5	The Flame of Unity is a candle holder shaped like the seal of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). It has been passed from one congregation of Pacific Presbytery to the next over the years, and it serves as a visible sign of the bond among our churches. Each Sunday, the Flame rests with a different congregation, and the whole Presbytery is invited to hold that church in prayer. This practice gives expression to connectionalism, the Reformed conviction that no congregation stands alone and that all belong to one body in Christ. "There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all" (Ephesians 4:4–6). As you worship, please remember the church currently holding the Flame. Give thanks for its ministry, ask God's blessing on its members and leaders, and recall that "just as the body is one and has many members… so it is with Christ" (1 Corinthians 12:12). Through this simple rotation, we are reminded that we are one family, gathered under the care of our Creator God.
