JohnCobbDr. John Cobb is an international performer and recording artist known for his broad interpretive range and technical command. The New York Times has praised his “solid technique, bronze tone and flexibility of interpretive style.” The Chicago Daily News commented, “the vibrations that filled the hall were less those of the piano than those of an exquisite musical mind.” Dr. Cobb has been presented by Artists International on their Distinguished Artists series in New York City and has made recordings of 20th Century as well as early piano music on original instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Dr. Cobb has performed internationally some of the most important works of contemporary music and has worked directly with many of the most influential composers of our era, such as Aaron Copland and Lukas Foss. While completing a Doctor of Music degree at Northwestern University, Dr. Cobb held a fellowship at the University of Chicago, where he pursued doctoral studies in musicology and held the position of staff pianist with Ralph Shapey’s Contemporary Chamber Players. He continues to perform a broad repertoire of chamber music and has collaborated with renowned artists such as Joel Smirnoff, former first violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet and most recently with Jason Posnock, concertmaster of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. Among Dr. Cobb’s orchestral appearances is a performance of the Samuel Barber Piano Concerto with the Asheville Symphony. As a frequent performer on the Piano Forte concert series at the Asheville Art Museum, Dr. Cobb celebrated Franz Liszt’s bicentennial with an all-Liszt solo program during the summer of 2011. Dr. Cobb is a direct musical descendant of Franz Liszt through his teacher, pianist Claudio Arrau, whose teacher was a pupil of Liszt. He presents master classes on piano technique and literature, and frequently serves as an adjudicator for competitions and music festivals. John PaulMcDonaldJohn Paul retired from the faculty of UNCA in 2005 after having taught French and Humanities courses there for two decades. His degrees are in French: B.A. from Manhattan College, M.A. from Brown University, and Ph.D. from the University of Paris. Prior to his teaching at UNCA, he taught at prep schools and colleges in New England and in the Philadelphia area. In a previous incarnation (i.e., as a boy) he took piano lessons for three years, then drifted away. He supposes that taking lessons now in retirement (from AAPF member John Cobb) is a test of belief in reincarnation or simply a triumph of hope over experience.profmcd@gmail.comP.O. RobertRodwellRodwell, Robert received his Masters in Materials Engineering from the University of Florida in 1973 and, before retiring to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1998, had a very eclectic career, as metallurgist with Texas Instruments, an operations officer with a small commercial bank, but primarily as a research metallurgist and systems programmer/analyst with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT. Currently he manages his wife Judy’s piano studio business. Offsetting a heavily-oriented left-brain career, music has always been Robert’s real love, particularly vocal and keyboard. He has performed in various solo, ensemble, and choral venues in New England and the Southeast, singing everything from oratorio to jazz, lieder, and art song. RichardShulmanKeyboardist and composer Richard Shulman creates music intended to be a positive influence for himself, audiences and society. -- Richard has recorded 23 of his own albums as well as more than two dozen other recordings for which he has provided compositions, performances and/or musical production. Trained in the classical and jazz fields, he has developed a heartfelt language in these genres while focussing a significant amount of his output on music for meditation, healing and inspiration. He currently divides his concert schedule between performances of his meditation music and his original jazz as personified by the Richard Shulman Trio. -- Shulman has performed at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Art Park, the United Nations, the Kool Jazz Festival, The Amenia Peace Festival and a wide variety of other venues throughout North America and in Europe. -- As a composer, Shulman has created over sixty five pieces for jazz quartet as well as songs and pieces for