6 | Imagination Technologies disclosed that Apple will stop licensing its graphics processing technology for new products within 15-24 months. Licenses from Apple make up more than half of Imagination's revenue, amounting to 60.7 million pounds in the last fiscal year. Imagination says it, “would be extremely challenging to design a brand new GPU architecture from basics without infringing,” Imagination’s patents. | |||||
7 | Facebook, Mozilla, Jimmy Wales, Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund, and 15 other non-profits and individuals from around the world, have launched the News Integrity Initiative, a $14 million fund to advance news literacy. The Initiative will focus on applied research projects and organizing meetings with industry. The City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism will administer the program. | |||||
8 | HTC’s Viveport VR game subscription service launches Wednesday. PC-based headset users can download up to 5 games a month for $7 a month. HTC introduced the Viveport app store in August. | |||||
9 | Ride-sharing company Grab announced it has agreed to acquire Indonesian online payment company Kudo. Kudo lets people without a credit card or bank account make online purchases. Kudo will be integrated into GrabPay which launched in July. | |||||
10 | According to StatCounter's internet usage numbers, Android is now the world’s most used operating system, with 37.93% marketshare, just ahead of Windows at 37.91%. StatCounter’s data comes from website tracking and does not include app usage. | |||||
11 | In an interview with Recode, Google CBO Philipp Schindler stated YouTube would allow third parties such as DoubleVerify and comScore to audit its efforts to prevent ads running on controversial content. Schindler says algorithm updates have led to a 5 times as many controversial videos being identified and kept clear of advertisers. A Google rep later added that ad impressions on controversial content made up less than 1/1000th of a percent of the advertisers' total. | |||||
12 | Security consultant Rafael Scheel demonstrated a proof-of-concept exploit that would allow someone to take control of a smart TV using a low-cost transmitter to send a malicious TV broadcast. The attack worked against two fully updated Samsung TVs by exploiting known security flaws in the Web browsers. The attack gave full control of the TV. | |||||
13 | Sources tell ReCode that Apple is pitching a deal to bundle premium services HBO, Showtime and Starz for one discounted price, potentially accessible in a standalone product.
