6
Before you beginBefore comparing career options, it’s important to figure out what your options are. When building your list, we highly recommend:
- Doing some career reflection
- Reviewing 80,000 hours' evidence on how to find the right career for you
- Referencing considerations and advice prior to entering consulting (if relevant)
- Reviewing maximizing your impact during consulting (if relevant)
- Considering consulting exit opportunities (if relevant)

How to use1. Make a new copy of this document to edit and keep.
2. In the yellow spaces below, fill in your personal goals, potential career options, and any criteria you’d like to use to compare them. Consider bringing in criteria related to the option’s impact and its personal fit for you.
3. On the “Factor Model Template” tab, define the scale for your criteria. What makes something a 1/5? A 5/5?
4. Still on that tab, add your career options to C7-C13. Your factors and weights will auto-populate based on the listed criteria.
5. Rate your options in the criteria columns on a 1-5 scale, then review the weighted results and rankings (columns R and S).
6. If the weighted list doesn’t feel right, consider tweaking the rankings, options, or criteria.
7. In column T, jot down any questions or additional thoughts that could be useful later. Take a bit of time to reflect on what you’ve discovered through the model and try to identify what your remaining uncertainties are.
8. This tool exists to support your thought process, so please adapt the structure wherever helpful!
