Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. In this Unit, students write in their engineering notebooks to record coordinate points, take notes on information in the Lessons, and reflect on their learning in the Mid-Unit and Wrap-Up Reflections. They use their notes to inform class discussions in small and large groups, where they are expected to speak clearly to articulate their points and respond to questions.

Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening and the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression. In this Unit, students are presented with new vocabulary on the Introduction page. They use these domain-specific words and phrases as they move through the Unit including in conversation with group-members and the educator, and in their engineering notebook.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) English Language Arts - Science and Technical Subjects9-10CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.4Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 9-10 texts and topics.Students learn different terms throughout the Unit that are specific to the VEX CTE Workcell Kit and industrial robotics. They use those terms in their engineering notebook and through conversations with their group members and educator.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) English Language Arts - Science and Technical Subjects9-10CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.5Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts in a text, including relationships among key terms. In this Unit, students learn about workcell automation and elements of the VEX CTE Workcell Kit, and how they connect to one another. For instance, students learn about real world terminology, like programmable logic controller (PLC), and connect that to their own CTE build as they learn about how the Brain serves as the PLC for their workcell.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Mathematics K-12CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.In this Unit, students are presented with activities at the end of each Lesson. They must read and understand the problem and then work to solve the activity using the information learned throughout the Lesson. This is replicated in the Putting It All Together activity where students must make sense of the goal of the activity and work with their group in order to solve the activity.
9
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Mathematics K-12CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4Model with mathematics. The 6-Axis Robotic Arm models industrial robotic arms, and moves within the Cartesian coordinate system. Students apply the cartesian coordinate system to move the 6-Axis Arm to various coordinate locations in order to move Disks to complete a challenge. Students must consider movement along the x, y, and z-axes to complete the task effectively.
10
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Mathematics K-12CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5Use appropriate tools strategically.Students learn how to download and run VEXcode projects on the EXP Brain, using the Brain as the programmable logic controller (PLC) for the workcell.

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)Empowered Learnern/a1.1dStudents understand fundamental concepts of technology operations; demonstrate the ability to choose, use, and troubleshoot current technologies; and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies. Students learn about industrial robotics and how they apply to their everyday lives. They are introduced to the idea of a programmable logic controller (PLC), and learn how the Brain functions as a PLC on their Workcell build. Students also learn how to open, download, and run projects on the Brain in order to complete the task of moving Disks to pallets on the Tile.
12
International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)Knowledge Constructorn/a1.3dStudents build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories, and pursuing answers and solutions. Students learn about how workcells, and PLCs in particular, function within automated factories. They explore how the Brain in the CTE Workcell functions as a PLC, and use the Brain in order to run projects to move Disks to the pallets with the 6-Axis Arm.
13
International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)Knowledge Constructorn/a1.4dStudents exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance and the capacity to work with open-ended problems. In the Putting It All Together activity, students are presented with the challenge of coding the 6-Axis Arm to move four Disks to two pallets. They make decisions with their groups to determine how they will complete the activity using information and skills gained during the Unit.
14
International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)Knowledge Constructorn/a1.5dStudents understand how automation works and use algorithmic thinking to develop a sequence of steps to create and test automated solutions.Students learn about factory automation, and how components like the programmable logic controller (PLC) function to automate systems. They use the Brain as the PLC of the CTE Workcell, and plan, create, and test an automated solution to move multiple Disks to the pallets on the Tile.
