6 | Google released a developer preview version of Android O at developer.android.com. Android O will clamp down on background processes, particularly, implicit broadcasts, background services, and location updates, in an effort to improve battery life. In addition apps can now group notifications into categories called channels. Notifications will also get new visuals and grouping as well as a snooze option. There are also improvements to Bluetooth sound, , adaptive icons designs, picture-in-picture for video, multi-display support, keyboard navigation, and an autofill api for password managers. Android O works on the Nexus 5X, 6P and Player, the Pixel, Pixel XL and Pixel C. Google I/O is coming May 17-19. | |||||
7 | Starting Tuesday, three high-profile redditors will test the ability to make posts directly on their profile pages and follow other user’s profile pages to see their new posts. Previously you could only post to communities which would then show up on your profile. When you’re logged in, posts from profiles you follow will show up on your front page. You can comment on other’s profile posts which are administrated by the profile owner and anyone they authorize. | |||||
8 | Microsoft finished development on a custom built of Windows 10 for China, in conjuction with the state-owned China Electronics Technology Group. This version of Windows is meant only for China's government employees, not general consumers. Microsoft declined to state what changes were made, but the government has cracked down on software that might have hidden back doors to allow foreign surveliance. The Chinese government still requires an official review before the software can be put on government procurement lists. | |||||
9 | Airbnb founder and CEO Brian Chesky announced the company would be rebranded to Aibiying (aye-bee-yang) for the Chinese market. The name translates to “welcome each other with love”. The company also launched Airbnb Trips in Shanghai, which offers peer to peer led tours. Airbnb is investing heavily in China to compete with local competitior Tujia (two-gee-ah), pledging to triple its workforce and double investment. | |||||
10 | Samung Pay officially launched in India. Customers of Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI Cards and Standard Chartered Bank now have access to the platform. The service also supports Paytm for paying via QR code scan, and will soon support UPI payments for transferring funds between bank acounts directly on mobile. | |||||
11 | Baidu's chief scientist Andrew Ng announced he is stepping down from the company and will officially leave at the end of April. Ng previously contributed to the Google Brain AI research group and founded the education platform Coursera, joining Baidu in 2014. Haifeng Wang will lead Baidu's consolidated research centers. | |||||
12 | In iTunes 12.6, Apple now allows users to continue watching movie rentals on other devices. The "watch anywhere" feature requires iOS 10.3 and tvOS 10.2, which are both still in beta. Rentals are still subject to time limits on viewing. | |||||
13 | In a blog post, Netflix announced that Firefox on Linux can natively play the service's video. 14 | Sony announced that MLB Network is now part of the Core tier for its Playstation Vue streaming service. The service has recently emphasize live sports, streaming both NFL and NBA games in 2016, and introducing a multi-view feature in March for the NCAA basketball tournament. | |||||
15 | A AAA survey of 1,832 drivers found a majority distrust autonomous vehicles. The survey found 75% of overall US drivers would be afraid to drive in an autonomous vehicle, led by Baby Boomers at 82%, with younger generations slightly lower at 69%. Only 20% of respondents stated they would trust an autonomous vehicle to drive them. 61% of respondants did state they wanted at least one semi-autonomous driving feature in their next vehice, such as self-parking or adaptive cruise control. | |||||
