PURPOSE: To confirm that the horse demonstrates correct basics, by showing suppleness both laterally and longitudinally, moving freely forward in a clear rhythm with a steady tempo, and readily accepting contact with the bit. Correct geometry and lines of travel should be shown.RIDER #10339Link:

Enter working trot

Halt, salute
Proceed working trot
Regularity and quality of trot; willing, calm transitions; straightness; attentiveness; immobility (min. 3 seconds)66pushes through rider's right leg into halt then falling to the left approaching C. Many walk steps out of halt- at this level it is ok to walk into and out of halt but that is a couple of steps and, if you do, be sure the horse is tracking straight not drifting

Track right

Circle right 20m
Regularity and quality of trot; shape and size of circle; bend; balance66strides are short and tentative and horse's neck is up and braced and back is dropped. He tends to leg yeild rather than truly bend. circle needs to be full 20m- too small second half
12
3KXMChange reinRegularity and quality of trot; straightness; bend and balance in corner6212look right across full diagonal and swings HQ left at K so that he not really straight. strides continue short and neck is braced
13
4Between C & HWorking canter left leadWilling, calm transition; regularity and quality of gaits; bend and balance in corner; straightness6212prompt but hollow and counterbent into canter- needs to be more freely forward with ground cover
14
5ECircle left 20mRegularity and quality of canter; shape and size of circle; bend; balance66circle poorly placed and horse is pushing through his outside shoulder and overbending in the neck rather than showing honest bend through his body. needs more reach over topline and longer strides
15
6Between E & KWorking trotWilling, calm transition; regularity and quality of gaits; straightness; bend and balance in corner66obedient but neck up and braced and back dropped, overbent in neck to the left, body nicely straight

Before A

A
Circle left 20m rising trot, allowing the horse to stretch forward and downward while maintaining contact

Shorten the reins

Working trot
Forward and downward stretch over the back into a light contact, maintaining balance and quality of trot; bend; shape and size of circle; willing, calm transitions66horse needs to stretch forward and down more but this frame is what I would like to see through the whole test- horse is relaxed over the back and softer in the connection- it feels as if the rider has softened the rein where she had been pulling back. tension and bracing when picking the reins back up

FE
Medium walk

Change rein, medium walk
Willing, calm transition; regularity, overtrack, and quality of walk6212tense and bracing, rhythm of the walk is almost lost at times

9EM

M
Change rein, free walk

Medium walk
Regularity and quality of walks; reach, overtrack, and ground cover of free walk allowing complete freedom to stretch the neck forward and downward; straightness; willing, calm transitions6212better quality walk here but needs over track and longer reach and stretch with neck- looks tentative as if horse is waiting to have reins shortened rather than reaching out to find rider's hand
19
10CWorking trotWilling, calm transition; regularity and quality of trot; bend and balance in corner; straightness66much tension and bracing preparing to trot. needs to cover more ground with more swing and ground cover, frame is too tight and constricting
20
11ECircle left 20mRegularity and quality of trot; shape and size of circle; bend; balance66work on circle placement and shape. second half of circle flattens into an oval and horse begins to resist and push into outside rein and through his shoulder which suggests that rider is using only rein aids and not including seat and leg and outside aids
21
12FXHChange reinRegularity and quality of trot; straightness; bend and balance in corner6212could ride more supple turn at F so that horse is straighter going into the diagonal, horse becomes more braced and higher headed approaching H
22
13Between C & MWorking canter right leadWilling, calm transition; regularity and quality of gaits; bend and balance in corner; straightness6212very busy in mouth with mouth open preparing to canter, overbent to inside with neck
23
14BCircle right 20mRegularity and quality of canter; shape and size of circle; bend; balance66well shaped and sized circle and rider uses good outside aids to maintain more correct bend but horse needs to be allowed to come more over his back and lower his neck from the withers
24
15Between B & FWorking trotWilling, calm transition; regularity and quality of gaits, straightness; bend and balance in corner66obedient but braced and overbent in neck to the right

As in Training Level Test 1, there is much that is good but much to improve upon. I loved seeing that he can give you that lovely, relaxed back in the stretc circle and would yencourage you to ride always with that feel as it will help you build the self carriage, throughness, frame, and harmony that I want to see. As he becomes more confident in that frame in the trot, you will be able to relax and soften him in the canter and it, too, will become soft and swinging. I think there are very nice gaits in this horse but the suppleness must be present for them to truly sow. Good luck!
