Methodology:
21
Cities were chosen based on the biggest commuter cities using the 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard by INRIX, based on the average number of hours lost to traffic congestion
22
dataset here: https://inrix.com/scorecard/
23
24
Average number of hours lost to traffic conjection was gathered using the 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard by INRIX: https://inrix.com/scorecard/
25
26
Average train costs for commuters were gathered using data from the Trainline
27
28
Average train rail card costs were gathered using National Rail looking at 26-30 railcards
29
30
Average time spent commuting was compiled using the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Travel to Work Survey 2022: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-travel-survey-statistics#national-travel-survey-data-tables

31
% of workers travelling to work by car gathered using the Government website: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/transport-statistics-great-britain-2022/transport-statistics-great-britain-2022-domestic-travel#:~:text=The%20average%20usual%20commuting%20time,15%20minutes%20for%20walking

33
Avg salaries were gathered using Glassdoor: https://www.glassdoor.com/research/uk-local-employee-analysis-2023
34
35
The average amount of money spent on petrol per commuter for the UK cities is based on data from Startups.co.uk
36
37
The ranking is based on a weighted average of the following factors:

Average number of hours lost to traffic congestion
Average time spent commuting
Average train costs for commuters
Percentage of workers travelling to work by car
Average salaries
The weights for each factor were chosen based on their relative importance in determining the cost and time of a commute. For example, the average number of hours lost to traffic congestion was given a higher weight than the percentage of workers travelling to work by car, because traffic congestion is a major factor in determining the cost and time of a commute.
38
39
To calculate the average time spent commuting per year in days, the following formula was used:
40
41
Average time spent commuting (per year) = Average time spent commuting (per day) * 365 days
42
43
For example, to calculate the average time spent commuting per year for London commuters, the following formula was used:
44
45
Average time spent commuting (per year) = 3:57 hours/day * 365 days/year = 19.5 days
