Nick DeMelloCañada CollegeProposing and developing. Exploring simultaneous teaching and also multi track courses (online and on campus tracks). Including remote participation science labs.Flexible participation options, courses where students can choose in person or online options for learning units.

This would include simultaneous teaching — students having a shared learning experience with some walking in (on campus) and some coming to the same meeting through a virtual door (online).
Creating flexible, durable options for schools and students. Allowing students a way to participate and not miss out when life happens and they can't be on campus. Or when it happens to all of us and we need to temporarily restrict or close campus.Equipment cost, admin support, and instructor buy-in may be the easy part. Training instructors on how to build effective, quality hyflex classes and manage them seems to be the bigger lift.

But, in-person students need to be within 6' of microphone. We'd like to explore the AI cameras with zoom-in capability for increased at-home student involvement/attention.

What attendance accounting method will be used for HyFlex?
10
Ventura CollegeTwo courses offered in Spring 2021, approxmately 15 additional Hyflex courses to be offered in Fall.Synchronous online and in-personaccess to some in-person learning while also allowing for social distancing. Students can come to class in person up to the class CAP while in COVID, while others "zoom" into class. If all are interested in being in-person when COVID conditions do not permit it, students will rotate in on designated days. Testing this opportunity now is a capacity building oportunity for future courses and programs, especially for students with busy work and family lives. We hope to deploy more HyFlex options in the future. In termss of equipment, we are using mobiel equipment so we do not have to designate rooms as HyFlex; instead any room can be a Hyflex room.
11
Sarah PhinneyPorterville College4-7 courses offered fall 2021. Students can "attend" either on-campus, off-campus live via Zoom, or off-campus asynchronously. We haven't formally defined hyflex. Our initial foray has been driven by individual faculty interest to meet the varied needs and comfort levels of studentsEnsuring students understand the various modalities of instruction as they see them in our schedule; Faculty support; Student support; Appropriate technology both on campus and for students; Effective pedagogy for hyflex

These are listed as f2f courses.Program continuation. Keep Respiratory therapy, nursing, and physical therapy courses running. Students are already confused about class modality with synchronous, asynch and blended online. Updating Colleague and WebAdvisor would be a big lift without dedicated IT staff.

Katie DatkoGlendale Community CollegeSmall pilot of HyFlex (possible for Fall but looking at Spring)This has not yet been defined.Expanded access points for students; flexibility; ability to provide in-person instruction safely and still reach enrollment targets with limited seat capacity(during pandemic). Workload for faculty and how this will pan out at the negotiating table for our union is huge. Due to the new mode of instruction, the pedagogical best practices for HyFlex to keep 'zoomies' engaged. The potential for this to keep teacher-centered instruction as a common pedagogical practice instead of moving towards active learning and authentic assessment. We already had a hybrid mode called HyFlex on campus (similar to SOI). Will this confuse students? Have created a PPT with an overview of some of the needs and issues. Existing resources for training.

Luis A. GonzalezOxnard CollegeFall 2021 Implementing: 28 classes so farSynchronous online and in-person; utlizing Zoom and other technology; two separate CRNs - one for the Zoom, fully online students and a separate CRN for the partially online students. Providing felxibility and access for students to register in our courses while still allowing for distancing/space in the classroomWe have a TechBar for faculty support with Hyflex. TechBar service members deliver ipads, tripods, and mics to classrooms and help with set up.

Our hyflex instructors must be certified to teach online in our district.

So far, enrollment in the on-ground portion of many of the hyflex classes has been low and those students request to be placed in the online section of the course. We do have at least one instructor with high enrollment in both hyflex and onground portions of the course.

Here is a brief summary of what ours looks like.

Del HelmsMSJCPossible implementation in SP22 or SU22Synchronous in-person with Zoom attendees. Also includes asynchronous optional attendance for students. Vaccine mandate prohibits unvaccinated students from attending in-person classes effective SP22. Flexibility in providing options for students to attend either in-person, via Zoom or asynchronously via recorded class sessions. For a true HyFlex experience instructors will need to have the equivalent of a fully, asynchronous online course to accompany the live in-class and Zoom class meetings. Webinar explaining HyFlex will be offered during SP22 convocation as well as a fully developed HyFlex PD course focusing upon Synchronous teaching (adapted @ONE course) as well as expansion of adapted @ONE course to include strategies for HyFlex teaching. A classroom dedicated to HyFlex has been outfitted with manually controlled PTZ camera with presets, ceiling mics, projection units and confidence screen will be used throughout the early part of SP22 to provide in-person PD with the intent of offering HyFlex courses during the late start, eight week session in late SP22.

