| AFP-NM Strategic Plan: January 1, 2020 - December 31, 2022 | Annual Progress Update
| Strategies | Action Items | 2020 | 2021 | 2022
| Goal 1: We will know our community and respond to their needs.
| AFP-NM will gather qualitative and quantitative data to make informed decisions regarding resources and programming. | Develop tools to gather quantitative and qualitative data from our members, stakeholders, and partners | In conversations with chapter members, requests for resources in deconstructing white supremacy, meeting the needs of diverse nonprofit service recipients, donors, and staff, and opportunities for resource sharing and networking were abundant. Information gathering was also done in support of the identification and organization of chapter affinity groups. | AFP-NM issued a lengthy survey to 75 New Mexico funders, as well as all AFP members and community stakeholders in order to gather information regarding the funding landscape in New Mexico. The survey was focused on barriers, successes, and opportunities for change in terms of grantmaking in our state. The AFP Board President, Immediate Past President, and President-Elect engaged in one-on-one conversations with chapter members, community stakeholders, potential new board members, chapter members and fundraisers who are not current members in order to respond to gather feedback, build relationships, and better identify the needs of New Mexico fundraisers. All monthly programming was followed by solicitations for survey feedback, which was reviewed on a regular basis. | AFP-NM issued an updated survey to New Mexico funders in order to gather information regarding the funding and grants landscape in new Mexico. This data was collated and discussed in the final session of the 2022 AFP-NM funders forum. AFP-NM board members identified opportunities to meet with funders and fundraisers for coffee and other casual conversations throughout the year to gather qualitative data around the chapter's efforts, successes, and shortfalls. A comprehensive survey in preparation for the 2022 strategic plan was also issued to all members and community stakeholders.
| Review and analyze data and structure programming and other chapter efforts in response to the data analysis. | AFP-NM offered programming focused on cultural inclusion, disability awareness and accessibility, anti-racism, decolonizing wealth, and a brown bag event, at which participants were able to form and structure affinity groups. | AFP-NM faciliated a conversation between nonprofit professionals and community funders, focused on barriers in grant processes and requirements that negatively impact our community. | AFP-NM is currently collating all 2021/2022 data to be shared with funders, nonprofit professionals, and others who are interested in barriers to success in fundraising in New Mexico.
| AFP-NM will provide accessible, relevant, and meaningful opportunities for education and community resources. | Identify and organize affinity groups. | AFP-NM issued a survey focused on community interest in affinity groups. Chapter membership, stakeholders, and the nonprofit community at-large were able to provide feedback regarding whether affinity groups would be valuable, and, if formed, shared what would be most helpful for them in terms of type, size, and structure. A brown bag luncheon was hosted where participants were able to form and structure affinity groups for fundraisers who identify as people of color, emerging fundraisers, seasoned fundraisers, and fundraisers located outside of Central New Mexico. | Affinity group members continued to report interest in the groups as a resource, but simultaneously shared feelings of burnout and overwhelm in relation to zoom meetings. All groups met 2x or more during this year, but reported low attendance and engagement. Additional support for the affinity groups will be needed moving forward. Particular momentum was build within the rural fundraisers affinity group. Conversations regarding the opportunity to identify region-specific affinity groups had a positive response and could build resources/ comraderie among fundraisers who are navigating similar successes and barriers to success. | While the seasoned, emerging, and fundraisers of color affinity groups have reported a desire to table their meetings at this time, the rural affinity group continues to thrive. They were able to host an in-person meeting in the Northwest region of the state, focused on board development. Greater interest in the Northwest region has built among nonprofit professionals, funders, and foundations in that area. Further opportunities to form regionally-focused affinity groups could be explored.
| Develop creative ways of addressing geographical challenges. | In addition to forming a rural fundraisers affinity group, AFP-NM, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, transitioned to virtual programming via Zoom, expanding the chapter's ability to reach fundraisers across the state and in other regions of the country and world. During this time, participants from out-of-state and Canada attended our programming. | All programming was offered virtually during this calendar year. When possible, programming was recorded and distributed to registrants following workshops, allowing those who were unable to attend to access workshop content. | All programming was offered virtually during this calendar year. 8 | Goal 2: We will authentically engage with each other and the community.
