12 | How Do We Know They are Learning | Many students arrive at Secondary School with a Primary School reading age. Teachers and students often find ways to avoid setting or undertaking reading tasks. Often students who in Year 9 score a Curriculum Level 3 in reading, leave four years later with the same grade. Finding ways to help teachers focus on teaching reading skills while completing the curriculum goals of a department is not easy. Asking teachers to plan and use the meta-language of reading instruction is a way to address the learning need of our students. More importantly, giving students quality feedback for a reading task, in the Secondary Classroom, means students are aware of their strengths and weaknesses. With regular feedback students very quickly come to understand their own learning needs and ask what they need to do to achieve a higher grade. Those attending this workshop should bring a class text.