chamber ensembles, choir, and symphony orchestra. In 1986 and 1987 he composed music for orchestra and jazz quartet during residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. From 1986 through 1995, Shulman was the principal composer for “Theatre of the Heart,” a cooperative of dancers, singers, and musicians dedicated to fostering community and the environment. Commissions include a piece for the Amherst Saxophone Quartet, and “May Peace Prevail on Earth” for singers, symphony orchestra, three choirs, and jazz quartet, created for the World Peace Prayer Society. In addition, he has created hundreds of ‘Musical Soul Portrait‘ recordings for individuals, couples, and groups. -- Born and raised in Niagara Falls, New York, he began piano lessons at age seven. As a teenager Richard played organ at various churches, was the music counselor at a summer camp in Canada, and joined a rock band with future jazz recording artists Thom Rotella and Bobby Previte. Shulman graduated from the University of Rochester with a double-major Bachelor’s degree in music (piano performance) and psychology while continuing to perform with Previte in the jazz-fusion band Thermopylae. -- While at Rochester, Shulman also attended the prestigious Eastman School of Music and studied jazz improvisation with Chuck Mangione and Marian McPartland, orchestration with Donald Hunsberger and arranging with the legendary Rayburn Wright. Shulman continued his studies in jazz with Frank Foster, composition with William Kothe and Lejaren Hiller, and piano with Yvar Mikashoff while getting his Masters Degree in musical composition at the State University of New York at Buffalo. During those years he played onstage in concert with such jazz stalwarts as Thad Jones, Eddie Gomez, Pepper Adams, Jerry Dodgion, Freddie Hubbard and Al Harewood, and recorded his first jazz album, Wonder. -- Local musicians he played with in Buffalo included Bilal Abdullah, Sabu Adeyola, Abdul Rachmann Kadir, Charlie Fadale, Rick Fadale, Greg Millar, Jim Kurzdorfer, James Clark, Peter Piccirilli, Joel Perry, Dan Mink, Daryl Washington, Junnieh Booth, Gus Broncato, Ron Mendola, Mike Migliore, Gerry Eastman, Lenny Reforgiato, Dave Alderson, and Richard Tabnick. -- After moving to New York City, Shulman played in the studio as a session musician with the great jazz rhythm section of Ron Carter and Grady Tate; performed with groups such as The Richard Reiter Swing Band, Providence and Crossing Point; and recorded and performed with the acts Mr. Spats (Steve Evans, June Bisantz, Steve Swallow and Bob Moses) and Bobby Previte (Lenny Pickett, Tom Varner & Dave Hofstra). The Richard Shulman Group, a jazz quartet, played regularly in the New York area and recorded the albums A Simple Gift and Open Spaces, and Richard also released the solo jazz piano album Solo Flight. -- Members of the Richard Shulman Group in NYC included, saxophone players Tim Moran, Dave Binney, and Marty Fogel, Bassists Dean Johnson, Greg Cohen, Lindsey Horner, Paul Avgerinos, Kevin McCarthy and Sue Williams, and drummers Bobby Previte, Brian Doherty and John Clay. -- In New York City, he found himself on a spiritual search which lead him to meditation classes. While continuing his jazz performances, Shulman began playing for the meditation and healing groups which he attended. His first recording incorporating some of this meditative style was the extemporaneous solo piano album, World Peace, recorded on the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. This album had been suggested by a healer who also showed him that he could create music for individuals for healing and alignment. These recordings became known as “Musical Soul Portraits” and have been a feature of Shulman’s solo concerts ever since. This work led him into creating more albums for healing and meditation, including A Higher Dimension, Light Music, Music for Magnified Healing, First Rites and Sacred Music for Healing Hands Volumes 1 & 2. -- While in NYC Shulman played in many venues including, Greene St., The Angry Squire, 55 Grand, The Village Gate, Visiones, West Boondock, The Bitter End, Hisae’s, Cousins(Brooklyn), Arthur’s (Hoboken). with many additional musicians, including Luther Rix, Marc Sganga, Charlie DesCarfino, Bill Evans (sax), Vinnie Bianchi, Walter Moorman, Drori Mondlak, David Gross, Jack Dryden, Martin Aubert, Lynn Seaton, Dore DiQuatro, Rob Bulkley, Jeff Van Nostrand, Warren Fioretti, Brad