Leptin and ghrelin are two hormones that have been recognized to have a major influence on energy balance. Leptin is made by adipose tissue that helps to regulate energy balance by inhibiting hunger (suppressing food intake), ghrelin on the other hand is a fast-acting hormone, seemingly playing a role in meal initiation. Both hormones act on receptors in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus to regulate appetite to achieve energy homeostasis.

The presentation is about the classical and special theory of relativity. The
concept of inertia frame of reference is defined and the principle of classical
theory of relativity is described. By applying classical relativity to the
speed of light, Maxwell’s equations do not satisfied in all inertial frame of
reference since the speed of light is constant in Maxwell’s equations, so Maxwell’s
theory is inconsistent with the Newton’s law of invariant. Einstein’s
postulates of the special theory of relativity is explained, the theory of time
dilation as a consequence of Einstein’s postulates and Lorentz velocity
transformation has been explained.

D-alanine metabolism and extra evidence for cell wall recycling in Bacillus subtilis

D-alanine is a stereoisomer of L-alanine and it plays a crucial role in bacterial cell wall biosynthesis through taking part in peptidoglycan cross-links. D-alanine is also a component of teichoic acids in the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria. Bacillus subtilis synthesises D-alanine from L-alanine by the main alanine racemase (AlrA). The growth of D-alanine auxotroph (alrA) strain requires exogenous D-alanine in rich media but does not need D-alanine supplement in minimal media, for unclear reason. After cell wall assembly, the uncross-linked D-alanine residues are usually trimmed by carboxypeptidases (DacA and LdcB) and the D-alanine esters of teichoic acids are spontaneously released. The fate of released cell wall material is well understood in Gram-negative bacteria (e.g E coli). However, cell wall recycling has been paid little attention and only a putative muropeptide recycling has been reported in B. subtilis and Clostridium acetobutylicum so far. This study set out to investigate D-alanine metabolic pathway and D-alanine recycling in B. subtilis, using genetic, biochemical and bioinformatics approaches. Through these analyses, a D-alanine transporter (DatA, formerly YtnA) was identified and characterized. The roles of DatA, DacA and LdcB in recycling of cell wall derived D-alanine have experimentally been confirmed. We also found that D-alanine aminotransferase (Dat) can act to synthesis D-alanine under certain conditions.

The characterization and classification of karst springs is difficult due to non-homogeneity in the hydrodynamic properties and the fact that hydrochemical processes are governing karstification. This work characterizes the karst springs (Makook karst system, Kurdistan Region, Iraq) by combining the hydrodynamic and hydrogeochemical properties of karst waters. The ratio of minimum to maximum discharges was correlated to the hydrogeochemical parameters of karst waters. Based on this correlation a karst index (KI) is calculated and a classification proposed. According to this KI, karst springs of the area are categorized into four classes, with the lowest value of KI referring to the lowest degree of karstification, and the highest value for the most developed karst. The proposed KI may help for better classification of karst systems as well as contribute to modeling and assessment of water resources management.

In mammals, adult neurogenesis in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the
lateral ventricle and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus
produces neurons contribute to learning and memory functions. However,
more recent evidence suggests that neurogenesis may also happen in other
regions of the brain such as striatum, spinal cord, and hypothalamus. It is important to determine if neurogenesis
also occurs in non-neurogenic regions of the adult brain such as cerebellum. This would be of importance for potential future therapeutic
applications for brain repair, and also to help understand the fundamental
function of the different regions of the adult brain.

Karez; an abandoned and endangered water source in Sulaimani, Kurdistan Region, Iraq

Hundreds man-made subterranean aqueducts known as Karez or Qanat have been developed throughout the history of Sulaimani. It is an insight into the current status of Sulaimni Karezes and their deteriorating conditions regarding structure and water quality due to unsustainable urbanization and improper licensing for land use in the city. Geological aspects with particular emphasis on hydrogeological conditions that made their construction and their long-term use possible have been examined.Terminology, Function, and distribution of all infiltration Karezes have been recorded and previously drawn sketches reviewed. Water samples from Karezes outlets analyzed for major, minor and trace elements and the results showed that most of the Karezes polluted and not suitable for human consumption.

