“Donald Trump is helping the economy, he has helped the economy. Individuals who are really concerned about their investments are really excited about the Donald Trump presidency continuing,” Hercules Investment CEO James McDonald said on Yahoo Finance’s The First Trade. “Donald Trump is continuing to keep the market up. I think Donald Trump has something up his sleeves, and has a plan for keeping markets elevated.”

“Early mover advantage is real, whether you are talking about nation building or building autonomous vehicles. And Ford has struggled,” said Hercules Investment CEO James McDonald on Yahoo Finance’s The First Trade. “I don’t like Ford. I don’t like manufacturing. I don’t like the auto sector. But I do love autonomous vehicles, AI and so Tesla will be the winner there.” Tesla shares are in one of McDonald’s portfolios.

For Hercules Investment CEO James McDonald, the threat of a U.S. recession is by no means priced into stocks. And investors, said McDonald, would be wise to realize that and position their portfolios accordingly.

“A recession is imminent, and it's OK,” McDonald said on Yahoo Finance’s The First Trade. “A 30% correction sounds scary right, but the Dow, S&P 500 and the Nasdaq rallied to nearly 30% in just one year last year. If you look at a 35% to 45% trim from here, it sounds bad but it just takes us back first quarter 2016. Understand that the numbers are relative, it is a good time to anticipate a major pullback and then get back in the market.”

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH): JAMES MCDONALD, CEO/CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER, HERCULES INVESTMENTS, SAYING: "When earnings come down markets contract and so we have the double effect of the health scare and then the coming effect of economic contraction and when you're at the top of a bull cycle that's never gone as far and as high as it has this past cycle, you're going to see significant contraction; people taking money off the table and we expect the market to lose half of its value from its peak and at that point we'll go back in and start buying."

Bruised Hedge Funds Tentatively Looking for Risk Again

Some funds that are betting on the market retesting its lows are still looking to do some buying in certain areas. James McDonald, CEO at Los Angeles-based alternative investment manager Hercules Investments has a trade which would profit from the stock market dropping back to March lows. While a majority of his buying would occur once such a pullback materializes, the fund has been making "incremental buys," McDonald said.
