1USDOT Grant Scope of WorkAt Nevada DOT, we have the same tight schedule for our Stage 1 SMART grant with USDOT, however our scope cannot include design, deployment and testing. We will have to do that in Stage 2. Is this 18 month effort associated with a USDOT SMART grant?WE have a SMART Grant, and it is related, but it doesn't have anything to do with schedule. Automotive Manufacturers Coordination
Can you elaborate on the interactions/engagements you are having with automotive manufacturers? Has there been any US or global auto OEM committed to C-V2X?General Motors (GM) is a partner on the CTW project, and we will eventually have a GM vehicle with all the applications that they have developed for V2X plus the applications we have. Outside of the CTW project, we have a SMART Grant where we're working closely with automakers through an organization called CAMP, the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partners, to understand what their needs are for broadcast of J2735 messages, SPAT and MAP in particular. They're focused on understanding whether the data that we broadcast at our intersections is accurate, consistent, and reliable enough that they can trust it for the vehicle to make life-safety decisions. The application that we're working around currently is a red-light-violation-warning application.

We've been working with automotive manufacturers for several years through SAPE IT and the connected transportation interoperability committee who's writing a bunch of these standards and specs (4511 series for instance) to make sure that what we're designing, building, and broadcasting meets the needs of the automakers; they want to make sure that the latency and periodicity of the message broadcast meets their needs and a variety of other things. No US-based automaker has made a public announcement about their intension of using C-V2X in their vehicles, so we don't have a solid basis for what their schedule or intention might be. However, the fact that a number of them are interested in working with us and solving some of these technical questions is encouraging to us and tells us that they still have some interest in what we're trying to do.

UDOT has also been talking with some trucking companies based here in Utah who use our highways about what their needs, parameters, and constraints are and how we can get TIM messages into their cabs. We don't want to distract the drivers, but we want to get key safety information to them.

WYDOT worked with approximately 300 53-foot trucking vehicles as part of their DSRC implementation. CVX wouldn't be materially different in terms of some of the signal loss and obstruction that you get from a trailer. The USDOT has the documentation regarding this work on their website

Automotive Manufacturers Coordination
The "vehicle insights" use case requires access to IVNs, and auto OEMs are dead set against allowing that in a standardized manner if at all. How are you addressing that critical requirement?We have varied limits of capabilities to integrate with the vehicle CAN Bus. Integration is different on every Make/Model/Year/Trim of a vehicle. 7C-V2X HardwareAssuming that the current kinematic state estimation (aka PVT/POTI/KASE/...) employed in your devices is capable of optimally incorporating RTCM (and other) information to produce "better estimates", the current BSM is currently unable to disseminate the necessary information to "optimally save lives". 21GeofencingWhere is the geofencing of the workzones performed? Is it done in the RSUs or in central system? If the geofencing is being done in the RSUs, how difficult was it to get this done?Geofencing is done in the central systems where the TIMs are created, and those central systems typically have very good access to roadway location data. If drivers are getting additional messages in the car, will it make drivers tired of seeing messages and make them ignore?To mitigate the risk of alert fatigue or message desensitization, the system design will prioritize relevance, timing, and clarity of information delivery. 23SDSMWhy was SDSM used for VRU alerts instead of PSM? What if one agency uses PSM, a second agency uses SDSM, and a third agency uses TIM for the same use case? How can we make sure that we all use the same type of V2X message for same kind of application?This is something we evaluated and explored and felt like SDSM was most appropriate to use with LiDAR. A PSM might make sense if the person had some sort of OBU on their person... but in this case with a LiDAR sensing peds, bikes, cars, etc., SDSM better packages that messaging. 27SDXHow is the SDX maintained? How do new partners get added?SDX was originally developed by the USDOT, entitled the "situation data warehouse" (SDW). The USDOT did not want to maintain that going forward, so they began looking for a partner. Trihydro Corporation took on that responsibility and has expanded it significantly, focusing more on the safety aspect of it and providing free access to it as a service back to the community. We're trying to make this a one-stop-shop nationwide so that every data provider can make the information available in one place and any data consumer can pull from it. We think this is very important for the navigation companies.

33VRU / LiDARFor advanced applications such as VRU, LiDAR detection, and RTCM position corrections, what techincal contraints have you identified that could limit that broader deployment?We're in the early stages of understanding LiDAR technology; we have little institutional knowledge about these devices. How long will they last for? What are the maintenance needs? We've had to change hardware suppliers at times and shift technology a little bit with that change. In this deployment process, we're trying to understand the balance of how much alertness needs to be given to the driver with all the busyness that traveling brings to roads. We've had the challenge of getting enough range and identifying vehicles soon enough distance-wise. 34LiDARWhat made you prefer LiDAR based system as compared to camera-based systems?Over the years, UDOT has been evaluating the pros and cons to both systems, and our signal team has reported that a lot of our roadway systems are on an east-west grid, which means our drivers deal with a lot of sun glare and things of that nature. This would be problematic with camera-based sytems unlike a LiDAR-based system that provides great granularity and detail no matter what time of day it is.