| AFP-NM will develop innovative ways of delivering existing programming, as well as new and more inclusive strategies for community engagement. | Re-evaluate and adapt National Philanthropy Day based on relevancy, community value, and principles of equity/ inclusion. | NPD programming moved away from nominations and award selection during this year, instead focusing on celebrating success stories in the nonprofit community, as well as highlighting ethical and grassroots storytelling techniques. Attendance to the event was free, with the option for attendees to make a donation in support of AFP in lieu of ticket sales. NPD was hosted virtually in order to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19. | National Philanthropy Day was suspended for the 2021 calendar year. | The value and relevancy of NPD continues to be a discussion point for the AFP-NM chapter. In 2022, in lieu of hosting an event, AFP-NM solicited communtiy nominations for awards recognizing outstanding philanthropic efforts on the part of a nonprofit professional or community member, a young person in New Mexico, and an organization that has embraced inclusive practices. Awards of $500 for the nonprofit, and $100 each for the individual honorees were issued.
| Increase accessibility of the funders forum so that more organizations can benefit/ participate. | Because of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 funders forum as typically planned was cancelled, per the orders of the Governor of New Mexico. In lieu of reconvening, funders forum programming was integrated into monthly chapter meetings held via Zoom throughout the calendar year, on a pay-as-you-can basis. | In response to community feedback, and leveraging the data collected from funders and nonprofit organizations, an updated digital funders guide was issued to all event attendees. Conversations were held based on geographic reach. All participants were encouraged to attend a final session during which dialogue between funder and nonprofit professionals focused on barriers to success, opportunities for change, and the grants landscape in New Mexico. The funders forum as a whole was shifted to the third quarter of the year in response to requests from fundraisers and funders. | Funders forum was scheduled and held virtually with a comprehensive digital funders guide and conversations spread across three weeks based on geographic focus. The event was hosted in September for the second year in a row, based on positive feedback regarding timing from previous attendees.
| Faciliate increased collaborative dialogue between funders and nonprofit professionals. | AFP-NM faciliated a funders forum session focused on conversation between nonprofit professionals and community funders, with participants encouraged to reflect on barriers in grant processes and requirements that negatively impact our community. Surveys were issued in order to collect data from fundraisers/ nonprofit professionals and funders alike. Over 75 foundations, corporate grantors, and other funding organizations were contacted to participate in funders forum. Over 20 organizations attended and/ or responded to surveys. | AFP-NM hosted our 2022 funders forum session focused on meaningful conversation between nonprofit professionals and community funders. Data from 2021 and 2022 will be used to discuss concrete and authentic plans for change.
| Identify and develop alternatives to AFP membership that cultivate increased participation and access to resources for those who are unable to formally participate in the organization. | Affinity group participation was offered for free for all members and non-members following the onset of the pandemic. Beginning in June 2020, all programming was offered on a pay-what-you can basis for members and non-members alike. | Beginning in January 2021 to April 2021, all programming was offered on a pay-what-you can basis for members and non-members alike. In June 2021, continuing until December 2021, all programming shifted to a $25 flat fee for members, $35 flat fee for non-members, with a $5 accessibility option available to members and non-members who were unable to afford traditional pricing. This option was offered based on self-selection, with no eligibility requirements. | All programming was offered with a $25 fee for members, $35 fee for non-members, and a $5 accessibility option to any members or non-members who were unable to afford traditional pricing. This option was offered based on self-selection, with no eligibility requirements.
| AFP-NM will improve board cohesion and increase equity and transparency in its organizational structure. | Develop a comprehensive onboarding process for new members. Clarify expectations and share intentions regarding board culture, transparency, and honest feedback. Provide clear and concise role descriptions and operating procedures. | Preliminary board composition and nomination goals were developed. | A formal nominations committee was formed and reviewed all board applications, in addition to approaching individual fundraisers that would add value to the board of directors. | A guiding board document was developed through which board roles were clarified, as well as operating procedures and organizational history. This document will be invaluable in onboarding new board members and provide better resources and guidance to existing board members.
| Develop ongoing learning opportunities for board members related to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access. | Chapter-wide training, with board attendance highly encouraged, was delivered focused on inclusive facilitation, white fragility, transgender awareness, cultural inclusion, disability acceptance and accessibility, decolonizing wealth, and ethical storytelling. The board also participated in a more focused anti-racism training session in February of 2020.
| Explore alternative board communication methods and roles/ structures. | A new board structure was developed for 2022 implementation, embracing a co-Presidency model with two year overlapping terms.
