Obtained a work visa to move back to the USA (lived there for 5 years as a student) and become a full time freelance visual artist. | IT DEPENDS ON THE PROJECT | Music Industry**Full Visual Roll Out: depending how big the artist is and if signed to label or not etc. Strictly for label artist, a full visual roll out (which can include youtube visualizers, social media "out now" assets, spotify canvases, animated album cover, etc) can range from a minimum of 5k-10k. | smaller, unsigned artists: range from $200-350 give or take with a few options (around 3 different designs) increased to $400 if they want an animated version. For an independent artist that has a relatively nice following and is somewhat wellknown, minimum goes for $350-400 give or take (only offering one design) and raise to $500 if they want an animated version. Lastly, for a singed artist under a lable, minimum of $450-550 (only offering one design) and raise to 650 if they want an animated version. | Music Industry** A youtube visualizer of a single release: For a smaller independant artist, $500. 5 | @margogdp illustration and @margarita_tk_ gráfico design | (@sashaguimaraes) I am a Brazilian Visual Artist freelancer who's work ranges from 2d graphic world, all the way to complex videos with layered mediums of all sorts such as illustration, motiongraphics, graphic design, etc. First advice and the most important is to pave your own way in the industry youre headed in, with your own style. this might mean fewer clients at first and less income, but once you reach a point where your style and aesthetic speaks for itself and no one but you can create that, people will strat coming to you faster than you think. Spend time on your craft without the need of attention because working on your style is an investment. I am currently working mainly within the music industry, with both really big labels such as Republic Records and EMI Records, my pricing always aims to be the highest given the labels can easily afford that. I take into consideration who the artist is under the label (very popular or smaller who just got signed) and make a flat rate accordingly. I have found that remaining TRUE to my own style and aesthetic in the long run has brought me more clients who are willing to pay my regular rates since I am the only one who can provide what they are searching for. Doing this has allowed me to build strong connections and having those same clients always returning for more collaborations. Very few cases I will allow a big flexibility in my style or aesthetic, only if it will lead me to huge opportunities and connections that align with my values and area of work I see myself headed to. If not, I kindly reject projects that do not match my artistry and lead them to fellow artists and friends who can provide them what they seek. Be true to yourself because a lot of this truly is building professional bonds with a friend-to-family energy that will create a wonderful work circle in your life, leading to new people and contacts solely based on how lovely you are as a person and also as a professional visual artist. On the other hand, working with smaller musicinas or independent ones who are not singed, naturally my flate rates will be lower but all according to how they will use my products, etc. I suggest doing some research on flat fees vs hourly rates and understand both, and then see what suits you and your work flow best. Charge for your skill, creative eye and talent. the more years you work, the faster you will become and this does not mean you should charge less. If a client complains about that, it is a sign they are not the best client for you and do not respect your work as much. People who really want you in their project will pay. That is also how you build respect in the industry as well as self respect with your work! | ilustración 4+ designe 1 | $200-$300 | depending on what client need but full brandbook around $800-1000 | $30-$100 | $100+ | $40-$250 | $30 denwral design and $20 each post | $30 por a set of 5 emots | depending on size gif around $40-$80. 6 | I'm a freelance self-taught digital artist who started in vector-imitation graphics and switched over to original illustration and sequential art in the past few years. This is not my primary source of income, only a hobby. The strongest advice I can give about money-related things is to find someone to help you with rates and yell at you when you're undercharging. It can be hard to ask for what you truly deserve (as you can clearly see from my suboptimal rates), and sometimes a little bit of outside accountability can help set you on the right track. :) Good luck! | I'm a freelance self-taught digital artist who started in vector-imitation graphics and switched over to original illustration and sequential art in the past few years. I have more than 5 years of experience in the creative area experimenting and designing for social media, apparel, illustration, branding and music. I'm on my way of getting my degree in Visual Communication, also, learning video, motion graphics and UI/UX to be updated to the current times. I live on a very low salary and adquisitive power nation but with a high cost of living, so, I rely on the global market to work freelance and live. 26 | Bones | I know charging by the hour is the standard method of charging by creatives, but like others have mentioned personally I like to just charge a flat rate and then from there outline expectations, scope, revisions, project length etc. I do this because I dislike the notion of making less money because you are efficient. I'm sure many people here have watched Futur and how they talk about pricing and I do agree with what they say. Why should I make less when I'm saving you time because I am good at what I do. This is a generalization and with larger projects and more team members things change, I am mostly speaking to the short term freelance projects. Also everything scales with the size of the company like thats just how it has to be. Don't charge the same amount for a 50 person company as you would for 500 person company you'd probably be a consultant or on salary at that point but still. Have a portfolio even if it is bonesmohr.myportfolio.com just have something until you can properly build a website. Also I love helping friends out and I love doing things for free or for fun as long as my hearts in it and