In 1996-97 Hanover County Public Schools, supported by a grant from the Virginia Department of Education, began a program called Serve & Learn. The program’s purpose was to encourage and acknowledge the importance of volunteer service to the community. To be eligible, a senior or their parent must be a member of a Hanover County PTA/PTSA.
The Hanover County Council of PTAs annually awards a scholarship to three graduating seniors from Hanover County high schools. These students are continuing their education in a variety of ways. Consistent with the spirit and mission of the PTA, which is a community-minded organization, devoted to promoting the welfare of youth and children, this scholarship is awarded not solely based on academic achievement, but rather on a demonstrated commitment to and engagement in community service.
