| 1. Watershed 1 and new ideas about an "enhanced mineral weathering" experiment. This trip will leave from the parking area above the USFS Pierce lab at 3:00 pm. The trip will last about 2 hours, and can accommodate all who are interested. We will drive to the base of Watershed 1 (calcium was added to this watershed in 1998 to replace calcium lost to acid rain) in and walk up, about 200 m of elevation. There developing plans for a new treatment for this watershed to increase carbon sequestration by stimulating mineral weathering. Trip leader: Charley Driscoll

| 2. Dramatic tree decline at the high elevation hardwoods. This trip will leave from the parking area above the USFS Pierce lab at 3:00 PM. The trip will last about 2 hours and can accomodate all who are interested. We'll drive to the base of Watershed 6 and hike (about 250 m of elevation) to see how the forest is changing at high elevations. We will discuss the elevation gradient and the measurements that we make along this gradient: litter basket/tree productivity, lysimeter sites, gas sampling, and foliage sampling. Trip leaders: Geoff Wilson and John Battles.

| 3. Sensitive species: orchids as a delicate balance. This trip will leave from the parking area above the USFS Pierce lab at 3:00 pm. The trip will last about 2 hours. This will be a walking trip, with about 150 m of elevation. We will visit several taxa of round-leaved orchids and discuss all the interconnections that are necessary for their continued presence in the Valley and elsewhere in the Neast. This is the perfect time of year to see the orchids in bloom. Pollination is one key bottleneck for orchids in general and we will discuss what we know about the pollination ecology of these plants. We will also look for signs of EAB presence and impact, deer presence and impact, and consider the invisible life stages that occur in the soil. Trip leaders: Platanthera orbiculata, P. macrophylla and nat cleavitt.

| 4. The Hubbard Brook Flux Tower. This trip will leave from the parking lot below the USFS Pierce lab (near the barn) at 3:00 PM. This visit to the flux tower in the middle of the Hubbard Brook valley will give participants a chance to see the instrumentation, forest composition around the tower, and one of the taller white pines in the valley. The hike to the tower requires hopping boulders to cross the Hubbard Brook at Cant Dog Road and then a one-mile walk. The total time for the tour will be 2-2.5 hours. Trip leaders: Mark Green and Eric Kelsey.

| 5. Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE). This will be a relatively short field trip that involves a short (five-minute) walk from the upper USFS parking lot, leaving at 3:00 PM. In this experiment, our goal is to determine the long-term effects of warming growing seasons and a small winter snowpack and greater frequency of soil freeze/thaw cycles in winter on the functioning of the northern forest. We will share our experimental design and show everyone the enclosure that holds all of our dataloggers and electrical equipment controlling the experiment. We will also show you the experimental plots and explain how we make measurements of trees, soils, microbes, and invertebrates. Trip leader: Pam Templer