typically those friends will repay the favor when I need help on a project *although* this is a fine line to walk. My point is don't forget to love what you do and have fun with it.x | 5+ | 30 | 1000+ Solely logo | 5,000 brand guidelines, styleguide etc bigger company higher the price, more people will see it, more revisions, more time you get the point | Really depends on scope of project for small business and friends just a couple hundred bucks, anything to do with runs over 500 shirts at least $1,000 scaling with amount of shirts printed | 3000+ again so dependent on scope, if I'm also supplying 3d assets and designing a higher end website it can be 5,000-10,000+ | 1000+ depending on the client honestly, I have some friends in the music industry I would genuinely enjoy making album art for so i would charge on the lower end obviously if it is a big client price reflects that | 1000+ again depends on scope and complexity | 1500+ good motion graphics are so taxing haha I have learned either the client and I have a relationship or I'm charging you up the wazoo | 1000+ | 3000+ Scope again

46 | Christina | My Background: 4 year Honours Bachelor of Design (YSDN), Graphic Design & Illustrator, Primarily work in the music industry My Advice: KNOW YOUR WORTH!! Even when working with smaller businesses/clients or up an coming businesses. I primarily work with smaller musicians and music labels, and most of them are willing and able to pay me my rates. My rates are flexible based on their budgets, but it's very rare I have someone refuse to work with me/negotiate lower prices after hearing my rates. I wasted way too much time working with a company that was majorly underpaying me, and since leaving, no one has turned me down over my rates. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions to make sure you know exactly what the client wants! | 3 years since graduating, 5 years of design freelancing, ~8 years of illustration freelancing | Small town Ontario, Canada | Rarely, but $80-$100 per/hr. 54 | At each step I say how much they've spent already so they can keep track and hold back on feedback etc. if they want to. Make your invoices really detailed with images and exact descriptions of what you did and how long each step took so there can't be any panic on their end about prices. 55 | C | I've been designing professionally for 7+ years, ranging from in-house, contract to freelance work. I went to school for graphic design and also create digital art. Second, have your own contracts and paperwork handy – a general contract template/ letter of agreement between you and the client, an invoice template (also charge 50% of your project fee up front, it'll save you stress and worry later on). 62 | Self taught, Musician for years and only took up designing at the start of the pandemic. Still not really sure what im doing. Always discuss the full scope of the project with client either through message or video call etc including rough estimates for extra deliverables that may arise before giving final quote. Use a contract for every project. All price logic/breakdowns are internal, keep the quotes simple flat numbers and offer alternatives if the price isnt a match rather than whittling away at the quality of the final deliverable to fit the budget. Any freebies or mates rates you offer be sure to list what the price should have been on your invoice with the reduction included. This has helped make the gesture mean more to clients if it has a monetary value rather than just being absorbed into the wider project. It also means returning customers are easier to accept the cost next time they come to you for a project. | 2 years designing 1.5 freelance | $200 min | $200 min | $200 per design/side | $200 for single/EP $500 for album. It's hard to quantify creative work in terms of the time you spent on it because a lot of the process is just thinking about it when you may not be diverting all your capacities towards the work. You may not need more money, but it never really hurts and by raising your prices you increase the standards of pay for designers all over the world, some of whom may genuinely need more money to survive in their country / life situation. | 2 years | Free | $200-400 | Never done a full branding but it wouldn't be less than 1500USD | 300 and above, depending on complexity | 400USD and above, try to sell license to produce a certain amount of units. 70 | David McGillivray | I’ve been a professional designer for 13 years, majority of which I’ve working in NYC in the startup scene. You can see my work here: www.dmcg.co and I’m on twitter here @dmcgco I was originally a high school drop out, I worked in a bar, an insurance company, a hardware store, until I realized I wanted to go back to school and study design. So I made my own portfolio from an assortment of designs I’d done, and got in. I studied design in England and have a 1st class BA in Art & Design. I was offered a job in NY straight out of college thanks to my focus on designing for the iPad (which had just been released), I worked in-house at a few different startups before going freelance in around 2015. These days I take on around 3 client projects a year, alongside ongoing consulting for a startup, and I also have my own loungewear brand that I pull a small salary from too. I charge projects on a fixed flat fee (see below advice on selling your time), mutually agreed upon scope, and a fixed timeline. So clients know what they’re getting, when they’re getting it, and how much they’re paying, before I move a pixel. Most of my projects range between $50,000–$100,000 generally speaking. How do I price each project if I don’t charge per hour? I use time as a starting point but as a tool to help me reach a flat fee to charge. I use the largest increments of time that I can as a general weighting for how ‘big’ the project is. Is this a two month project, or a 6 week project? – granted you have to be experienced enough to accurately gauge this from the outset, which I am, but understand everyone isn't. Then I layer in the most important context; who is the company, how valuable is the work, how well funded are they, how much will this move the needle for their company? i.e. how much value am I creating. Then I position the price in the market lower than a small design studio, but higher than the avergae freelancer. This is more of an art than a science, granted, but hte most important first step to getting paid properly is moving away form horuly rates, make the time increments increasingly larger so you're not tracking minutes. A random smattering of advice advice: 1. Only put in your portfolio the kind of work you want to do more of, be intentional about what you show, don’t put in everything, 8-10 projects max. 2. Whether you think you need one or not, have a portfolio website, even if you’re (“too busy”), not having one makes it much harder for people to refer/share your work and return to it. 3. Dealing with clients is 50% of being a designer. GET GOOD AT IT. It will make you a better, and more successful designer (they are different things). 