(also, I put first-year grad student bc it's my first year in this program, but I did an MS before this so....)

However, you as the FI won't have access to your reviews so make sure to ask your advisor for them.
12 | Regupathi (Regu) Angappan | 2019 | FINESST | Planetary Science | 2nd Year Grad | Yes | Yes | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1V3EwqhEaGxt0i4Z25HmZXPq1vBrinV25 | Get in touch with me directly (email: rangapp1@jhu.edu, or twitter: @ReguSphere).

There were many differences, but a few that I can really point to is: relevance to NASA missions (even if joint with ESA or others!), what is the worst case scenario (I don't find dark matter ((LOL)) but still leave a cool and useful code behind!), and a table summarizing the publications.

15 | Leah Shteynman | 2020 | FINESST | Planetary Science | Undergraduate/Incoming Grad Student | Yes | Yes | Email me (lshteynm@asu.edu) and I'll share my proposal with you individually. Advice: showing your project's relevance to SMD goals and significance of its' contribution to big picture science is really really important. Also, the S/T/M section should be well-written and have a logical flow to it - make it easy for reviewers to follow your line of thinking. Get a lot of eyes on your proposal as you write it.
16 | Kate Storey-Fisher | 2020 | FINESST | Astrophysics | 3rd Year Grad | Yes | Yes | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KdoJvbddMkSMPuC6ZY-cj2fA9q6XHFgC | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1WuWG-MyrvscIO-of_nK9rIy-iB-54KgZ | 1) Propose a project that you can be very specific about! I recommend proposing on a project you have already started - you can propose to finish the initial work and extend the scope / applications. This allows you to include preliminary results and figures demonstrating that the proposed research can succeed. Which takes me to... 2) Include figures! One could be background motivation, but I'd recommend at least one on preliminary results or something you have already done that is related. 3) Make it look nice and organized! Don't cram text, include whitespace; use sub-headers, numbering, and bullets; bold key text. 4) Tell yourself how awesome you are for writing a whole dang proposal, no matter what happens :)
17 | Dallin Spencer | 2022 | FINESST | Planetary Science | 1st Year Grad | Yes | Yes | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1lCmQAXuQWXQQu43kC-dcfeM7zEjNbS2mGKafnK7IRck | Same comments as everyone else in the list, you can do things to make your proposal stand out, but in the end it is totally up to chance due to the committee or the other proposals submitted that year! Feel free to email me if you would like more information about the process or my proposal, I'm happy to talk about it. :) dallinspencer@gmail.com

Still, the RNG is pretty strong with these, so I don't know if that actually helped me in the end or if it was just the whims of the reviewers. Definitely don't feel too bad if it doesn't work out for you the first time.

I thought I was doomed to never get funding, but that turned out to be wrong. You got this :)
27 | Marissa Dudek | 2021 | FINESST | Earth Science | 1st Year Grad | Yes | No | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1WWCQeHypUYwEvv1WPG0UjaBbdYe4U8Zl | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jO4ydLPGTSTkC5BKVIpNDVQbGW6ojnBj | This was my second year submitting to FINESST, but the first year submitting for this specific project. The reviewers really liked that I had an established rapport with the PI and Collaborators, and that we had a defined contingency plan if things weren't to go according to plan.
28 | Jack Sheehan | 2024 | FINESST | Planetary Science | 2nd Year Grad | Yes | No | https://drive.google.com/open?id=12vjQlDlYw0XQUCLnQaYKUTZybA7wv0Lh | https://drive.google.com/open?id=194z-1jovgaUehwI403nWNrVDgKfKJfiD | This was my second attempt, the biggest changes were writing the science for a slightly wider audience and emphasizing contingency plans. Email me jacksheehan@g.harvard.edu to talk more about it!

31 | Roberto Aguilar | 2024 | FINESST | Planetary Science | 2nd Year Grad | Yes | Yes | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1yrtyMkonUWSi4FIXYE6vPyffeYi70dtg | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1niLzuVP9gjuf4lEkmFD49Q15d5554nl1 | The days before submission are stressful, try to take breaks for stretching and excerise :)
32 | Ryan Golant | 2024 | FINESST | Astrophysics | 4th Year Grad | Yes | No | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Ba_VzVrmeXB4OVGSOrT0D256STB8ONh8 | https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jJdouNVj8IT9vvCSwjKwiLB6ZknVV8LV | The FINESST selection process can be a bit of a lottery, so you definitely shouldn't feel dismayed if your proposal isn't selected. Fortunately, you can apply more than once!
