KvanttinovaKvanttinova is an industry-driven piloting and development facility for microelectronics and quantum technology. The unique piloting environment focuses on pre-commercial development and targets to offer a pilot line for small-volume manufacturing and scale-up. Kvanttinova contains the latest equipment for shared use as well as company-specific labs, cleanrooms and office areas.

Kvanttinova strengthens Finland's position as one of Europe's most important microelectronics and quantum technology hubs. The European Union and the United States Chip Acts aim to decrease dependencies on global value chains originating elsewhere. The European Chips Act seeks to double the European market share to 20% by 2030. This requires both new deep technology investments and increased manufacturing capacity. Kvanttinova contributes to the European technological leadership on chips. Kvanttinova serves these specialised microelectronics processes in a highly integrated fashion.

Currently, most of the world's microchips are manufactured using CMOS technology. However, Finland is a pioneer in specialised microelectronics processes such as integrated photonics, MEMS sensors, radio frequency communications, silicon-based detectors and quantum technology. The added value of these technologies comes from entirely new functionalities that cannot be implemented with CMOS technology. 

The purpose of Kvanttinova is to increase the sector's RDI activities in Finland, boost product and service exports, and attract new international experts, companies and investments.

Biodesign FinlandInnovating Medical Technologies in Interdisclipinary Teams

In Biodesign, systematically identified medical needs are solved by inventing and implementing new biomedical technologies.

Developed at Stanford University, Biodesign aims at improved medical care by providing a novel entrepreneurial program to selected interdisciplinary teams and by creating new businesses. After initial training,the team is immersed in a clinic for a month to observe its processes. The team’s sole task during immersion is to identify 100–200 needs that have not been optimally met. After immersion, the team will brainstorm and analyze these needs in order to determine the most important and solvable ones. Eventually, one need will be chosen and a solution developed for clinical use and commercialization.

OtananoOperated by Aalto University and VTT, OtaNano is comprised of the Low Temperature Laboratory, Micronova and the Nanomicroscopy Center. The OtaNano research infrastructure houses comprehensive micro- and nanofabrication facilities in clean-room environments, high-resolution imaging and characterization equipment, and state-of-the-art experimental facilities, including ultra-low temperature possibilities.

OtaNano is a top-level learning environment for young researchers and an international centre for world-class scientific research. The facilities are important for scientists as well as for high-tech companies. OtaNano is a national platform for developing innovative enabling technologies and appling them to practical nano-, micro-, and quantum systems.

The OtaNano research infrastructure can be used by researchers, students and companies. All of its premises are conveniently located within walking distance from each other on the Otaniemi campus.