Donna Greene College of the DesertSpring 22 pilotSynchronous in-person with live stream via Zoom. Also includes asynchonous option. Class sessions will be recorded. Students can move between modalities as they wish. Increase enrollment, flexibility for students, increase student retention and success. We brought Dr. Beatty to our campus for a one week training session with interested faculty. As part of the contract, we keep the course shell and can run additional training with it. Created a cohort of faculty who will help to train future instructors. All hyflex instructors must be DE certified and complete the one week training. We have hired and trained student workers to help run the Zoom sessions and to fix the captions for the recordings after the class is complete. As of spring 22, we have implemented a pilot program. We have two Hyflex Coordinators who are working with faculty, staff, and student workers. We have adapted Dr. Beatty's course and are offering it this spring to 29 faculty who will be badged when complete. https://edtechbooks.org/hyflex

Kim MartinCopper Mountain Collegeno implementation yet. Curriculum & Senate endorsed "no to adding HyFlex as an additional DE modality at this time" until we can research it more and get a team together to look at possibly adopting it in the future. Currently, all classrooms for F2F courses have OWL cameras to use when students with COVID-related issues cannot attend class. Instructors can turn it on when students let them know they will be out. Some instructors record their F2F lectures and put them in Canvas for students to watch later. We do not call it HyFlex since it's not true HyFlex. We do not wish to confuse students who may know true HyFlex and expect to see that.At this time, Curriculum & Senate feel that asking faculty to train in a whole new modality is asking too much from the already over-worked among us. At this time, we want to perfect and improve upon the DE Modalities we currently have in place. We have created an infographic that defines each DE modality and we will put it in the schedule and on the website so everyone will be on the same page and know exactly what type of DE modalities we offer. What do the HyFlex task forces look like? Who is on the task forces? How will this be bargained? How much training is involved? What data is there to show if students do better in HyFlex vs other DE Modalities? Where are good training opportunities to train in the true HyFlex modality? How much does training cost? How do colleges ensure that all HyFlex courses are being taught correctly? How to successfully run a pilot (who to train, time consideration, etc.)

Scott VigallonLas Positas CollegeWe contracted with Dr. Brian Beatty to train 20 faculty in late Fall 2021. Most of those instructors are piloting HyFlex classes this semester (Spring 2022). Based on Dr. Beatty's materials, we'll be training more faculty later this semester, so we will be offering many HyFlex classes in Fall 2022. Faculty are being compensated for training."A HyFlex (Hybrid Flexible) course allows students the choice of attending class on campus or online. Online modalities may include synchronous online, and/or asynchronous online instruction." Definition by LPC Distance Education Committee, January 28, 2022.
Increased flexibility for students, increased success, increase enrollments, etc. We're currently piloting HyFlex with Owls, but our Tech Dpt is purchasing other equipment for faculty to test and give feedback....We're giving faculty the choice of teaching on campus and just synchronously online, on campus and just asynchronously online, or in all three modes...I'm creating a course template that faculty can use in Canvas. It's taking a long time :)

Matthew MooreVentura CollegeCourses are offered in the format. Training is provided on how to use the technology. We could benefit from classroom strategies that define ways to increase engagement. HyFlex (hybrid-flexible) classes are defined as classes that allow each student to choose whether they wish to attend class online or in person . . . classes are "live-streamed" for students to access remotely. Students can choose their preferred method of learning. Increase enrollment in specialty classes (hard to fill courses), works well in entry level courses too, hard to convert classes, needs a teacher who can teach in the platform (not for all)Campus upgraded 8 rooms at VC and its east campus with capabilities. Purchase 10 K worth of AI cameras, tripods, and lapel microphones. Available for check out or set up in any classroom. Purchase during pandemic by Dean Kumpf.

Jim JuliusMiraCosta CollegePiloted in 21-22, continued expansion since then. Built out 17 classrooms for HyFlex in summer 2023. Noncredit is an especially enthusiastic adopter and it's being offered across a number of disciplines in credit as well.synchronous online (Zoom) and in-person, students choose how to attend for each class session. Flexibility for students in accessing classes. Providing a middle ground between either/or in-person or online. MiraCosta's Academic Senate created a document with recommendations for faculty, departments, and the college when implementing HyFlex.

Antoniette AizonMadera Community CollegeMCC has always have a variation of this modality. We called this 2-Way Live. We have a live class at MCC and using technology it gets remoted to another site. Since the pandemic and an update in technology, we have now modified the existing DE addendum to include Face-to-Face and Online Synchronous using Zoom. We currently have 3 different departments that use this modality regularly (History, Human Services, and Psychology). Students will enroll in the face-to-face section or enroll in the live synchronous section. These two sections are then crosslisted and count as 1 course. 2-way Live (Location Code: MCC with Comments of the 2-way live): online synchronous meeting at multiple locations using technology to facilitate the course at various locations including scheduled on-campus face to face meetings as identified in the schedule. (Entered into the Special Comments section as “2-Way Live Interactive”; with schedule meeting day(s) and time(s) identified in the schedule; Important Course notes “This course is offered remotely at multiple locations. Students will interact live on-site in Distance Learning classroom with the instructor via Video and audio connections”).Provide students with a flexible schedule should they need to take the course but cannot make it to campus. Or they do not want to take an online asynchronous course. While the primary purposes is to provide access to education and reduce barriers due to schedule and / or location. The byproduct has shown increased enrollment. We have 3 different classroom set up depending on how the course is faciliated. Some rooms have OWLs only; some have a Logi cameras at the back of the room; and 3 of the classrooms have multiple cameras (front of the class and back of the class with an OWL if requested), these rooms are also equip with 3 television monitors, 2 in the front and 1 in the back. This setup can me created so that faculty and students in the classroom can see the live Zoom class participating in the chat. On a fun note, I call the students who are in my face-to-face class Roomies and those who are attending live via Zoom are called Zoomies. Participation and attendance are done very differently to ensure that those who are in the live Zoom session are actively engaging and paying attention. Also, there is no requirement for the students to have their cameras on or they have to engage by using their mics. Engagements are either through the Chat or if they want to unmute and share outloud.
