Deckard grew up in Marquette, Kansas and graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BS in History and Social Studies. He worked as a sports writer for the Pittsburg Morning Sun from 1996-99. He currently serves as sports correspondent and baseball blogger for the Topeka Capital-Journal.
