Industrial Management
Professional book
Introduction and goals of the book.- Genesis, history and standards.- FMEA: The conceptual model.- FMEA: The operational-process aspect.- The product/process interface.- Advanced tools.- Final considerations and concluding remarks.
Is it possible to approach FMEA scientifically and develop a precise and rigorous conceptual model that can serve as a solid, formal basis for developing operational procedures for equally precise and rigorous FMEA? This professional book proposes such a conceptual model and brings it to life with nine objects, properties, and interactions. The procedures based on the model (design and process FMEA) and their logical composition are presented in an easy-to-understand manner. Finally, a mathematical model for the objective evaluation of the risk parameters “occurrence” and “detection” is presented, based on specifically formulated vector indicators instead of the classic evaluation tables. The entire presentation is supported by the FMEA software APIS-IQ.

Risk assessment methods for mechanical stability of submarine wellheads in deepwater drilling.- Risk assessment methods for well control during gas kick in deepwater drilling.- Risk assessment methods for natural gas hydrate generation in wellbore during deepwater drilling.- Risk assessment methods for casing program in deepwater drilling.
This book divides the wellbore into two parts based on the characteristics of deepwater drilling engineering: the section from sea level to the subsea wellhead and the section below the mud line. Above the subsea wellhead is connected a blowout preventer and a long riser, while below is a series of casings, causing the subsea wellhead to bear stress from both the upper and lower parts simultaneously, posing a risk of instability in a complex stress environment; Although the construction below the mud line in deepwater drilling is not significantly different from land drilling, there are still challenges such as deep water depth, low temperature, narrow safety density window, shallow geological hazards, natural gas hydrates, and difficulty in determining drilling geological parameters, which greatly increase the risk of drilling engineering. On the basis of systematically explaining the basic theories and methods of the subsea wellhead mechanical stability, wellbore temperature and pressure field calculation during gas kick, prediction of natural gas hydrate generation, and casing program design method and so on, this book analyzes those with higher risks such as wellhead instability, gas kick and blowout, gas hydrate generation and casing program design. And the characteristics and influence rules of uncertain parameters and empirical coefficients are analyzed emphatically by using methods such as probability statistics, and the risk assessment methods of deepwater drilling related to the wellhead and wellbore safety which consider the uncertain parameters are established. This will be of great significance for risk prevention and control in deepwater drilling, optimizing deepwater drilling design and construction plans, improving the lifespan and investment returns of deepwater oil and gas wells, and promoting the development of deepwater drilling technology.

Introduction.- Fractional-order Activation Functions.- Fractional-order Neural Networks.- Forecasting of Texas Wind Turbines’ Generated Power.- Forecasting of Jeju Islands Wind Turbines’ Generated Power.- Forecasting of Renewable Energy Using Fractional-Order Neural Networks.- Fractional Feedforward Neural Network-Based Smart Grid Stability Prediction Model.
This book suggests the development of single and multi-layer fractional-order neural networks that incorporate fractional-order activation functions derived using fractional-order derivatives. Activation functions are essential in neural networks as they introduce nonlinearity, enabling the models to learn complex patterns in data. However, traditional activation functions have limitations such as non-differentiability, vanishing gradient problems, and inactive neurons at negative inputs, which can affect the performance of neural networks, especially for tasks involving intricate nonlinear dynamics. To address these issues, fractional-order derivatives from fractional calculus have been proposed. These derivatives can model complex systems with non-local or non-Markovian behavior. The aim is to improve wind power prediction accuracy using datasets from the Texas wind turbine and Jeju Island wind farm under various scenarios. The book explores the advantages of fractional-order activation functions in terms of robustness, faster convergence, and greater flexibility in hyper-parameter tuning. It includes a comparative analysis of single and multi-layer fractional-order neural networks versus conventional neural networks, assessing their performance based on metrics such as mean square error and coefficient of determination. The impact of using machine learning models to impute missing data on the performance of networks is also discussed. This book demonstrates the potential of fractional-order activation functions to enhance neural network models, particularly in predicting chaotic time series. The findings suggest that fractional-order activation functions can significantly improve accuracy and performance, emphasizing the importance of advancing activation function design in neural network analysis. Additionally, the book is a valuable teaching and learning resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students conducting research in this field.

