Presently, I coordinate a violence prevention programme in the Kenya Girl Guides Association supported by UN Women. I have just finished my term serving in the World Health Organization - Violence Prevention Alliance as a participant. My committment to peace and conflict resolution to transformation grew to a higher level having been appointed Kenya's official youth delegate to the Horn of Africa Youth Form in Djibouti 2010. This was important because I addressed the impact of conflict in the lives of young people in the region. Being the only female delegate, I was privilaged to speak out against conflict because of the impact it has in the lives of womena nd girls. I also increased advocacy on non-violence conflict resolution strategies during the International Youth Violence Prevention Conference in Dar es Salaam August 2012 and the 3rd Pan-African Youth Leadership Summiti in Ouagadougou, December 2012. My local organization, Kenya Girl Guides Association has demonstrated its commitment to peace and conflict transformation through a Peace Educationa Programme implemented in the Dadaab Refugee Camp. As a Post2015 Ambassador for my organization, I look forward to ensuring peace and conflict resolution strategies such as good governance, respect for human rights and democracy are included in the next development agenda. This includes championing non-violent means to prevent or resolve conflicts in Africa. | yvonnea@kgga.co.ke | Yvonne AKoth | Yes | The World Association of Girl Guide and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is the biggest organization with more than 10 million members advocating for the needs of girls and young women. WAGGGS focus has always been on gender equality and women empowerment, championing the rights of girls to access education, health care, economic empowerment opportunities, a life free of violence, women and leadership etc. I would like to be a member of this committee because I will bring in relevant expertise and experiences having worked for womens organizations for the past 7 years. As a representative of WAGGGS, I have had the opportunity to implement sexual and reproductive health programmes, gender based violence programmes and programmes on women and leadership in the Kenya Girl Guides Association. This includes representing the needs of women and girls in local and international platforms such as the World AIDS Campaign (WAC) and UNDP CSO consultation on HIV/AIDS and the Millenium Development Goals among other key platforms. Having worked at a regional level especially in the socio-cultural and economic aspect on HIV in the lives of girls and young women in Africa, I believe gender equality in totality will put an end to major obstacles impeding the growth of girls and young women in Africa. Participating in this committee will accord me the opportunity to share my experiences over the years on the role of women in development. I will also join fellow committee members to ensure gender equality is placed at the forefront of the next Post2015 Development Agenda. | yvonnea@kgga.co.ke | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
