| Welcome to the (new and improved) FFXIV flower language spreadsheet. The previous ver. was made in order to write my ThanUri fanfic, "Words of a Flower" with limited excel/sheets experience.
| You are welcome to use this as a source and share it around (encouraged, even!). I would appreciate credit. You can find me on Ao3 and Bluesky as Ann0yance. Tumblr is sa8oteur.
| Some disclaimers: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. I am not an expert in flower language, nor is anyone; it's kind of made up. Metaphors are like that. This is just for fun. I'm told flower shops don't even care about this stuff anymore. What a shame!
| 2. Flower language and symbology differs by culture, and unfortunately most of my sources are from Euro-American views. I tried to include other cultural sources as I could. Sometimes it's vague.
| This wasn't on purpose by any means. Primarily, I am only fluent in English, so my sources also are in English. Feel free to let me know of relevant cultural differences and sources! I'd love to know!
| Do not use this sheet as any kind of authority to argue with people. This is for you to pick and choose meanings that speak to you based on the lists I managed to find.
| 3. For scale, I am limiting this sheet to flowers only found within FFXIV, updating as quickly as possible with patch updates. If I did every flower in existence, we'd be here all day.
| Comments are turned on, so if you see a mistake, have suggestions or questions, feel free to let me know. I'm going to keep updating this as much as possible.
| 4. I will try to compile my sources to the best of my ability, you can find them on the Sources tab at the bottom of the screen. For brevity, not all of my sources were included; if you need to know, I'll track it down again.
| Speculation is always warranted, as flower language is ultimately made up by those around the flower in some significant way. Some sources may need more speculation than others.
| 5. Flowers are a field of study in their own right and I have a BA in Creative Writing (and got a B in my one Biology class I had to take.) Some of this will be a little fuzzy in scientific accuracy.
| 6. I am very sorry, this is likely going to look bad on mobile. There's nothing I can do about that to my knowledge. This thing is a behemoth and may take time to load fully. I'm very sorry.
| 7. This thing is huge. Try to search to find terms that speak to you. "Zodiac" "Greek" "Passion" "Royalty" "Tea" or specific flowers you like, things like that. Or endlessly scroll, that works, too!
| I tried to have as much relevant information for FFXIV writers/RPers for their WoLs, like Greek interpretations for people's Azem/Ancients and flowers they may like.
| 8. Huge thank you to those who helped with this project, even as a cheerleader. I really needed it. Thank you to everyone who has shared it and said kind words. I also needed that.

| Notes about each column:
| In-game names have been condensed (Ex: types of lavender or mistletoe) for scale. Housing flowers all have individual colors so I separated them. But the "Rainbow" variation is skipped. Its spot is replaced with additional info. | I did my best to find a similar IRL flower if there was not a direct real life comparison by name. I tried to stay within the confines of the inspired areas for its IRL comparison. Feel free to suggest others if you disagree. | Combined as much flower language/symbolism as I could find per flower. Some don't exist, some don't have flower language (for various reasons), some have so many I had to be brief. If I list meanings as "X, y; z. A, b." the period denotes separate sources, commas and semi-colons mean it's from the same source. Tried to find as many sources as I could. Pick and choose your meanings as you see fit. Bold interpretations are speculation/need fact checking, etc. and are a WIP. | IRL flower used as much as possible. Images/icons in game cannot always be trusted. In-game will be used if IRL doesn't exist. If image is incorrect or should be removed, let me know. | Will include any IRL fun facts I found in my research along with the in-game description when applicable. Many vase-able flowers have pink variations IRL, and meanings of these are included in their red category. In-game descriptions for Skybuilders varieties, when applicable, will be picked by the most relevant info, as most of them are done as jokes and not really useful. Update 6/15/2025: Search "Tea:" to find any flowers listed that can be turned into teas. Added relevant notes as I can find them. (Please do your own research before eating random plants, please!!) | Now with actual locations! Not all of these are gatherable (and there are multiple kinds sometimes) but it helps add to the lore so I included it to the best of my ability. Some are chaotic and I am so sorry. | Some flowers and the time of their addition can be linked to the MSQ, like Sunflowers for Dawntrail, for example. Some are inspired by the areas they are found in, so can add lore to that expansion.