4. Presenting your work is vital, you need to be able to communicate well and sell your work to the client. Set aside time before you share client work (always in person/over zoom, never just email it) to think about what you want to say and what is important to the client. When I say sell I don’t mean like a used car salesman, but like a professional providing a service, which is what you are. 5. Always agree on the scope of work clearly up front, and put it in a signed agreement. NEVER start work without an agreed upon scope. 6. Always get a deposit upfront before you start. I do 50%, but could be less, just get something. 7. Don’t be afraid to talk about money. It should be the one of the FIRST things you talk about with a client. ‘What’s the budget you have for this?’ Is an easy question to ask. Be confident about doing so. 8. I know it’s hard when you’re starting out, but, as much as you can you should move to NOT SELLING YOUR TIME. Charging per hour is a broken system for design/creative work. You are not a plumber, how long it takes to construct a design does not equal the value of that design work. It is bad for both sides, you and client. You have a genius idea that doesn’t require a lot of production work, and you nail it in a day, but that means you get paid less because you did a good job. Works the other way round too, if you’re having a creative block on a project and it takes you way longer than it should, the client gets penalized. Don’t sell your time. Sell the value your design creates. The best step you can take towards this is not charge per hour, that’s the worst thing you can do. Make the increments of time bigger; move to charge in days or half days, then eventually move to weeks, and finally just use time as a loose starting point to price your projects. 9. Pay attention to the zeitgeist, design has to assimilate into culture, often design creates culture! – know what is happening in the world, in art, in fashion, in politics, in technology. It was me paying attention to culture unfolding thousands of miles away which landed me a job out of college. 10. Being freelance when you’re early in your career is HARD. I generally advise new designers to try and get a job, put yourself in a position to learn form others and get a steady paycheck while doing so. Getting paid to learn is a good situation to be in! 11. Everyone starts somewhere, and doing small gigs, album art, posters and flyers is an awesome area to cut your teeth. But in terms of building wealth and moving towards financial independence, that's a hard path to take if you don't evolve. If your'e early in your career and wokring in this arena, and want to progress to a more lucrative path, I'd highly reocmmend checking out the 'Brand Designer' roles out there in the startup world, tehre's some great fullfilling gigs out there that will teach you a lot, and pay decent money doing so. Learn the space, research the companies, see what their output is like, and push yourself that direction if it interests you. As a freelancer you'll only earn as much as your clients are able to spend on design, and some industries are simply better funded than others. 12. Maybe most improtant is be a pro. Do what you say you're going to do, when you say it. Be polite, be on time, set expectations, communcate clearly, be reliable, honest oh, and be NICE :), | 13 years | no logos in isolation | $50,000–$75,000 – I generally prefer to do a brand identity with at least one concrete deliverable, such as homepage, so this price would reflect that piece too, and often a few other contexts to visualize the brand. But the core idenity pieces and defining the visual language are the brunt of the work. | $30,000 – $80,000 – depending on the wbesite scope, a big ecommerce website can easily be $80k.

92 | Pau | For flat rate projects including assets I don't have a "package" for, I usually estimate the min and max amt of time I would spend on each element (drafting, font-searching, logo, revisions, etc) and multiply those totals w an hourly price I feel comfortable with. Make sure that hourly price isn't your lowest in case the project ends up taking you a bit longer, but within scope. From there I see what feels right based on size of client's brand/project/audience (might be a bit unpop to go by gut feeling but ever since I did this, I stopped feeling resentful/underpaid for all my projects) and send the offer. If the client says it's too high or seems to take a lot of time thinking about it, I ask what their budget is and let them know what I can do within that price. Otherwise tell them to find someone else. I don't follow up with no-responders — it's not worth it!! Maybe once if I really feel I want to. 93 | Pao | I typically lead with asking for their budget from the get go, to see if we can work together. Depending on if their a small business, a starting artist, or an established entity, Ill gauge how reasonable their budget it from their and move forward. Given that they have too low a budget for what they are, i explain to them that either they increase it, or look for someone else. With smaller, less established artists, i tend to work out more affordable deals, but for the most part i try and get it to the standard. It’s also good to inform your client that though these are standard rates, each project is unique and will have variable prices, and can range around these general figures! | ~6 | $20-60 per hour (varies based on specificity of the order, revisions made by client, etc.). | Min $300 | n/a | $75-200 | Min $150 | n/a | n/a | Min $300 | n/a | Min $100 (can reach up to ~$1000 depending on how intricate the piece is, and how big the size of the canvas is.
