Honors Reading Guidelines and Instructions
10
11
12
It is our hope and prayer that both students and families who participate in this program will discover the riches of reading what Charlotte Mason called "living books - those that we should not miss in order to enrich our lives." Living books are part of each grade's curriculum. However, students who successfully complete this program are reading additional living books beyond what the school requires as part of regular course work. Students who complete the grade's program requirements will be recognized each year at our closing Honors Day Program. Instructions for those students who need accommodations are on the second tab located at the bottom of the document.

14
Below are some specific guidelines and distinctives of the program:
15
16
1. This program is for students in Kindergarten - 5th grade and runs from June 1st to May 1st. All verification forms must be signed and turned into the school librarian by May 1st to be considered for Honors Day recognition.
17
2. There will be two awards for 3rd - 5th Grades: Gold and Silver. There will be three awards for Kindergarten - 2nd Grades: Gold, Silver and Bronze
18
3. Lists are divided by grade levels and can be found on the Silverdale Parent Portal. Criteria for each grade level are posted at the top of each list.
19
4. Students may read books above their grade level but not below it unless they have an ISP on file at SBA and fill out an Accommodations form. If a student chooses to read the entire list from the grade level above, they will be awarded according to that grade level's requirements.
20
5. The list is intentionally exact which means that the title listed including illustrator is the only one that counts. Other titles by the same author do not count unless that author is lited on the author list. In all cases, whether reading from the title list, author list, or series list, no more than three titles by one author can count.
21
6. To qualify for an award, one of the books must be read aloud as a family. In Kindergarten, first and second grades, a family read aloud is encouraged; however, parent to child is acceptable. We suggest that books from the oldest child's list be the family read aloud to qualify for each student in the family.
22
7. All titles assume the unabridged version unless otherwise specified.
23
8. Book text must be read by the student. We do not count listening to a recording of a book unless the student has an ISP on file at SBA stating this particular reading issue. Even with the exception, the text is read simultaneously while listening to the recording.
24
9. The book lists are revised annually. Parents may submit book titles to be considered as additions by sending an email to the librarian, lpike@silverdaleba.org, with title and author anda brief description of the living ideas you found beneficial in the book. However, there will be no approval of titles after the list has been submitted.
25
10.Though recognition will be given to students who reach the mark, we encourage the reading effort to be made for enjoyment and inspiration, not solely for the prize.

Instructions for Completing the Form
28
29
Each grade list should be printed out as a form. There is a check list column where you can record the date the book was read. For Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, there is an additional column where you can also record whether the parent or child read the book. Grades 3-5 should always use "S" in the P/S column to update the books read count.
30
31
All forms must be submitted as a hardcopy. No electronic versions will be accepted. The spreadsheet is for your convenience in keeping track of the books your child is reading. Please make sure and fill out the information at the top of the form before turning it in so we can make sure and give credit to your child.
32
33
If you have questions along the way, please feel free to contact the librarian at lpike@silverdaleba.org, for guidance. Many books are carried in our library but unfortunately not all are on our shelves. It is ou goal to carry all volumes eventually. Books can be checked out of a public library and purchased on Amazon or other online booksellers.
