5	How can the Earth Space Science requirement be met?	Hon physics, astronomy with phyics, AP Environmental science. They can also complete the third year with IB sports exercise health
6	Can you repeat the computer requirements with foreign languages please	We will speak to this later in the presentation
7	If our student took spanish 1-2 in middle school and then spanish 3 in 9th grade, will they have met the 2 year requirement or is it two years IN high school?	They will have met the requirement. Some of the more competitive colleges MAY want to see more time in high school, but they will have met the requirement
8	We were told that students just had to "take" the MD state assesments" not Pass... can you respond to this?	This depends on when the students took the course attached to the specific test. It varies from year to year and student to student at this point. Your best bet is to reach out ot your student’s counselor to find out which tests they need to pass and which they will pass just by attempting it

10	Will the second semester of Health be offered as a summer class in 2024?	Yes, registration for online summer health will be end of March/Early April. Please reach out to your child's counselor around that time
11	If you take IB, do you get the extra point for GPA, like for honors classes?	Most schools will weight it this way, yes. Ms. Smithson, IB coordinator, would know the most about this

13	Will the new Cultural Studies focused 10th gr English continue into 11th grade?	Students who took the Cultural Studies English 10 are encouraged to take IB or AP in 11th grade.
14	what is IB Art 1 & 2?	ib art students will complete portfolios that have an art theme. Ms. Brown-Louis is the IB art teacher. If you send me an email, I can forward it so she can give you a more detailed answer.
15	Can students take IB classes without being in the full IB program?	Yes, they can complete the class and receive a certificate in that course if they complete all the coursework and submit it to IB, or complete an IB exam if required
16	what is the difference between Stat 1 and AP Stat?	AP Stat is usually for seniors. It covers more topics, goes at a deeper level, and goes at a faster pace than Honors Stat. There is an exam students can take to earn college credit. Juniors can take Honors Stat (and then AP Stat or IB Math or Financial Math as a senior).
17	I think i Missed something - I assume kids need to take PreCalc prior to Calc?	Yes. And the Calculus class they take ( Honors or AP) will depend on if they are in PreCal or Honors PreCal and their performance.
18	Can u comment on calculus ab/vs bc if u are not sure of interest in future	AB Calc is 1 semester of college calculus over the school year and BC Calc is 2 semesters of college calculus over the year. So BC covers more material and goes at a faster pace and is more challenging. Students in AP Calculus usually take Honors PreCalculus in 11th grade and depending on their performance and interest, they can decide between the 2 Calculus classes.
19	Is statistics a pre-requisite for AP Stats?	It is not. In fact, most take one or the other. The only prerequisite is Algebra 2
20	Is statistics a pre-requisite for AP Stats?	^^True. AP Statistics is really a senior class so if you have a rising junior, they can take Honors Stat and then AP Stat. Some students who know they are taking IB math as 12th graders do take AP Stat in 11th grade to get a good foundation for their Internal Assessment.
21	Is there something to help decide between the different calculus choices (AB, BC etc)	AB Calc is 1 semester of college calculus over the school year and BC Calc is 2 semesters of college calculus over the year. So BC covers more material and goes at a faster pace and is more challenging. Students in AP Calculus usually take Honors PreCalculus in 11th grade and depending on their performance and interest, they can decide between the 2 Calculus classes. PreCalculus teachers can help make the decision!
22	re science - is there ever any discussion of providing a "mid level" science course. Right now students have the hyper fast Honors, or they have the much more slow/remedial on level.	We are only able to offer two levels, but thank you for the feedback. Please feel free to contact me to discuss your concerns further.
23	can a student who is taking pre-calc in 11th grade take the physics course in 12th instead of 11th?	Yes
24	If u enter ib program is it ok to not take physics	Students are not required to take physics as their third science. An AP or IB science in 11th grade, meets that third science requirement for MD
25	In cases of IB HL classes which have prerequisites, can the student take the HL class in the same year with the prerequisite, or the prerequisite course needs to have been completed in 10th grade? (specific example is IB Physics HL which has a pre-calculus requirement. Can the student register for Physics HL and Pre-calculus in 11th grade?)	There are no pre-requisites for any IB course. Students who take IB Physics usually have a strong background in calculus but that is not a pre-requisite.
26	For Ms. Gallagher... for a rising 11th who struggled with Hon Pre-Calc in 10th and switched to on-level Calc, but is very interested in STEM field, which course would you recommend?	I would ask their math teach (Decarolis or Pascale) but here is my input. They can take Honors Calculus in 11th grade and then AP Calculus in 12th grade. That way they get a Calculus foundation in 11th grade (as well as a review of Algerba 2/PreCalculus) and then the chance to take AP Calculus in 12th grade.
27	is Honors Physics or Honors Astronoy Physics the on level? Apologies, that was a bit confusing.	Honors Physics is one class and Astronomy is the on-level class
28	Can a student take Honors Physics over the summer and then AP Physics C in junior year?	Yes, possibly. There is also a math prerequisite. Have the student contact me to talk it through.
29	can a 11th grader take forensics?	They can. But this would be an elective and would not count towards the third year of science
30	@mrs Gallagher, isn't it redundant to take Hon Stat and then AP Stat?	Yes. The pre requesite for AP stat is Algebra 2, not stat. Students take one stat or the other
31	@mrs Gallagher, isn't it redundant to take Hon Stat and then AP Stat?	Well...yes and no. Many 11th graders take Honors Stat after Algebra 2. They have never taken an AP or Honors math class before. So taking Honors Stat before taking AP Stat is very helpful. The curriculums are simialr but Honors Stat gives a more basic understanding and then the following year in AP Stat is taught at a deeper level and there are 4 additonal chapters to cover.
32	Did you say that physics is a 2 period class?	No, all physics courses are one period. AP Bio and AP Chem are double period.
33	Just to clarify, what is the AP PHYSICS PRE-reqs? Thank you !	Honors Physics and Calc AB (Calc BC can be a corequisite)
34	If you take IB courses, like IB History, versus AP History, do you get college credit?	Students can earn college credit for both AP and IB courses.
35	What are the requirements to obtain an IB degree?	Ms. Smithson will be talking about the IB Diploma later in this presentation.
36	A college advising meeting last night seemed to favor and recommend IB over AP. If you are student who is drawn to engineering and STEM it seems like AP is better route. How can a student take a STEM/Engineering and also get IB diploma?	Students are able to and have done both through careful selection of courses.

Ms. Smithson and I often work collaboratively to find a path forward for our students who are interested in both areas. Please feel free to reach out to one or both of us to discuss what this may look like for your student.
38	Is physics recommended for most colleges? Or if they just did AP env science junior then AP bio senior would that be ok?	Most colleges do like to see physics. It does depend on the specific college and major.
39	Is there any way that the AP Java Programming class can count for the tech credit?	Not to my knowledge at this time, but if you can send me a follow up email I will review the state documents and can provide you with additional information regarding the technoloogy education requirements.
40	Can a student take Programming 3 and Programming 1 same year?	Technically yes, but it would not be something that I would recommend unless a student has already taken AP Java. Programming 3 is advanced Java and without that foundation students would not be prepared for the coursework.
41	For B Slade and Dr McDonald, yes about a middle science class. Many students who had not completed Alg 2 in 9th grade really could have used another Chemistry class this year.	Thank you for this feedback. We will continue to examine more ways to support students in science courses.