Gregory and the Vegas East Big Band, Michael Gaeta, Aaron Heick, Jack Bashkow, Arthur Kell, Mikko Mikkola, Ratzo Harris, and Ted Moore. -- Singers he played for included Maxine Brown, Rosemary Loar, Miriam Raiken, Pat Tortoricci, Elizabeth Hepburn, Pat Arena, Vickie Obermeyer, and Shanti & Valli Rajah. -- Shulman’s first two album releases with national marketing were Light from Assisi and Transformation at Assisi, inspired by spiritual pilgrimages to the town of Assisi in Italy where St. Francis lived. Richard then began groundwork for the 2002 project Camelot Reawakened: A Vision Fulfilled with a pair of recordings — Ascension Harmonics and the partially-orchestral Keeper of the Holy Grail — with “spiritual attunements” by Samuel Welsh. “Our research for ‘Holy Grail’ led me to the larger picture of Camelot,” says Shulman, who also took a trip to Glastonbury, England in 1995 to study the area. “I feel that the energies of Camelot still reside in places like the Abbey there and the Michael Tor, the sacred hill which is pictured on the cover of Camelot Reawakened.” -- From 1996 through 2005 Richard focussed on the creation of the CD and DVD/video Camelot Reawakened: A Vision Fulfilled. Inspired by an inner vision, this project follows the manifestation of “Dreams of the Heart” in music and words. The CD and DVD feature a 35- piece orchestra consisting of members of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, a choir, soloists, and Shulman at the piano. The concert and recording session were conducted by Robert Hart Baker. -- Related albums recorded during this time include First Rites and Music to Walk the Labyrinth. The Camelot Reawakened CD won a 2003 Coalition of Visionary Resources (COVR) Visionary Award, and the DVD was a finalist in the 2006 awards. The DVD has also won an Award of Excellence and an honorable mention in the 2007 Accolade Competition. -- In 2003, RichHeart Music released Shulman’s duo album with cellist Adriana Contino, who for several years was the principal soloist for the Stuttgart, (Germany) Chamber Orchestra. New Beginnings explores the delicate balance between inner and outer listening in free flowing improvisations as well as upbeat and lyrical compositions. Shulman’s solo piano CD, Music of Peace was released in June, 2006 and is music dedicated to and expressing inner peace. His 2008 release, 11:11 Piano Meditations for Awakening, is a series of tranquil improvisations exploring “Wake up calls from Spirit.” The 11:11 CD won a 2009 Coalition of Visionary Resources (COVR) Visionary Award for best CD in the meditational/healing music category. 2009 brought the release of Sky Jazz, Shulman’s first Jazz CD in many years, as well as the re-release on CD of “A Higher Dimension,” a meditative solo piano album expressing qualities of spiritual realms. -- In 2007, a concert with bassist Mike Holstein and drummer Sonny Thornton gave Shulman the realization that this trio had the potential to be a vehicle for original trio music. The Richard Shulman Trio aka Earth & Sky released Sky Jazz in 2009, and have continued to work together since then. A Youtube playlist of the trio is available here. -- After the completion of the Camelot Reawakened CD in 2002 and the DVD video in 2005, a friend sugguested a musical based on the Camelot Reawakened project. “A Dream of Camelot” is a theatrical musical intended to portray the changing of deeply rooted patterns in the Archetype of Camelot for the sake of fulfilling dreams of the heart for individuals, society, and the planet. Each song in “A Dream of Camelot” is an expression of consciousness in a process of maturing awareness. “A Dream of Camelot” has taken six years of writing and development to become the transformational catalyst it now is for casts and audiences alike. -- 2009 brought the first reading of the musical at the UR Light Center in Black Mountain, NC. The first full production, directed by Jerry Crouch, was presented at the Asheville NC Masonic Temple, March 11, 12, & 13, 2011 and the musical returned to the Masonic Temple March 29, 30, 31, and April 1, 2012, directed by Rock Eblen. More info about the musical “A Dream of Camelot” is available here. -- In 2013, Shulman returned to and enhanced his own musical stream of healing and Divine Alignment with the production of a new album entitled “Bliss of Being.” Although he has created eight albums of music for healing previously, these were all solo