14 | CA | UCLA-Harbor | Very hands on - you see your own patients, do your own biopsies, write your own notes (all with supervision). You join didactics with residents and do some additional clinic time (rotators start the kodachrome discussions by describing each lesion, so study how to describe things and have a good idea of very general dermatology DDx) | They don't interview all rotators (even if you do well) - would not recommend if you have no ties to SoCal as they yield protect. 10-minute presentation at the end of the rotation may impact decision to interview you (very high stakes). You must do fingerprints in-person, preferably before the rotation, so plan on being in california some time before then. | Great rotation if your goal is to serve very underserved patients in a county hospital and get hands-on experience. Do not do this rotation if you have no ties to Cali unless you just want more experience and do not care about matching back there. | Accepted x3
15 | CA | UCSF | denied but this was weird < ?? | why?

17 | CO | Colorado | Never met the PD/APD/residents on their virtual rotation. It was just asynchronous didactics for two weeks with no benefit at all. | Virtual derm accepted x2 | <- what dates were these for? | anyone doing the research in-person? | anyone heard anything about the research elective? yes accepted for September < is it virtual? < yes
18 | CT | Connecticut | Great culture. Very hands on, oftentimes working directly with attendings. Lots of note writing, seeing patients independently and presenting | didn't get to know the residents very well because didn't work with them as much. One attending likes to keep med students late (think 7-8PM) | accepted x 2
19 | CT | Yale | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
20 | DC | GWU School of Medicine | Had a great experience. Was very hands on, and I got a publication and what I assume was a very strong letter from faculty here. Residents 10/10 and went out of their way to help me shine | Only two spots so despite getting an interview, it was stressful to know my chances of actually matching here were very slim | Accepted x2

39 | IL | Northwestern (Med-Derm) | This rotation is really well structured, and you get to engage with many of the faculty (if you do the general derm away rotation). Northwestern has a reputation for many years of not interviewing their away rotators or research fellows, but 2/2 away rotators that I know of recieved invitations to interview. You can be as hands off or hands on as you would like. They don't expect you to do procedures, but some attendings will let you if you are interested and ask. Same goes for seeing patients on your own. The residents will always offer to see the patients with you, but all of the faculty let you see patients on your own if you want to. Chicago is incredibly fun, and there is a lot to explore, but it is on the more expensive side. | If you do the general derm rotation, you will work only in outpatient settings. In their advanced derm rotation, you will do only inpatient settings, but you will work with far fewer faculty, which can be a disadvantage. I think that the general derm rotation structure made it harder to hang out with the residents, which I was a bit bummed out about because the residents were really kind and fun. | One of the most wonderful months of 4th year! Having never been exposed to a T10 derm program, I was nervous and expected it to be formal and rigid. However, everyone was so approachable and interested. There is a TON of teaching that goes on. Feel free to ask questions in the columns to the right if you are interested in apply for their away! < This is so good to hear! Which of the rotations did you apply for, when did you hear back, how did you prepare, and did you recieve an interview?! Sorry for all the questions, deciding aways rn and struggling with making a decision on where! Thank you!!!< I applied just to the clinical dermatology rotation, but I know others who did to the advanced one. I heard back kind of late actually like > 6weeks after I applied I think. And something really annoying about away rotation applications is that you have to accept/reject an offer within 1 week of getting it. Since theyre rolling acceptances, I decided to reject like 4 different away offers in the hopes that I would hear back from Northwestern. So there was a purgatory time where I didn't have an away offer and didn't know if I would regret rejecting aways. I think I went into my away with pretty strong clinical knowledge (had been shadowing in derm for like 4 years on and off), but definitely do the AAD basic derm curriculum at the very least. And yes I recieved an interview! | rejected for august-september spot (spots filled) | Accepted 9/27; Accepted 9/27 Inpatient

