle Ride BC Race Entry #2300Belgian Waffle Ride BC Race Entry #3300

UVic Submarine Racing Club$230.84GraydonRourke10uvic.submarine@gmail.comGosport, England, United Kingdom2024-06-24European International Submarine Racing CompetitionThe UVic Submarine Racing Club is attending the International Submarine Racing Competition this summer. This competition is an incredible environment for challenging our members' engineering skills, as well as socializing with other university students from around the world. By participating UVic students get a chance to develop new skills, problem solve, and represent the UVic community by bringing home significant achievements. In light of the UN ocean decade plan, a key focus of this competition is sustainability, particularly with regard to ocean stewardship. This has been a guiding design philosophy in our team, and attending an international event allows us to display UVic’s support of such activities on a global scale. This also links to UVic's Strategic Plan goal of “People, Place and Planet, sʔeəɫenxʷ, S,ÁEȽA’NW̱, When things are in harmony” which speaks to climate action and sustainability. This financial support will give our members the ability to attend the International Submarine Racing Competition thus providing us a competitive learning experience while representing UVic amongst other well-established universities. By attending this competition, the students are given the opportunity to network with core companies in the marine engineering sector, allowing us to build references and contacts for any possible future career in this field. Our school name, as well as the UVSS as a sponsor, will receive recognition on an international level, alongside providing hands-on skills to students across faculties. As a multidisciplinary club, we have members from all over UVic who will all benefit from hands-on experience with fiberglass layups, engineering, 3D printing, problem solving, logistics and business-related management. Supported by the UVSS, in 2023, we attended the International Submarine Racing Competition in Washington DC and succeeded in coming in 4th overall out of 21 teams with one of the fastest submarines at competition. By attending these types of events we continue to grow the club allowing us to give back in other ways, such as getting involved in events that promote UVic Engineering as well as events to promote STEM to women, like the “Women in Engineering” where we have previously held team building activities and presented on what the Submarine Racing Club does.16700Sponsor (donations)Shipping Cost of Submarine8794.75Flights and Accomodation8925.75Competition Fee and Fuel3179.63