This book introduces the laser hybrid additive manufacturing technology (LHAM) with alternately thermal and mechanical effects for the high-performance manufacturing of key components. Metal additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have made considerable progress in the basic theoretical field since its invention in the 1970s. However, there are still some difficulties in the coordinated control of the structure and performance, containing the challenges of “structure control” against deformation and cracking of the formed metallic components incurred by internal stress and “performance control” against poor fatigue property of formed metallic components incurred by metallurgical defects. This book surveys the most relevant papers about the influence of laser shock wave on the microstructural evolution, residual stress, metallurgical defect, and mechanical properties that have become the foundation to elucidate the principles and effects of LHAM technology. This book is separated into four parts to fully present the LHAM technology. The first part reviews the background of LHAM technology. The second part explains the theoretical basis of the thermal effects of laser additive manufacturing (LAM) and mechanical effects of laser shock peening (LSP). The other two parts specifically describe the microstructural evolution, residual stress, metallurgical defect, and mechanical properties using LHAM technology. This book benefits the audience in the field of mechanical engineering and materials sciences, since LHAM technology is suitable for the manufacturing and applications of the key components of aero-engine. The analysis in the book helps the audience deeply understand the mechanism of LHAM technology. The authors’ unique thinking about LHAM technology also runs through the book, which may enlighten the audience to further develop LHAM technology.

This book entitled Mechanics of Elastic Solids is written as a textbook of the course “Elasticity” or “Theory of Elasticity” or “Elasticity Mechanics” for relevant engineering majors. It can also be used as a professional book for relevant technical persons. It mainly introduces elasticity theory, including stress analysis, deformation analysis, constitutive relations, elasticity model construction for actual problems, solutions for infinitesimal plane stress and strain problems, three-dimensional problems, multiphysics field problems, variation principle in elasticity, thin plate, and cylindrical shells. The rapid and continuous advancements in numerical methods and computer power have diminished the significance of certain analytical solutions in elasticity problems.. Therefore, this book simplifies some traditional contents such as the solution of plane problems and twist of cylinder. Instead, some new topics which are important for real-world problems are introduced, such as the accurate description of finite deformation, constitutive equations for small strain but large rotation problems, hyperelasticity, procedural steps and general methodologies for model construction of real-world problems, and multiphysics field problems. A plenty of examples is prepared in this book for comprehensive understanding.

Modelling, Reductionism and the Implications for Digital Twins.- Nonlinear normal modes as invariant manifolds for model order reduction.- The Direct Parametrization of Invariant Manifolds applied to model order reduction of microstructures.- Understanding, computing and identifying the nonlinear dynamics of elastic and piezoelectric structures thanks to nonlinear modes.
The book presents reduction methods that are using tools from dynamical systems theory in order to provide accurate models for nonlinear dynamical solutions occurring in mechanical systems featuring either smooth or non smooth nonlinearities. The cornerstone of the chapters is the use of methods defined in the framework of the invariant manifold theory for nonlinear systems, which allows definitions of efficient methods generating the most parsimonious nonlinear models having minimal dimension, and reproducing the dynamics of the full system under generic assumptions. Emphasis is put on the development of direct computational methods for finite element structures. Once the reduced order model obtained, numerical and analytical methods are detailed in order to get a complete picture of the dynamical solutions of the system in terms of stability and bifurcation. Applications from the MEMS and aerospace industry are covered and analyzed. Geometric nonlinearity, friction nonlinearity and contacts in jointed structures, detection and use of internal resonance, electromechanical and piezoelectric coupling with passive control, parametric driving are surveyed as key applications. The connection to digital twins is reviewed in a general manner, opening the door to the efficient use of invariant manifold theory for nonlinear analysis, design and control of engineering structures.

