6 | Sources told Reuters that according to the company's internal investigation, Samsung Galaxy Note 7 fires were the result of the battery. Samsung has reportedly replicated the issue, and determined that the cause was not the result of hardware design, or software implimentation. The source advised that the result of Samsung's investigation will be revealed on January 23rd a day before the Q4 earnings call. Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung's mobile division, is expected to reveal the results. | |||||
7 | South Korea’s special prosector is seeking a warrant for the arrest of Samsung head Jay Y. Lee. The office accuses Lee of embezzlement, perjury, and paying bribes totaling 43 billion won ($36.42 million) to a friend of South Korea’s president. Lee is due to appear on Wednesday morning at the Seoul central district court which will decide whether to grant the arrest warrant. | |||||
8 | Facebook will begin rolling out its "fake news" filtering tools to German users, ahead of the country's elections. German users will be be able to flag news stories as fake. Fact checker Correctiv will also be reviewing links to determine which ones to put a warning badge on, with an explanation posted as well. These stories will not be algorithmically prioritized. Facebook will also reduce financial incentives for spammers of hoax news. The German government announced last month a planned law would fine Facebook 500,000 euros for distributiung spurious news stories. | |||||

10 | China’s Cyberspace Administration has ordered mobile app stores to register with the administration immediately. Third party app stores predominate on Chinese phones and often spread malware. 11 | Nvidia released "Shield Experience Upgrade 5.0" Monday adding some features announced at CES. Shield TVs will now run on Android 7.0 Nougat, get apps for Amazon Video, Twitter, NFL, and Comedy Central, and the ew Nvidia Games hub. GeForce Now cloud streaming can offer GTX 1080 graphics and GameStream can handle 4K HDR games from your local PC. | |||||
12 | Business Insider noticed Amazon requested approval from the FCC to conduct wireless communications tests in rural Washington and Seattle, according to a request filed last Wednesday. The tests would involve prototypes to facilitate "innovative communications capabilities and functionalities." Amazon listed Prime Air senior manager and former NASA astronaut Neil Woodward as the main contact in the application. Tests would begin indoors in Seattle, then move outdoor to Kennewick Washington. | |||||
13 | RaspBerry Pi launched the Compute Module 3 meant for embedding in things like TV displays, industrial control systems and home media players. The compute module reduces ports like the SD card slot for a smaller design. The new module features a 64-bit Broadcom BCM2837 processor at up to 1.2GHz with 1GB RAM, and 4GB flash storage. It fits the DDR2 SODIMM sockets and has the same pin-out as the first Pi compute module. Compute Module 3 Lite, which has the same processor and 1GB RAM, minus the flash storage. The standard module costs $30 while the lite is $25. | |||||
14 | Alphabet’s Nest announced it will begin selling its smart home products Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain for pre-order today with delivery in mid-February. 16 | Baidu launched an augmented reality lab in Beijing Monday with 55 employees. It will focus on driving revenue through AR Marketing and eventually expand to healthcare and education. 17 | In a blog post by the Windows Defender ATP Research team, Microsoft found that exploit mitigation features in the Windows 10 Anniversary update prevented zero-day expploits from being effective before they were patched. The AppContainer sandboxing feature shipped in the latest update, and was found to be effective to prevent two kernel-level exploits, which in older versions allowed for elevated privledges. | |||||
18 | Engineering students Seth Robertson and Viet Tran from George Mason University have developed a practical devices to use sound waves to extinguish small fires. Low-frequency bass in the 30-60 Hz range are amplified and focused by a cardboard collimator to extinguish fires up to 12-inches in diameter. The 9-kilogram device cost about $600 to make. | |||||
19 | Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the company's latest update to it's AutoPilot software rolled back a recent change that limited speed to posted speed limit signs. Previous versions allowed users to set the speed up to 5 mph above the speed limit, but this was elimited in a December update. The most recent update brings back the ability. | |||||
