FCC 146 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST
2
On this episode of Finding Christ in Cinema, we ponder the existence of a trilogy's second film as we look for Christian themes in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST. Is Captain Davy Jones an allegory? How do Will and Bootstraps make the story? All that and more in 1, 2, 3, Four-ey!GUEST(S)

Hey, come on in. Admission is free. Grab a bowl of popcorn (extra butter, of course) and find a seat smack dab in the middle - It’s time for Finding Christ in Cinema, episode 146.

I’m Michael, I’m Brenden.

Join us and together we’ll dig deeper into the silver-screen classics of yesteryear as well as the box-office hits of today, we’ll take a closer look at the stories they tell, and see if we find the face of Jesus looking back.

We’re gonna explore the deeper meanings of these films; the plots and their twists; the characters and their choices; and how we can relate them to the gospel of salvation, and ultimately our Christian walk.

You are tuned in to Finding Christ in Cinema on the GCTNetwork.

146 A picture/parable/similitude of the “Golden Rule”/“Royal Law”

What having the mind of Christ looks like.

Bootstrap Bill will do anything (selfish) to escape his fate (which fate?).

He recognizes Will and feels compassion (Good Samaritan)

He acts on compassion (Good Samaritan)

And so does Will!
Matthew 7:9-12 NRSV
Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.

James 2:8 NET
But if you fulfill the royal law as expressed in this scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.

James 2:8 YLT
If, indeed, royal law ye complete, according to the Writing, `Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself,'--ye do well
SOUND BITE 1 - And to what do I owe the pleasure of your carbuncle? | He sent me. Davy Jones. | Ah. So it's you, then. He shanghai’d you into service, eh? | I chose it. I’m sorry for the part I played in the mutiny against you, Jack. I stood up for you. Everything went wrong after that. They strapped me to a cannon. I ended up on the bottom of the ocean, the weight of the water crushing down on me. Unable to move; unable to die, Jack. And I thought that even the tiniest hope of escaping this fate... I would take it. I would trade anything for it. | It’s funny what a man will do to forestall his final judgment. | You made a deal with him too, Jack!

SOUND BITE 2 - Five lashes will remind you to stay [inaudible]! | No! | Impeding me in my duties?! You’ll share the punishment. | I’ll take it all. | Will you now? And what would prompt such and act of charity? | My son. He’s my son.

SOUND BITE 3 - Bootstrap Bill, you’re a liar and you will spend an eternity on this ship! Master Turner, feel free to go ashore. The better next time we make port. | Fool! Why did you do that? | I couldn’t let you lose.

SOUND BITE 4 - I could say I did what I had to when I left you to go pirating. But it would taste a lie to say it wasn’t what I wanted. You owe me nothing, Will. Now go. | They’ll know you helped me. | [laughs] What more can they do to me? | I take this with a promise: I’ll find a way to sever Jones’ hold on you and not rest until this blade pierces his heart! I will not abandon you.

PS Philip Comment on CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL: Kindness and Redemption | FCC 145Hey guys, great job on CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL! I love the production design on this film, it stands out really well.

I also appreciate the theme of God's kindness repeating itself on the show so much. For some people, kindness seems to be in their nature. For the rest of us, it takes some effort. It's so important to have God's kindness drilled into our mind so we can remember to follow His example and pass it on to the world.

Thanks for the show guys! #muhweeladgimli