Kaburaki, Nambu and the Japanese school .- Chapter 5. Aerosols and Atmospheric Physics .- Chapter 6. Thermal Confinement.- Chapter 7. Look into the future.
This book originated from seminars given at the Institute of Nuclear Energy Technology (INET) of Tsinghua University, China, by the author in 1999. The courses gave graduate students a basic understanding of numerical techniques that would enable them to deal with problems of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and of molecular dynamics at research level. In subsequent years the lecture notes have been re-organized and implemented for students of atmospheric sciences of the Physics Department of the University of Ferrara, Italy. The lecture notes are divided into eight chapters, where some chapters are characterized by a scholastic approach. Specifically, Chapter 1 describes the theoretical basis of molecular dynamics, Chapter 2 gives examples of applications, like the Bénard problem; and Chapter 3 presents a summary of applications of DLA (Diffusion Limited Aggregation). The remainder of the book follows a less conventional approach, mainly informed by the author’s experience in the development of computer programs and in teaching. Chapter 4 is dedicated to a comparison of traditional and advanced methods of analysing nuclear safety problems in thermal and fast reactors, Chapter 5 concerns simulation of thermophoresis and aerosol displacement in atmospheric physics, and Chapter 6 discusses thermal confinement of cosmic particles due to thermophoretic forces in space domain. Addressing the recognized difficulty of proceeding from the theoretical formulations found in textbooks to properly working computer programs, and the typically large gap between the theoretical foundation and the final result, Molecular Dynamics - Theory and Applications is ideal for graduate level researchers and practitioners working in the development of codes for simulating physical problems.

This book is for students, teachers, and practicing engineers and describes an industrial approach to gas turbine engine simulation, mainly for aircraft propulsion. The principles of performance model creation are covered, and the viability and accuracy of model-based performance analyses are demonstrated by their application to real-world examples, where measured data are scarce. Clear distinctions are made between design and off-design models, the keys to success being the recognition of the importance of scaling and validating compressor and turbine maps. This topic is discussed in more detail than in other sources. New descriptions of turbomachinery basics are offered, and it is shown how velocity diagrams can capture the quality of a compressor or turbine stage and the effects of changes. Non-dimensional performance is explained in an unusual way, without referring to higher mathematics. The influence of inlet flow distortion and heat transfer on engine operability during transient operation is also characterized. This second edition contains new material about engine starting and windmilling, supported by how to extend existing compressor and turbine maps down to speeds as low as 1%. Unique material on map interpretation is included. The design and operation of hybrid propulsion systems are also addressed. Not only a valuable engineering textbook but also a good read!

Introduction.- Fixturing Scheme and Process Parameters Optimization.- Evaluation and Modeling of Tool Marks in Face Milling Processes.- Profile monitoring and Surface Classification.- Evaluation and Control of Sealing performance.- State Space Modeling and Monitoring of Variation Propagation.- Tolerance Analysis and Variation Management.- Markov Modeling and Analysis of Variation Propagation.
This book investigates quality control methods for variable stiffness structured workpiece. With the development of modern manufacturing industries, more and more workpieces with complex geometries are being designed and manufactured. The definition of variable stiffness structured workpieces includes three key features: multiple geometrical features, multiple geometrical tolerance constraints, and multistage manufacturing processes (denoted as 3M features). The variable stiffness structured workpieces have multiple geometrical features (planar surfaces, cylindrical surfaces, cone surfaces, sphere surfaces, freeform surfaces, etc.) with multiple geometric tolerance constraints (flatness, waviness, roughness, roundness, cylindrical degree, etc.) and are manufactured by multiple manufacturing processes. The 3M features of variable stiffness structured workpieces bring challenges for products’ quality evaluation and quality control. The quality propagation of multiple quality characteristics through multiple manufacturing processes is complicated. The multiscale geometrical specifications influence the final functions of products in different ways. And the varied stiffness problem brought by complex geometry structure of the workpieces also makes the manufactured surface quality hard to control. The book is intended for undergraduate, graduate students, and researchers who are interested in developments of quality control methods and applications.

