28Electronic Medical Records in Africa
There are over 100,000 hospitals across Africa serving 1.26 billion people. Most of the records for over a trillion patient-doctor interactions are largely paper-based. Patients walk miles carrying handwritten lab orders across the hospital; patients deteriorate on pointless queues; and urgent life-saving surgeries are delayed because of missing charts. These patients and doctors shop online, bank online and tweet on-the-go but their healthcare remains antiquated and frustrating. Electronic records will enable online scheduling, online payments, quality reporting, epidemic prediction, credible research, and transparency for reliable feedback on the billions of dollars Africa receives in aid each year. Data streams will also open up new markets for technology solutions and jobs across pharma, medical devices and diagnostics.

However software and infrastructure costs are prohibitive. We need an affordable EMR designed for African hospitals (UI/UX), an affordable way to provide reliable internet to a hospital spanning 0.25sq miles, affordable devices on which the application would run, and an affordable renewable energy system that can power the devices. The solution should be scalable across several large hospitals making the unit cost to each patient bearable. A recent survey showed that adoption could explode if the price point was low enough.

Empower parents by helping us gain new, actionable insights into a child's day
The Starling currently measures the quantity of words a child is exposed to. How can we use other data from the Starling to gain new insights into a child’s day? In addition to word count data, the Starling tracks accelerometer data and light sensor data. We can also track when a Starling is charging, and when the button on the Starling is pressed.

35Pediatric HIV/Data Visualization Game
HIV affects approximately 2 million children worldwide, and there is a significant need to help pediatric HIV patients visualize their treatment progress. By creating an interactive game, we can help patients track their CDC4 counts and viral load, increase adherence to medication protocols, and allow pediatric patients to be more involved in their own care.

Empower patients to prevent and/or reverse autoimmune diseases by matching and/or engaging them to reduce inflammation & health care costs by improving their lifestyles via relaxation techniques (e.g., meditation, tai chi, yoga)
Autoimmune diseases (AD) occur when your body makes a mistake and attacks its own healthy tissue due to disruptions in genetics, environmental triggers, and terrain (e.g., sleeping and eating habits, exercise routines, stress management). When this happens, you develop one or more of 80 chronic diseases (e.g., type 1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis) that can expensive to treat. One in five Americans (e.g., 20% of the population, 50 million people, 80% women) suffer from this invisible and growing epidemic. When AD happens, it is among the 10 leading causes of death for women.

A majority of these diseases can be prevented and reversed with relaxation-response techniques (e.g., meditation, yoga, prayer, tai chi) that could reduce the need for health care services by 43 percent, according to a Harvard-affiliated study. (Researchers discovered that the chemicals released by 500 genes from meditation are the ones that keep away inflammation, which is what drives all chronic diseases.)

We need a way to empower patients of AD to improve their lifestyles in order to reduce long-term complications and healthcare costs.

Improving design of VP shunts in pediatric patients
Little advancements have been made in the design of VP shunts. For a number of children, these shunts are critical for their viability b/c they ensure proper flow of CSF and prevent hydrocephalus. I'm interested in integrating sensor technology and improving the mechanical design of these shunts to be able to accurately and immediately detect when shunts are not functioning properly and prevent frequent revisions.

A way to provide information or mental support for patient to relieve their stress.
People never prepare for being sick. However, lives change a lot after disease. You have medicine to take, therapy to do, bills to pay, and many other instructions to follow. Especially in some severe diseases, it's overwhelming for patients who never have those experiences before. Care providers can only provide limited help because they are not patients so they don't really understand what they need. Family or friends are not good resources for help either because patients usually don't want to depend on others too much. However, the information they need is hard to search online by themselves. They usually get the help they need step by step very slowly by talking to people one by one. There should be a better way for patients who have same issue to share information and support each other.