recordings, and “Bliss of Being” is his first ensemble recording with an intent of music for healing and divine connection. Shulman plays mostly piano on “The Bliss of Being” and a little synthesizer, and is joined by Adriana Contino – cello, Dielle Ciesco – vocals, Kate Steinbeck – flutes, and Bob Hinkle – crystal bowls to form The Pure Heart Ensemble. Bliss of Being was nominated for a Zone Music Reporter award in the “Best New Artist” category, tracked at #11 for two months on the ZMR chart and has been #1 on Music Direct’s “Soundscapes” twice and in their top 20 for over a year. -- Since 1998 Shulman has been an active participant in the lively Asheville NC music scene, playing at many venues including the Isis Restaurant and Music Hall, Lex 18 Restaurant and Moonshine Bar, the Biltmore Estate, White Horse Black Mountain, the Classic Wine Seller the Waynesville Arts Council, the Hendersonville Arts Council, Burntshirt Vineyards, and the Grove Park Inn. He works with two big bands on a regular basis, the Asheville Jazz Orchestra and Russ Wilson’s Nouveau Passe Jazz Orchestra and has performed with many bands and musicians regionally including the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Michael Gamble’s Rhythm Serenaders, bassists Eliot Wadopian, Zack Page, Daniel Iannucchi Bill Fauti, James Simmons, Sandy Boone and Shannon Hoover, drummers Rick Dilling, Justin Watt, Byron Hedgepeth, Michael W. Davis, Dave & Jeff Rudolph, trumpet players Rich Willey, Justin Ray (Michael Buble), Don Eisaman (Don Edwards), Woody Dotson, Andy Sorenson, Patrick Lopez, Ben Hovey, John Entzi, Charles Parker, sax players Jacob Rodriguez (Michael Buble), Todd Wright, Jim Anthony, Ray Spires, Joel Helfand, and Frank Southecorvo, trombonists Rick Simmerly (assoc.prof. Milligan College TN), Walton Davis, Dave Wilken, Bob Gregory and Alan Greene, guitartists Hank Bones, Chris Morgan, and Mark Guest, and vibraphonists, Paul Babley, and Jason DeCristofaro. Singers he has worked with include Timothy O’Keefe (Remembering Frank Sinatra), Jesse Earl Junior (from NYC), Heather Masterton, Wendy Jones, Paula Hanke, Sherman Hoover, Peggy Ratusz, and Amy Rae Stupka. -- Most recently Shulman has played “warm up” sets for Grammy winning saxophonist and composer Paul Winter as Part of UNC-Asheville’s “Ecomusicology” conference and for National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow, Sheila Kay Adams as part of the concert “Appalachian Holiday” with National Hammered Dulcimer 2003 Champion, Joshua Messick. -- Shulman currently is an adjunct instructor of jazz piano at the University of North Carolina – Asheville and also performs regionally at various churches, having held positions at the Center for Spiritual Living–Asheville and Jubilee! Community Church. He will be interim music director at Unity Center of Mills River starting in February 2015. -- Projects for 2015 include “Buried Diamond,” a new jazz trio album, “Snow Days,” a holiday album, “Indigo Fantasy,” a large scale piece for studio orchestra commisioned by Russ Wilson, “A Carolina Christmas,” a charity production to benefit hunger and help homeless veterans in Western North Carolina, and the revision of a children’s musical written in 1990. -- Richard Shulman currently lives in Asheville, NC and performs and records regionally and internationally. -- Richard Shulman – Spiritual Development and Integration -- Richard Shulman’s spiritual journey has been lifelong and has led him to seek the Divine in everything and everyone he meets. Studies in music and spirituality with some extraordinary teachers, interactions with others and God’s Grace have opened a gradual maturation of Divine connection and expression. -- What is love, really? -- In June of 1983 this question brought Shulman to a class on meditation taught by Hilda Charlton. Hilda was a master of bringing students to God and dedication to Spiritual Life by meeting them right where they were and opening doorways of consciousness appropriate to each student, working through archetypes of multiple spiritual and religious traditions. For Richard, Hilda was also a divine Mother, who helped him spiritually rebirth himself into new awareness and realities. -- By the time Richard met Hilda he had studied music for twenty five years, had been a professional musician for twelve years with a masters in composition, and he was working as a jazz pianist in NYC. His musical “vehicle” was