In the assessment of rolling bearing conditions, there is a wide user base in the so-called Level 1 (using characteristic value monitoring) for the interpretation of simple trend evaluations of broadband and narrowband characteristic values from various spectra. Often, the technical background of engineers and technicians is insufficient, especially for preventive vibration diagnosis in fault detection and damage extent assessment. This is where the book series "Introduction to Machine Diagnosis" and this volume come in. From the physical background to practical application, fundamentals and experiences are presented in an easily understandable manner and illustrated with practical examples. To reliably carry out, accompany, or communicate the findings of a standard rolling bearing diagnosis, the main target group at Level 1 (broadband and narrowband monitoring and trend analysis) and Level 2 (signal analysis) are also provided with practical "fault and damage patterns" and remedies. The content has already been introduced for rolling bearing diagnosis in VDI 3832; the author significantly contributed to the development of this guideline as the chairman. The in-depth, comprehensive diagnosis of rolling bearings, from the causative rolling bearing fault through the "initial damage to the root cause" and the treatment of practical fault sources to their genuine prevention, are covered in this volume.

This book introduces recent developments and trends of S-T abnormality diagnosis for industrial distributed parameter systems (DPSs). As a typical representative of industrial processes, DPSs widely exist in both process and discrete manufacturing and operations, such as the snap curing oven in chip manufacturing, the tubular reactor in chemical manufacturing, the soft robots in special operations, etc. With the increasing development of industrial distributed parameter systems (especially the electrical vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles), spatio-temporal (S-T) abnormality diagnosis has become a pain in the neck and has attracted a great amount of attention in recent years. Moreover, the rapid development of machine learning and big data techniques has shed new insights on data-driven fault diagnosis and promoted the enthusiasm for studying the industrial distributed parameter systems. However, nearly no book has addressed this issue well and most existing research only consider traditional actuator/sensor fault while neglecting the spatio-temporal distributed characteristic of abnormality for DPSs.  The main contents of this book include: 1) Model-based abnormality diagnosis and identification for completely-known industrial DPSs (“white box”); 2) Combined model-based and data-driven abnormality detection and localization for partially-known industrial DPSs (“grey box”); 3) Purely data-driven modeling and diagnosis for completely-unknown DPSs(“black box”). In conclusion, this book summarizes the authors’ works on both model-based and data-driven perspectives for S-T abnormality diagnosis of industrial DPSs. To be more precise, this book mainly focuses on the following challenges: space-time couple characteristics, limited sensing in space, and the dynamically varying abnormality in space. This book aims at post-graduate students, researchers, and engineers with background knowledge of industrial systems modeling and monitoring. Interesting readers can obtain state-of-the-art methods systematically in the last 5 years and have a general overview of recent developments and the future direction of this specific research field.

Introduction.- The Ultrasonic Methodology Development for Liquid-Particle Flow.- Complementary Research.- Concluding Remarks.- Programs for Time Series and Images in MATLAB.
This book describes in detail a research project dedicated to liquid-particle flow using ultrasound techniques. The project consists of theoretical, experimental, data science, finite element modeling, mechanical design and project management components. The objective of the project was to develop the ultrasonic methodology for measurement and characterization of liquid flow containing solid particles, in online (real-time) measurement conditions. The project consists of primary and complementary studies. The primary studies comprise development of the ultrasonic methodology for the simultaneous measurement of the average particle concentration and flow speed parameters. The developed methodology is based on the ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy and the sound speed measurement methods, supported by data science programs. The complementary studies include acoustic streaming, designing a small-scale rotational test cell with an annular flow channel, testing it for various applications and characterization of the flow regimes. Flow speed measurements were performed using three methods: the ultrasonic transit-time difference, the cross-correlation of the backscattered from particles ultrasonic echoes, the particle image velocimetry. The research project described in this book was initiated thanks to successful collaboration between the University of Stavanger and Total E&P Norge AS, Norway (the last-mentioned has become TotalEnergies EP Norge AS). Valuable insights came from the Institute for Multiphase Flow Research (IMFT) in Toulouse, France. Valuable knowledgeable support was received from Dispersion Technology, Inc. in New York, USA. Guidance and assistance with the book publishing were received from Springer and Springer Nature.