This study characterizes the geochemistry of Sr-isotopes in terms of hydrogeological applications. The aim of the work is to better understand water-rock interaction, sources of elements, correlation of flow rate and the geochemistry of carbonate aquifers, Furthermore, the degree of karstification and the length of flow path were assessed.

Peptidoglycan is the stress-bearing structure in the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria (e.g B. subtilis). The peptidoglycan metabolic processes are synthesis, modification, turnover and recycling. These processes have generally been well investigated in Gram-negative model bacterium, E. coli. However, apart from peptidoglycan synthesis other metabolic processes are less understood in B. subtilis. Cell wall growth was initially studied in B. subtilis at population level, using radioactive labelling isotopes (3H and 14C GlcNAc and D-glutamate). The radioactive studies have consistently showed the pattern of peptidoglycan synthesis and turnover in models, suggesting that the new peptidoglycan layers are incorporated into the inner most layers by PBPs, meanwhile the stretched old peptidoglycan layers are degraded at the cell surface by hydrolases (Pooley, 1976a; Pooley, 1976b; Koch and Doyle, 1985a). Few attempts were previously made to visualise the growth of B. subtilis cell wall, using autoradiography and electron and fluorescent microscopies (Mobley et al., 1984; Merad et al., 1989). These studies demonstrated that the insertion of new cell wall material and the degradation of old cell wall occur uniformly along the cell cylinder, but the cell poles are metabolically less active. Moreover, the recent developments in peptidoglycan labelling fluorescent probes have offered a great progress in bacterial cell wall studies. The fluorescent microscopic studies increasingly suggested that the synthesis of new peptidoglycan occurs at cell division site and in a helical pattern around the cylindrical part of the cell (Daniel and Errington, 2003; Tiyanont et al., 2006; Kuru et al., 2012). A sophisticated coordination between peptidoglycan synthesis and turnover is crucial for cell wall strength, cell shape maintenance and cell elongation (Popham, 2013). The coordination of peptidoglycan synthesis and turnover has already been proposed in E. coli (three-for-one growth model) (Holtje, 1998; Vollmer and Holtje, 2001). However, the mechanistic details of peptidoglycan assembly. Here, radioactive D-alanine and fluorescent D-amino acids were used to understand the mechanistic details of cell wall assembly (coordination between cell wall synthesis and turnover) in B. subtilis.

Characterization of the naturally fused flavodoxin reductase and glutamine synthetanse in Gordonia sp. KTR9, an RDX-degrading bacterium

The xenobiotic hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) is a toxic explosive compound which was first introduced into the environment during the Second World War. The use of RDX on military lands, coupled with is recalcitrant to biodegradation, has resulted in the build-up of significant levels of pollution. Bacterial species have been isolated with the ability to degrade RDX, using it as a sole source of nitrogen. The results indicate a single evolutionary origin of xplA and xplB as part of a genomic island which has been distributed around the world via horizontal gene transfer. In Gordonia sp. KTR9 and Microbacterium sp. MA1 single base pair mutations were found to be responsible for XplB inactivation, explaining the differences in RDX-degrading ability.

Nowadays weather and climate change is an international issue. there is not much research about the climate of Sulaimani city so then this project aims to assess the weather condition of the Sulaimani city bases on the data available in some decades.

In this seminar, I will give an overview about the Fulbright program and what do you need to expect from this program. The Aim of this seminar is to motivate our faculties to apply to this program.

This silent problem has not been addressed well to public. Through this seminar I am going to provide enough knowledge about antibiotics and antibiotic resistance to people. Also, the plan of World Health Organisations for global tackling of antibiotic resistance will be clarified.