44 | IN | Indiana | Away rotation is structured for broad rather than consistent exposure with one faculty. Translates to difficulty with getting strong letters from faculty members. Rotation hasn't changed structure regardless of feedback in previous years. Few of the faculty are difficult to work with and get easily stressed at the busier clinic, easy to find them on rotation but for these keep presentations short (literally cut out hpi, physical exam, just give diagnosis). Others will like more detail. < prominent attending asked me if i knew how stupid I sounded during a patient presentation < difficult rotation in terms of working with many attendings with different teaching/presentation styles and in different clinics with different patient populations but I came out much stronger in derm because of it. I also had no issue getting a couple of LORs during this time < pretty hands on with biopsy experience at VA, Klenk doesnt let students do anything | < I second this < will also add program has significant workflow issues: one hospital controls most of resident salary but has less volume, so for around 30 patients for am and pm clinic total, there will be 6 residents each clinic. Other hospital with much more patient volume/complexity has less funding for resident salary, so there will be two residents covering this for am and then pm. Seems to contribute to a lot of resident and attending stress, residents stay very late to finish notes on these patients. Also contributes to residents being pulled off of Mohs and dermpath rotations to cover clinic at this busier hospital, so very little exposure to these areas, important for both boards and fellowship. < significant DEI issues, Also residents here do not have time to do significant research due to heavy clinic, also important for fellowship, most go into private practice in midwest | accepted

52 | MA | UMass | Pick your own clinic and disclipine every morning, daily noon didactics, just such a great and welcoming culture overall | You have read only EMR access as an away rotator which can get annoying | Fantastic rotation, best department culture I have seen in Derm | accepted | In person

56 | MI | Henry Ford | They LOVE to match away rotators because they are not technically linked to a home program (wayne state kinda). Very diverse clinical experience from pigmented lesions, photoderm, CTCL, HS, peds, MKTP, EPP, you'll see a TON of different stuff. Residents and attendings are super nice and will try to teach you as long as your present yourself as being well read and eager to learn. I think the best thing about this program is its culture and how friendly the attendings and residents are. | Do NOT expect much autonomy or hands-on experience typically. However, if you show you know what you're doing, you'll be given chances to independently see patients in some clinics. | Really great rotation. Ranked HF>a top 10 program because of my interactions with the residents/attendings. | accepted x1
57 | MI | Michigan | acceptedx2, deniedx1
58 | MI | St Joseph Mercy | Rotation was 1-week virtual. Essentially joined in on all the resident didactics along with a journal club (chance to present on a paper of your choosing) and several sessions with faculty, a 10min exit interview with the PD and lots of Q&As with current residents. They made a strong effort to have us involved, had senior residents call us to tell us more about the program, their experiences and answer questions. All the faculty and PD were very pleasant. Overall good experience but obviously with the caviat that it was virtual. | Did a virtual rotation this year. Wasn't too fond of it. About 10 Q&A sessions which got boring very fast as people started to run out of questions to ask and started asking cringy things in an effort to appear interested. Not a great experience. | Don't waste your time < I think it is well worth doing the elective as all 18 applicants invited for IV had attended one of the virtual electives. They were even able to accommodate me joining whenever I could throughout the week since I was on another rotation at the time. No penalty for missing sessions and still got the IV invite. | acceptedx4 | Was this recent? I contacted a week ago and had yet to set up auditions.
59 | MI | Beaumont Trenton | Only one attending really cares about medical students. The PD hyperfixates on certain people and will quite literally ignore the other medical students. Poor first year residents there look so fish out of water with no guidance. Also dangerous how much they let their residents do with absolutely no supervision. | You'll spend most of your time in one clinic.
60 | MI | Wayne State | Very chill. All shadowing. They will let you do stuff. Great culture. | No peds derm. They only interview people with a connection to Michigan. | rejected

62 | MN | Minnesota (Med/Derm) | Cold. You will work at the intern level. | Not a very good experience at all. PD and attendings all ignore med students/away rotators. | Accepted, denied | Has anyone heard back from the UofM on September rotation? | rotating 10/25

69 | NC | Wake Forest | can add one or two pubs to your belt with research rotation | Did NOT interview after completing away rotation, feldman letter useless for n = 1, in fact seemed to bring up passive aggressive energy from some interviewers | notes: does not interview all rotators, I did a virtual research rotation here, gave a signal, and published with the research team but was rejected. also n = 1 but some say letter from Feldman will help open doors, in my case did not, ended up with one interview from home program < I second this. Wake does not care if you have ties to the program or if you have worked with them. < Yes, this is completely true and also happened to me as well. Ties to the program including doing an away rotation means nothing. | Accepted (virtual) x4, Accepted in-person x3 | how did you all apply for this? <Applied on VSAS x2
