2 | 7/27/2022 7:57:32 | jason.ondo@lausd.net | Ondo | Jason | Steel Inspector | (213) 408-9605 | Current LAUSD Guide Specification | Add To | 05 1200 - Structural Steel Framing | None | 05 1200 - 3.05(Finishing)-C | Regarding the physical marking of seismic steel moment frame protected zones, references AISC 341-16 Section D1(3) states discontinuities created by fabrication or erection operations and attachments or penetrations within the protected zones are prohibited, and AISC 358-18 states that prequalified moment frame protected zones shall be “designated”. Guidance on how the marking should be physically performed to designate these zones is not provided. Highly visible markings/signs give maintenance and other workers, who may not be knowledgeable on the importance of Protected Zones, a warning before any damage or attachments are made. Markings help to ensure the integrity of the structure during maintenance or additional work in the future. The way the zones are to be “designated” is not given in the AISC 341-16 or district specifications. Precedent for a uniform manner in which to designate Protected Zone has been given in the Los Angeles City Building and Safety Department’s Information Bulletin P/BC 2017-098. The bulletin shows a recommended detail where a warning sign that reads “WARNING: It is PROHIBITED to attach and to cause penetration or damage to the plastic hinging zones of steel moment-frames. These PROHIBITED conditions include bolts, holes, screws, shot pins, welds and tack welds (permanent or temporary). Failure to comply with these requirements may cause the replacement of steel -- DO NOT MOVE OR REMOVE THIS SIGN.” It recommends the sign be permanently attached with adhesive to steel when not fireproofed and hung on the steel with a 1”x16ga strap when steel is has fireproofing. I have seen design professionals direct the contractor to mark the Protected Zones with “PZ”. The misunderstanding of what “PZ” means by future maintenance or construction workers is very possible. Clear, uniform guidance would assist contractors in their work and provide an added measure of safety for life and serviceability of the building. | 8/1/22 | Y

Provide Thomas & Betts XJG-TB, O-Z/Gedney. type AX with bonding strap and clamps, Cooper XJGD or equal. At exterior locations, provide Thomas & Betts XJG-TB, O-Z/Gedney type EX, Cooper XJGD, or equal. Provide O-Z/Gedney type AXDX, or equal combination deflection/expansion fittings at all seismic separations. Provide manufacture’s internal and external bonding jumpers at all locations. Liquid-tight metal conduit or flexible metal conduit shall not be approved at expansion joints, separations between buildings or seismic separations. | 26 0533 2.01 D. 1. For expansion joints provide Thomas & Betts XJG-TB, O-Z/Gedney. type AX with bonding strap and clamps, Cooper XJGD or equal. At exterior locations, provide Thomas & Betts XJG-TB, O-Z/Gedney type EX, Cooper XJGD, or equal. Provide O-Z/Gedney type AXDX, or equal combination deflection/expansion fittings at all seismic separations. Provide manufacture’s internal and external bonding jumpers at all locations. Liquid-tight metal conduit or flexible metal conduit shall not be approved at expansion joints, separations between buildings or seismic separations. | Many electrical contractors do not realize that there is a difference between an expansion joint and a seismic separation. Specifically identifying the 1st two sentences to be related to expansion joints would clarify the requirements of this specification. | 9/21/2022 | Y