fairly developed and as he experienced new spiritual realms, a musical language to express their subtle landscapes emerged in performances and recordings over the next four and a half years until Hilda’s passing in 1988. -- This process was accompanied by realizations and experiences which helped him know himself in a much deeper way. At the same time as he learned to love and accept wounded parts of himself he recognized the Grace that was propelling him forward, healing him, loving him and teaching him. -- This Grace took many forms, sometimes revealing Itself in a prayer of the Jewish tradition he was brought up in, showing the Life behind life. It would sometimes take the form of Jesus and Mary, or beings revered in other religions. He came to realize the essential sameness of the truth behind every major religion and the kaleidoscopic abundance of perspectives towards which each religion and spiritual tradition contributes. He also recognized the insanity that exists in the superficial aspects of the religions where judgement obscures the truth of our inner purity. -- The recognition of inner purity in all was to lead to musical expression as Richard further immersed himself in spiritual studies with two of Hilda’s students, David Pomerantz and Ron Young. -- Attending and playing music for David’s meditation classes and workshops helped him to become more present in subtle realms, to recognize spiritual opportunity and to hold Divine Presence in the midst of life. -- Richard’s work with healer, creative visionary and spiritual guide Ron Young has been multifaceted, sometimes as a student sometimes as a collaborator, with much benefit arising from from suggestions Ron has made which have opened up amazing experiences and numerous musical/spiritual projects. -- By 1986 Shulman was ready to translate recognition of inner purity in another person to music through Ron’s help and guidance. This musical / Spiritual work became known as Musical Soul Portraits and has been a continuous theme in Richard’s music for individuals and groups. -- In 1988 Shulman participated in a trip to Assisi, Italy led by Ron which facilitated Richard’s deep recognition of and connection with St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi. This accelerated Shulman’s work with meditative and healing music in performances and recordings. -- A Musical Soul Portrait session in 1996 initiated a project working with the energies of Camelot to create a musical map of dreams coming true, including healing and empowerment. This process resulted in a CD, a video and eventually a theatrical musical developed between 2006 and 2012. -- Since that time Shulman has continued to integrate Spirituality and Music (both Jazz and Meditative) and to aim to maintain a Spiritual Life in the midst of everyday living, in relationship, through teaching, performance, recording, writing, business and through sharing what he knows.richheartmusic@frontier.com828-658-9604https://RichHeartMusic.comWeavervilleIntermediate, Advanced, College, AdultsClassical, JazzTheory, CompositionMusical Soul Portraits, Jazz performances, composing, arranging & recording419 Creekside Drive Asheville, NC 28804

Debra (Debbie)LambertMs. Debbie as my students refer to me, is a bubbly, most always energetic teacher who loves to see her students arrive for their weekly lesson. My teaching style is very global. I don't keep the same pattern weekly so my students tend to stay engaged. I have been a pianist since age fifteen starting out in my small community church. Later I played piano for a choral group, played organ for another church and settled as Music Director for twenty-two years at a local Southern Baptist Church. My accomplishments were organizing and directing special presentations other than our normal Cantatas. Establishing an old-fashioned Sunday sing and many other activities within the community. Currently, I teach piano and volunteer where I am needed. I hold an Associate Degree in Applied Science - Business Administration from Wilkes Community College, Wilkesboro, NC and I also hold Professional Certificates from Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts.DebbieJohnsonLambert@gmail.com336-466-4398www.djscreativeartscenter.comAll of Wilkes CountyBeginner, Intermediate, Young Children, Elementary, Middle/High School, AdultsClassical, Popular, ReligiousTheory, Composition, Piano/Keyboard179 Raven Circle, Wilkesboro, NC 28697
